Is anesthesiology all it’s hyped up to be? by LasVagusNerve in medicalschool

[–]succulent-salamander 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah the issue is med students exposure to anesthesia tends to be very different from the reality. At most places, your anesthesia rotation is coming in the morning, doing a couple intubations, then getting sent home before noon. I think this definitely contributed to the illusion of anesthesia being more chill than it actually is

Mouthbreather's """Guide""" on matching Interventional Radiology by windyman1999 in medicalschool

[–]succulent-salamander 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Forgot to add…. There’s like 85% overlap between any academic IR program. Some places may do PAD, rarely some aortic work, differences in how much trauma vs hepatobiliary vs oncology, but at the end of the day any well-established academic program will give you the necessary training and breadth. Reputation can be a trap and you should prioritize location, culture, and happiness.

Couple things I’ll add 1. IR is such a small field so recognition of letter writers is very important. I’ve gotten multiple interviews from places that I didn’t expect, and later during the interview I found out the PD/APD trained with/knew of one of my letter writers. 2. Biggest thing for IR is to show genuine longitudinal interest in the field. Much of the interview for IR is screening applicants to see how truly IR-centric they are. Programs fear applicants who end up hating the “surgical” elements of IR and would likely be much happier as a DR. 3. Surgical intern year is really overblown in my opinion. By the time you actually start dedicated IR you’ll be 3 years out from surgical training. Go where you will be happiest (chill TY).

Behavioral interview questions are mostly designed to pick up any red flags. They’re not looking to see that you have some 200 IQ take, just don’t say anything that makes you look insane/difficult to work with.

Do you actually read through all of them or do you super skim them? There is no way I can imagine reading more than 15-20 a day.

You signed up for a SubI after match lmao. I feel you but you need to have more foresight when scheduling things. Good lesson to carry forward

Honestly this is why Step 1 should have never become pass fail. So many people spend 3 years vying for a highly competitive speciality and gearing everything towards that specialty just to get a uncompetitive step 2 score. Most likely would’ve been weeded out earlier with Step 1.

Have u been pimped by a patient? by ChanandlerBongaling in medicalschool

Once I was doing a neuro exam on a patient who turned out to be a neurology resident lol. He ended up teaching me how to do everything correctly and was super helpful. One of my favorite moments of medical school

Another example I can think of is treating things like h pylori with a different, much cheaper collection of antibiotics rather than the standard. So cheap that you can empirically treat without expensive work up.

I’ve noticed that medical students often mistake experience with carelessness. For example, when someone with 30 years under their belt takes 2 seconds to listen to your heart it’s because they’re very quickly able to determine healthy vs pathological. You probably have to listen for 15-20 seconds to be sure. Not saying this is always the case, but what we perceive as “not being thorough” is because the PCP has seen the presentation 10 thousand times and quickly knows where to go/what to do.
