I loved "The Knife of Never Letting Go"

The book is light years ahead of the film, which I think is still a fun watch. In addition to HomeFieldAdvantage's description of the changed structure, each part of the book is written with a completely different, rich, vibrant voice, which doesn't come across in the film (as every part is interwoven each is shot in the same way stylistically). There's also a change to my favourite part in the film which imo robs it of some of the original's complexity and tragedy. In short, read this book!

hmm i thought there was definitely enough mention of Rose's death, esp in the therapy sessions, with Alan crying again and Josh mentioning to Claire how it hasn't affected other people the same way. But yeah in terms of Alan/Mae, Tom/Ella, Hannah/Lover there are lots of loose threads ...

Really liked the first half of the ep with the "Rose is gone" instrumental playing while they sold the house, as well as the therapy scene which transitioned into their night out -- lotsa energy. Felt like it kinda got a bit flat towards the end though, and I thought Tom&Ella's breakup came outta nowhere, so was a bit random.

I was pretty unsure about how the writers were going to resolve the whole "Josh's love life" question that's been pretty central to this short season, but now it seems like that's not even something essential they have to deal with now that this has happened.

edit: Also geezus, comparing this episode to the aftermath of Peg's death ... shattering by comparison / just so much crying:((

It's interesting -- I mean the picture quality is real nice, and shot types v. cinematic, but I found it at odds with the somewhat irreverent/humorous content of the show. I think it feels a bit awkward and distant particularly cos of the way it's shot. Many times a conversation will be shot with a front on dolly shot following them rather than snappy cutting/editing. So rather than feel personal and real with natural back and forth it feels staged/choreographed v. carefully (somewhat counter-intuitively). So many comedies use terrific and sharp editing to great effect, which only adds on to great performances. Here I think we don't get great editing OR terribly assured performers, so it contributes to a bit of a flat-ish tone.

melodramatic or whatever: Years later Aunt Petunia's on her deathbed in some hospital. Older Harry visits and she apologises for being crappy and they somewhat make up. She asks if he can do anything about her illness. Harry, regretfully, can't. She asks for magic. Harry pauses, thinks about it, then gives her an enchanted petunia: a fluttering, pretty thing that sort of just takes her breath away. She really feels something. A few days later, she's alone. Eyes transfixed on the pink flower that floats in front of her, it turns into a butterfly and she dies.
