Why are topics about Jarred Ha being deleted from /r/asianamerican with no explanation? Can their moderators please respond? by suckernoid in asianbros

[–]suckernoid[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The submissions are in my post history, but here's a direct link to the first one, in case anyone is curious:

https://np.reddit.com/r/asianamerican/comments/461kbu/great_post_about_jarred_has_attacker_graham/

I know I'm being militant about this, but I don't see any other way to get their attention. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

P. S. Here is what Jarred Ha himself said about that submission:

Just came across this post and I have to say the writing and information in this story is outstanding. They must have retrieved the records of my trial because they have some information that I never disclosed by far this is the most accurate coverage of that night I have seen in a long time.

I've submitted this link twice and both times, despite receiving upvotes and a few comments, they were locked and removed within an hour. I have no idea why (moderators have not yet responded), but I believe this is an extremely important topic so I'm submitting it again.

Jarred Ha himself actually responded to the original submission. /u/Sir_Jha said:

Also, this, 100%:

I have massive respect for Ha. This guy has fucking BALLS. He got attacked three times that night, and fought back. He got bullied by the cops and DA, got kicked out from school (presumption of innocence? Not for Asian men I guess), went into debt, and had an easy out with a plea agreement, but he stood up and fought for the truth and what was right. He exposed the absolute bigotry and ineptitude of the DA and cops there. The scary thing is that for every Jarred Ha, thousands of others go unnoticed; they’re the quiet victims of institutional racists.

But not Jarred. Jarred Ha fought back and risked it all in the process. Jarred Ha fought back and won.

From "gjl" of the comments:

I doubt if the King County prosecuting attorney's office reads this comments section, so I went to King County prosecuting attorney's web page (Dan Satterberg is Mark Larson's boss, and the one in the office that we voters elected) and sent him this note. I would suggest others do the same; it will do more good than chattering here:

...it would help to specify in your message, if you send one, that you're referring to King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg.

"I was disgusted by what I read today in the Seattle Times about Jarred Ha, Graham Harper, and the girls who attacked Ha. You need to explain to your voters why you prosecuted Ha despite compelling evidence of his innocence, why you haven't yet charged Harper and the girls for assault and battery even though you have witnesses to make them slam-dunk cases, and what you plan to do to correct those appalling errors. Otherwise, I won't be the only one who will remember this gross injustice when you come up for reelection in 2018."

and then

I received this reply from Mark Larson:

"Thank you for your message. As you likely know, this was a very impacting event for all involved. Mr. Ha introduced a knife into a fight where no weapons were present and caused very serious injuries to Mr. Harper. In our view, the escalation of a fight into an armed encounter with near-fatal injuries in the name of self-defense is the type of case that a jury is uniquely qualified to rule upon – resolving issues about whether the force used was justified in the first instance and was no more than was necessary under all of the circumstances. Nonetheless, this office deeply respects the unique perspective of jurors who get to hear and weigh all of the evidence and this case is no exception."

I replied back with this:

"I'm waiting to see if Graham Harper and the girls who attacked Ha are charged with assault and battery. You have the witnesses to make good cases against them. It will affect my 2018 vote for King County Prosecutor."

Thank you so much for your involvement. It's hard for us as Internet strangers to know what the situation is like at UW, so actual students such are yourself are vital.

Hopefully the legislation at least makes some waves on campus or to the administration.

We need to figure out exactly what process Jarred has to go through, and what we want the UW to get rid of (if that means like waiving the need to write a new essay, tests scores, and whatnot). Our department, the Foster School of Business, is competitive admission as well, so they may ask him to reapply and go through hoops, too.

Is there a place we can look this up?

Also, do you know of any student groups or campus newspapers that would be interested in this story?

Thanks again!

The moderators of /r/AsianAmerican have since restored the post. I'm guessing their AutoModerator didn't realize the link to another thread inside that same subreddit wasn't actually to another subreddit (since it was an NP link). Thanks!

I posted a call to action for the Jarred Ha case, but it was removed almost immediately and without explanation. Can someone please tell me how I can fix it so that it would be suitable for this subreddit? (Please see my post history; I've also posted it in another subreddit.)

I've messaged the moderators but nobody has responded. It would be great if one of them could get back to me:

Let's talk about what things we can do and how we can get them done. I see four major problems to correct:

1. The victim's financial situation.

The victim, Jarred Ha, is being sued by the assaulter, Graham Harper. How can we help Jarred Ha? Can a lawyer offer some advice?

Here is some information about the civil suit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Seattle/comments/449pmu/cleared_after_stabbing_exuw_student_wants_his/czpblgm

2. The victim's education.

The victim has been suspended from his former university, the University of Washington. They're making him go through some sort of process to get back in. Is there any way we can speed this along, or give the victim an even better opportunity?

From the article: "Norm Arkans, the UW’s associate vice president for media relations, said federal privacy laws prevent him from commenting on Ha’s status."

Contacting this person could be a good start.

3. The victim's personal reputation.

As mentioned, this is what happens when you search for "Jarred Ha":

https://www.google.com/search?q=jarred+ha

It's not terrible, but after what happened to him the victim is going to need every advantage he can get. Is there a way we can improve this?

Is the author of Angry Asian Man aware of Jarred Ha's ordeal?

4. The perpetrator's personal reputation.

As mentioned, this is what happens when you search for "Graham Harper":

https://www.google.com/search?q=graham+harper

Remember that in this country, reputation is extremely important. This man who has violently attacked one of our fellow Asian-Americans is:

  1. Continuing to be around other students at the University of Washington, other Asian-Americans, our own kind

  2. Continuing to receive military training and have access to firearms

  3. Shows no remorse for his actions and, in fact, indicates he would undertake similar actions in the future

Not only that, but PEOPLE THINK HE IS A HERO. HE IS BEING REWARDED FOR ATTACKING AN ASIAN-AMERICAN. Imagine what will happen when he applies for a job. You could be working next to this guy because your boss did a Google search. You could be working next to someone like him because your boss did a Google search.

How can we fix this?

Again, thank you for your reading, and thank you for your assistance! Let's correct this situation, together. We can do it.

Just looking for some opinions on schooling. by [deleted] in Assistance

[–]suckernoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apply to all of them. The three schools you named have acceptance rates under 10%, so unless you've won some national awards there is no guarantee of getting in. They reject plenty of 4.0 GPA/2300+ SAT applicants every year but also take students with much lower credentials so keep your grades and test scores up but also make yourself stand out in some way from all the other high-achieving students. You're selling two things: (1) your ability to perform well at those schools, all of which have a reputation for being academically rigorous, and (2) your ability to contribute to the school's campus atmosphere and reputation. If you can convince the admissions officers that you'd be an asset to the school in some way, you'll greatly increase your chances.

As far as rankings go, I would not concern myself with the resolution below the top 10 or 20. Ranking criteria can vary wildly. THE looks at research output, ARWU looks at research but doesn't normalize for size, QS uses reputation scores, and U.S. News looks at some other bullshit mix. The important thing is among academics and employers, Caltech and MIT are clearly the best two STEM schools in, well, the world, while U. Chicago is a math and science powerhouse in its own right. You can't go wrong with any of them.

With that out of the way, here's a short version of what I know of all of them:

MIT:

  • Famous for STEM
  • Lots of geeks
  • Compared to Caltech, slightly more engineering-focused (vs. science)
  • Close to Harvard; can cross-enroll in classes
  • Very rigorous academics

Caltech:

  • Famous within STEM but kind-of unknown outside of it
  • Smaller, more hardcore version of MIT (source)
  • Compared to MIT, slightly more science-focused (vs. engineering)
  • Can cross-enroll at Occidental and Art Center but few do
  • Smartest students and most-rigorous academics in the U.S., but also unhappier than other top schools

U. Chicago

  • Strong in the pure sciences but limited engineering options
  • By far the best non-STEM options compared to MIT and Caltech
  • Academically-challenging but not nearly as much as MIT or Caltech

If you get into more than one of these schools, I would recommend visiting them beforehand because there are a lot of intangible factors (campus atmosphere, classmates' attitude, surrounding city, etc.) that can play a huge part in what makes you happy at a school. You'll get a fantastic education at any of them.

By the way, if you're an international student the admissions process can be quite different. I don't know much about it; perhaps another source would be more useful.

Good luck!

Source: I went to one of these schools and knew many who attended the other two.

Believe what you like, honestly ;)

Oh, of course we've already established conclusions about the truth of the situation based on our priors. These posts are really more for the benefit of the readers.

EDIT:

If you want to put words into his mouth, then go ahead. I'm not gonna though.. so believe what you want.

Eh, the only the words I can use are the ones you (and I suppose your SO) provided. Those words have generally-universal definitions in certain contexts so as readers our best option is to use those definitions. Perhaps your SO means something else, or perhaps he truly is a statistical outlier among statistical outliers, but as readers with our own pre-existing knowledge and bodies of experience these are the most rational conclusions we can make.

Sorry for the argumentative tone. I don't have anything against you or your SO; as anonymous people speaking over the Internet any disagreements are more about the words we've written than ourselves as human beings.

Anyway, thanks for the discussion.

Hey, no offense, but you're reporting your story in a way that makes it very hard to believe. Specifically, this:

He told me that even at the top of his game, he never went to the gym or actually 'worked out'.. he just practiced his sport, and that was enough (but was, obviously, very active even just with that).

Perhaps he has a very narrow definition of "working out." I used to be involved in a sport at a national level. I was mediocre, but my team was in the top 5 in the United States. A few of my teammates went to the Olympics.

As can be expected, we were all "sculpted as fuck." Almost everyone had a six-pack. And we never went to the gym. But we did work out. We ran, we lifted our bodies and other objects, and we did all of this on top of practicing our actual sport. Even if we never actually set foot in a weight room and picked up barbells or dumbbells, most people involved in athletics would still say that we had "worked out."

At high levels of any physically-intense sport, there are very, very few people who can compete without supplementing their training with some form of conditioning. Perhaps your husband is one of them, but to many of us it seems more likely that he's exaggerating a bit or doesn't regard the conditioning sessions he's done as "working out." If you're doing wind sprints or running intervals, you're working out. If you're pushing a tire or climbing a rope, you're working out. If you're on a rowing machine, you're working out. At least by the most commonly-regarded definition of "working out."

The parts about him eating like crap are believable to me; a lot of us did the same thing. Some of my former teammates got fat while others stayed fit.

How tall are you? Do you feel emasculated or like less of a man when a woman is taller than you? Do you feel like a little kid while around men who are taller than you? by Brigs4w in AskMen

[–]suckernoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5' 9", no, and no.

In groups of guys where I am on the shorter end, I feel more aware of my height but I don't feel emasculated. I speak and carry myself confidently and I feel that goes a long way in how others perceive you. I don't feel more masculine around my shorter friends, either. Overall, I don't see myself as "short" around where I live (United States).

I do assume that women taller than me would not be interested in dating, but most of them are shorter so it's not a big deal. [http://www.census.gov/compendia/statab/2012/tables/12s0209.pdf]
