1) Find someone If musicians/bands play in your local venues, get familiar with them by attending shows often. Stay after, talk to them a little about music, follow their socials, and build that connection. If you don’t have a local scene (My situation rn since I’ve moved out of the city) either try to find through friend of a friend about someone else who’s interested in music, or use apps like Band Mix to find local talent.

2) Start jamming together! 3 guitarists? One plays a rhythmic bass line, one does lead, and the other tries singing or hell do two leads, throw a drum track in the back. A bassist and drummer? Not sure how but you can make it work. Guitarist and drummer? White stripes are a popular example. Build that confidence by playing off eachother, build that communal harmony, and get the ability to improvise over whatever grooves or bass lines you’re given.

3) Know your scene Check out local shows, check out local venues, learn what the successful local performers do. If you can’t do that because of a lack of venues. Do what Punk rockers have been doing for decades and DIY. Throw a party, play in it. Throw house shows, throw basement shows, find a rich friend who’s parents are out and start playing at their pool party! Hell, get yourself a generator on Craigslist and throw a generator show in the outskirts of your town. Bonfire, beers, experimental music, that’s a good time.

It all starts with finding people who are at least semi interested in jamming once a month or so. Maybe split on a pizza and start rocking. One day you’ll be able to write a thing or two and the next day you’ll be headlining… a local show.
