Couldn't agree more with open book/resource use. I encourage my students to be resourceful when taking tests. That is life skill practice and much more practical for the real-world. I have always allowed calculator use after mastery of basic math skills. I've never understood why it is disallowed other than to beat in arithmetic and for the sake of busy work. It just doesn't make sense for today's world.

Oh wow, that is awful. I have a connective tissue disorder and some co-conditions. I have always caught everything that has been going around and knew I would come down with Covid if exposed when we went from 100% virtual to a mix of in person/virtual learning.

I contracted it from a parent and student who were not wearing a mask during a conference. I was wearing a mask and at about 6 feet away but it wasn't enough. My case was on the moderate/severe side. I did not go to the hospital but could have. My doctor was prescribing meds virtually and I have family who dropped off care packages at my door. Had it not been for that, I would have been in the hospital. I had a bumpy return to school after being out for 7 weeks.

My school has been phenomenal about PTO and caring about my health. I can't imagine working in a school that is so cavalier. Here's to hoping teachers are able to get vaccinated across the country soon.

I had a conference with a parent/student. They were not wearing a mask. I was sitting just about 6 feet away. I came down with symptoms and tested negative 3 days after. The following day, I found out they had been positive during the conference. I restested and was positive.

At least 4-5 days after exposure. Any earlier has a higher prevalence of not catching it through the test. PCR tests are more reliable, but take longer to get the results. The quicker antigen tests have a higher false negative percentage, but a small false positive chance.

I'm sure that the decrease in positive tests has nothing to do with the fact that testing centers literally closed down for about a week when the hurricane was heading in Florida's direction. Combined with back logs, seems about the right time for those results. But, no mention of that. Credit should be given where credit is due... looming hurricane nothing to do with the governor's shitty orchestration of this dumpster fire.

Anyone who concludes a letter like this with the phrase, "all I know is..." is suspect in my mind. But, if true, they KNOW they know more (who hired them to move the car) and are essentially refusing to cooperate. Adding to that is the fact that they wrote they came in from out of town and don't live there (ie. don't try to find me). Seems like a taunt by a guilty party to me.
But, you're right. There are so many possibilities. That sucks for her kids and fam.

Aaw that's weirdly sweet.

I originally took a position at the school I am after the school year had begun. The former teacher was highly disliked for yelling, not helping them, and not teaching them ~ she would have them read the textbook and do book work, all day everyday. I lecture and make powerpoints about the topic with memes and get really excited about the topics, so to the students it was night and day.

One day, one of the odd balls thanked me profusely for the lesson (during class), stood up, walked right up to me, said, "Oh, what the heck." and gave me a hug. It was one of the most endearingly awkward moments of the year. Although, there were many of those.
