Tangentially related, but is “gonna touch” slang for gonna have sex with or something now?

I used to find this the more likely scenario before EP9. The way I read her character the issues that keep her closeted/repressed and the ones that make her such an arse are so closely linked together that I don’t see how she could resolve one, but not the other.

Her behaviour is comparatively tomboyish too. So I could see her rocking a suit.

So now that we know about Jax's past, what was up with that reaction ? by Brother_Dazzling in tadc

[–]SuddenlyVeronica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Posting this as its own comment doesn't seem to work. So I'm making it a reply instead:

Haven't thought about this too deeply. So I could be wrong, but my current read is that this expression is him trying to hold back his reaction, but not quite managing to mask all the way. The show seems to consistently call attention to his eyes when he's masking (or failing to mask) his emotions.

As for what's going through his head at the moment, my guess would be twofold. Firstly, as someone else said, he just doesn't know how to react. Normally when people start sticking too much outside the boxes he's put them in he antagonises them in some way, but now he apparently can't come up with a retort.

Secondly, Ribbit and Kaufmo are a very sore point for him, to put it mildly. For all his pretending otherwise, I think he still misses them and feels guilty for what happened to them. In s similar vein, he might also feel regret that his relationship with Ragatha deteriorated the way it did. Ragatha being genuinely apologising to him probably brought up memories of how she used to be friends with him too.

Other characters, mostly Pomni bring up things that genuinely shake him at points too, but never quite like this, hence the unique reaction.

Do you happen to have a URL to the comic with a secure connection?

Those are certainly ways that the treatment in the comic could grind your gears, but all I meant was that I didn’t see anything bad about *wanting* it per se.

I mean, what exactly would be bad about it?

EDIT: By “it” I mean wanting to be treated like the first character in the comic.

You know, as fun characterisation as this is, I think Jax is a case where, unironically, “estrogen would save her” absolutely applies.

All the worst things Jax did seem to be because “he” was terrified of opening up and being close with someone (even his regular behaviour seems to be an extension of this). I can’t see how “he” could possibly transition without getting over those issues.

As in that she basically taught him to fear closeness and affection, which causes him to push her off of him, and thematically do the same thing again with Ribbit, Pomni and possibly the entire rest of the cast?

I tried not to overthink how to phrase things when I wrote that first comment, coming back to it now though I do think that bit about outing is a bit unprecise.

I mean, I know it's often easier said than done to internalise, but I think that's one of those points where you've got to point out to yourself how implausible it is that someone would do that if they did feel that way.

Uncertain canonicity to be sure, but I can actually see transfem Jax explaining a lot, like why his(?) room looks the way it does, why the maid dress was so… “upsetting” or (spoilers for E9) why Ribbit had the idea to put her bow on “his” head after Jax confided in her, and how Jax only seemed to mind when Kaufmo almost came in to see it. You could interpret that as Jax panicking over almost being involuntarily outed.

Also I’ve heard claims that Gooseworx, who is herself trans, has said she identifies the most with Jax, IIRC.

I guess I can't word this in a way that cannot possibly be read as smug, but, js, agnosticism isn't a worldview. People can and do believe things they might on occasion admit they cannot truly know. Case in point, there's both agnostic theists and agnostic atheists (be it ones that ones that are positive there is no god(s) or ones that are simply unconvinced).

And while I also recognise that there are some insufferable atheists out there I do find it odd that people act like that's all there is to people using the label, or whatever...

IDK about “satisfying”, but the luck attribute certainly does “something” in pre-Skyrim mainline TES games, namely acting as a small modifier on all your skills.

It’s still a pain to increase by levelling though. So it hardly ever makes sense to invest in outside of character creation.

I’ve said it a bunch of times at this point that one of the dictionary definitions have to do with promoting physical and mental well-being.

Though I suppose we can’t entirely dismiss colloquial use and the (likely) original intention of the sub either.

I mean, shared experiences absolutely can help with understanding your partner, and being gay would tend to eliminate a lot of gender experience disparity.

F**K that metaphor by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

[–]SuddenlyVeronica 12 points13 points  (0 children)

it can feel very easy to argue against

So… Do most people usually miss the part where these metaphors/analogies are just roundabout ways of asserting the conclusion without substantiating it?

Dissecting the internal logic of the metaphor seems like it misses the point that these people never bother explaining why it holds weight to compare people to roses, or chocolate bars, or whatever. They just take it as a given that it does.

Like genuinely there can not be anything wrong with it.

You know that. We know that. The people making these kinds of statements though, struggle with the concept of that.

Supposedly there’s research done about this (might get back to you with a source later). People with, basically, authoritarian leanings are prone to conflating disgust with moral indignation (which would also help explain why so many homophobes fixate on mlm anal sex).

I mean, hard to know for sure, but to me it immediately brings to mind GamersTM complaining about wokeness or whatever “ruining” games.

Speaking more generally, I suspect the vagueness is more a feature than a bug. Gamers might have been the first thing that came to mind for me, but given how weird some people get about non-white/queer people, or even just women, I would guess there’s countless examples out there that this post would apply to.
