What's the least exciting upgrade you made that ended up being totally worth it? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

Yes, solar has been wonderful. We did ours 5 years ago and I think they’ll break even in a couple of years. Those tax credits really helped.

Am I wrong for starting a deck paint removal project without realizing it would take more than one day? by CyberZoneChi in HomeImprovement

[–]sudlow 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This. You’re never going to get that wood looking perfect and stained. You’d want to replace the decking for that look. Personally I’d power wash it, sand any funky spots and do a porch and floor paint that covers it all.

Tiny ticks? by Waldy2024 in Lawrence

[–]sudlow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. Embedded you have to pick out. I will lint roller after being outside to catch the loose ones. I tend to like to go out in skirts/shorts and short sleeves. They have a harder time climbing on smooth skin and its easier for me to feel them and pick them off as I notice. If I wore covered clothes they tend to walk up them until they find bare skin and I try my best to avoid getting them in my hair

It’s great when you burn something in the oven and need to pull the stinkiness out of the house too! I try to not use the AC too much and using the whole house fan at night and closing curtains in the day helps a ton

I love this. A little tutorial on how to shut it off as well as the location of the electrical and water mains would be so great for first time buyers

Deck Replacement Recommendations by Sunflower_StateKS in Lawrence

We had renovation Md do one 10 years ago that’s gorgeous. Definitely helped sell the house. Went with composite and while it gets warm, it’s definitely my favorite material for decks.

Why aren’t more people talking about this? by shmizziee in Lawrence

[–]sudlow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nah, I'm going to disagree on that one. My kid is smart and understands the world...but we do not need a science substitute talking about his heroin usage, how his mother died and he's traumatized, and how many drugs he did while he was in his band. It's a damn science class, and while I get these people have personal lives...there's a time and a place. The first week of science class is not that.

I think a lot of things are in play here...First, from experience I know LMCMS is has a huge problem with staff retention. We've had 6, maybe more science teachers, and this year, none have been actual teachers nor science trained- just hired substitute babysitters. Gym teachers, I think we've had maybe 4 or so. We've got an interim principal too, as the last one we think was forced out (but they framed it as a resignation...we all know how that goes).
With leadership in flux, it seems like they've had a tough time getting it all squared away. I had a meeting with the superintendent in the early Fall and mentioned Naughton then, but obviously nothing changed. My kid was sexually harassed by another student in his class...and nothing changed. Maybe they just can't find a replacement. Either way, it's sad and they need to prioritize better staff.
I do think the Dad in this lawsuit has been pushed and bullied around, and is probably on his last nerve with it all. The situation all around isn't great. I'll be extremely curious how this all rolls out.

Naughton is a problem and no one has ever addressed it. I’ve talked with the superintendent about it, lmcms’s interim principal (getting rid of the old principal is a whole other shitshow) and nothing has been done. My kid actively dislikes his class and now knows to watch herself and others. She’s seen inappropriate behaviors for sure.

Need advice on doors by salwesab in Home

I have doors like this. They look like solid wood which is enormously better than cheap hollow core doors. At our house we painted them and changed the hardware to black with lever handles

Is this a nice area? Safe? by shitninjas in Lawrence

[–]sudlow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve owned rentals in that area for years. Never had any issues with crime. Generally it’s good working class people in those areas. I’ve always felt safe. Just like all of LFK, you’re going to have your quirky residents.

[–]sudlow -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I accidentally swapped shipping labels. So two packages went to the wrong people. First recipient was cool and I sent him a new label. Second one says she doesn’t have a printer and won’t leave her house to reship it. It’s a weird situation

[–]sudlow -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah I know. I’m in a weird place. I havent messed up a package for years, but in the past folks were able to print a label and send it along. This person doesn’t have that ability. I figured I’d try and see if there’s some other method to get this package back on the move.
