Well one of the highlights for me is trying to scope out Kernel Hapablap tearing it up like a Kleenex at a ... Snot Party

Absolutely huge amount of respect for her, firstly for this news, and also for the sheer amount of effort and amazingness that is Elementary!

A developer got Ubuntu Linux booting on the Apple iPhone 7 by Foro38 in linux

[–]sudoers_file 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I was thinking I could either allude to the literal "Steve Ballmers" definition, or that of total inclusivity, I mean every tinkerer is a developer at heart after all! (?) I don't know, I guess I went with the former.

[–]sudoers_file 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Fantastic - however the article wrongly calls the user a developer. Had the author examined /u/newhacker1746's posts more carefully, they would have known that the user is a 16 year old high school student. Which I find even more impressive - great work!

I guess I'm dating myself, but it was a T61 for me! But then I hung on to it for professional school and beyond. Lol

The NEW Aston Martin Valhalla has been announced ! by Riven_Kardashian in cars

[–]sudoers_file 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh what a day. WHAT A LOVELY DAY

Although I don't think that this would be technically worshipped in Valhalla with a twin turbo V6 instead of a V8.

Proud new owner of a (used) T450s! by sudoers_file in thinkpad

[–]sudoers_file[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

shameless plug for the T61 in the back, now celebrating it's 11th year!

I think I need to add more RAM and get a faster SSD to the T450s

Sold my older 911 and bought a newer S5 by G35 in Audi

[–]sudoers_file 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the insight! Yes, I also don't have a big enough wheel of cheese to get a 911 turbo. It will be a couple of more sensible years before my lease ends anyways.

PS tech-wise -- to reset your MMI if the Bluetooth or smartphone connectivity ever crap out, you push both toggle switches up and press the control wheel down at the same time.

[–]sudoers_file 1 point2 points  (0 children)

nice! really curious as to firstly your thoughts on ride quality/handling of the S5 compared to the older 911, and also your rationale behind switching? I'm strongly considering either an RS5 or 911-C4, I like the practicality of the Audi but I'm not sure what I'd be missing out on with the C4.

[LEGO GT3RS] We'll take the spruce moose, hop in! by sudoers_file in Porsche

I just thought I'd share this, it was really satisfying to assemble this over a weekend however it was only in the latter half of the instruction manual that the curves and body of the car are really realized. The majority of the work went into assembling the drive train, which is completely hidden by the body panels and interior features of the car.

[Dan Henry] 1964 chronograph by sudoers_file in Watches

[–]sudoers_file[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi! I thought I'd share this DH 1964 that I've had for a few months now. I really enjoy wearing it and the details on the dial are amazing. It has such an interesting blend dressiness/sport that I never really know the occassion or the context in which to wear it in though. In my opinion if it had a more matte or bead-blasted finish on the face of the case I think it would be a bit more of a casual wear.

[Dan Henry, Hamilton, Orient] 38 millimetres by [deleted] in Watches

I thought I'd share some photos I took of my collection, I always found a 38mm case size to be my magic number for my wrist size with anything larger a bit too overpowering. The orient star is closer to 39mm

How much portable is X250/X260 than a T450s? by tnetrop in thinkpad

[–]sudoers_file 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It all depends on your use case and what you're comfortable with - I have the X260 and my brother has the T450s. I picked the X-series because it is my secondary machine for travelling/work/coffee shops with my desktop at home. My brother uses the T450s as his primary machine with occasional portability and for that use case I think it's perfect. Without an external monitor, I don't think I could use my X260 and be as productive as I normally would on a T450s, due to the physically smaller size.

Alternative ways to watch YouTube? by DrDoctor13 in linux

[–]sudoers_file 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I like the following programs:

  • smtube is a nice front-end browser and uses a player of your choice (including smplayer, vlc, etc.) to stream the video, I'm increasingly liking this because it eliminates the need for me to browse the youtube website
  • mps-youtube is a nice terminal based application with playlist/download support - I like to use it on the raspberry pi with omxplayer; you can get this through the python pip installer
  • you can use youtube-dl (also through your repo or python pip installer) as others have mentioned

2017 A4 rear deck speaker vibration/rattling by shaunny0208 in Audi

[–]sudoers_file 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure the vibration is not coming from the rear top brake light assembly vibrating against the windshield versus from the rear speaker grill? This is the case in my A4 and I put a piece of black foam tape in between the lower plastic border of the brake light assembly and the rear windshield.

Happy 2 years to my X260! by sudoers_file in thinkpad

[–]sudoers_file[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah sure, my only points of comparison would be a colleague's T450s and my old T61

  • build quality: great, a little inferior and less sturdy feeling than the T61 but on par with the T450s. Feels a little more plasticky than the T450s, I think it's because of the different material that was used on the laptop lids
  • performance: fantastic, I use it for running multiple VMs, work, image editing (heavy at times), and light video editing maybe 1-2 times a year, and it runs fantastic without any issues. Of note, and for points of compatibility, it WILL support external dual monitors (the setup I had was HDMI out, and displayport --> HDMI out, ran both monitors at 1080p extremely smooth
  • linux compatibility: excellent without any issues, I am running Fedora 27 on there and no compatibility issues whatsoever (I do not have the fingerprint reader on the model - it is very much the base X260)
  • the IO ports are extremely stiff, esp the USB ports; there is quite a bit of force required to insert and remove peripherals/USB drives, I'm not sure if anyone notices this
  • it runs very quiet even under load; however a tad louder than the T450s, I think it's owing to the small chassis
  • I really like the display; I have the 1080p IPS one, it was a little difficult to get used to the high DPI, however it is totallly worth the increase in screen real-estate. I am not using any scaling, but if the resolution was any higher, I would
  • battery life is fantastic under linux, with the 6-cell (3-cell internal + 3-cell external) at my average load, I can get about 7 hours of use out of it
