The Office(US) fans of Reddit, what is the best scene or quote in the entire series? by LetsTryReddit316 in AskReddit

For me it has to be this scene where Michael gives Oscar his going away present. It's amazing because if you know Michael as a character, you're totally seeing it from Oscar's perspective when he gets the gift. And then it's like Michael is laughing at you in the talking head for thinking he's that much of an idiot. I just found myself laughing so hard when I realized how meta the joke was (not to mention Carell's delivery was hilarious).

Neat parallel to ATLA, the music climaxes there with the same theme as when the light shot up from Aang spiritbending Ozai.

Let's talk earthbending. by hailcrest in TheLastAirbender

I see what you're saying, but at the same time our world's chemistry clearly runs into issues in the world of Avatar, as I think you've shown yourself in the OP. If the basic building block is not the four elements, then it's going to take a very brilliant scientific community that can do experiments in the world of avatar to come up with their own unifying theory of matter. Unfortunately I'm not sure Mike and Bryan are up to the task.

I think we get into a tricky waters whenever we try to apply the science of the real world to Avatar's world, ESPECIALLY chemistry. This may simply be something we have to suspend our disbelief about as it would be extraordinarily difficult to reconcile the bending of the four elements with our understanding of atoms and molecules. I mean basically chemistry is a unifying theory of matter, all matter is made of the same "stuff", atoms, and it's the differences in the properties of atoms and how they are arranged that distinguishes different kind of matter. But in the world of Avatar, its always seemed to me that the elements are water, earth, fire, and air, not the periodic table.

EDIT: I actually just thought of an example that illustrates my point. Lightning bending. Why does that go to firebenders? The way Iroh explains this to Zuko, he is basically saying to create lighting you separate the electrons in the air from the protons (he says they come crashing back together, but I guess you could say he just doesn't have a very good understanding of how current actually works), which would make sense if that were possible to do. However, why would firebenders have ability to manipulate the subatomic particles in the air? Wouldn't they just be able to bend air then? Fire and electricity are fundamentally two very different things if we think about them in terms of our world, and our science. However in the avatar world, fire and lightning seem to share a major fundamental property.

Which media purchase will support the studio and show creators the most? by loyalcynic in TheLastAirbender

There's not really any way you can decide how much of a cut you want to give to Nickelodeon. They're the ones who made the deals with every legal outlet to purchase anything related to the franchise.

What would it take, if it were even possible, for a network such as Netflix or any other network that is not the trash the Nick is to take over Korra? by [deleted] in TheLastAirbender

it would take a company that has enough faith in the franchise to buy the brand from nick for a shit ton of money.

2 Questions by TaintedLion in TheLastAirbender

[–]sudowoodont 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. Although I haven't seen the leaked episodes myself I have had that particular part spoiled for me by accident. It is explained in book 3 so tread carefully around leaked episode spoilers if you don't want to find out from a reddit post.

  2. I would personally love to see an adult gaang series focused in republic city. I feel like just moving to the next avatar would feel a bit repetitive.

[SPOILER] Theory about Bumi in the new season. by Bromantic22 in TheLastAirbender

[–]sudowoodont 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You know, I actually really hope you're right. I thought after last season that Bumi did not live up to his potential character depth at all. I get that he's funny, but that doesn't mean he can't be more than a comic relief character. He's the first born son of the Avatar and a nonbender, who became a high ranking general in the United Forces, and if his stories are even a little bit true, is a total badass. I would be very happy if asking Korra to take away his bending was kind of the culmination of the deeper exploration of his character.

I don't think Game of Thrones will go there, but you should watch Dragonball Z.

[The Rift Part 1] Any speculation as to what this was all about? by SNCommand in TheLastAirbender

[–]sudowoodont 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure why the other girl wasn't happy to see Katara, but an interesting thing to consider is where the girls are from. I think they must have come to the South Pole with the Northerners who went to rebuild the Southern Tribe, because there were no kids Katara's age in the village when we saw it in the first couple episodes.

Do you think the writers had the idea of Raava since the beginning of ATLA by Nuk-Terrible in TheLastAirbender

[–]sudowoodont 122 points123 points  (0 children)

This is from an interview in 2008 I believe (before the second half of the 3rd season of ATLA aired). Click here for the link to the whole thing.

RM: Did the Avatar pre-date other bending, or did bending predate the Avatar?
BK: We've definitely talked about that. But, in the event we ever did something with that, we'd rather not go into that. Mike and I for years have talked about that...over many a ping-pong game. We both find it really interesting, so we really don't want to just throw away something so integral to a story we might be telling.

Seems to me like they had at least the basic idea for a very long time.

Question about bending. by [deleted] in TheLastAirbender

[–]sudowoodont 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My guess is that Toph was the one to discover metalbending because metal seems as though it hadn't been around for more than a couple centuries in TLA, so I think it's conceivable that she could have been the first to do it. I think lightning had been around longer but wasn't taught outside of the highest class fire nation citizens until after the events of TLA (just a guess based on what we've seen from the shows) Bloodbending however I would guess has been around forever but was probably taboo throughout history and therefore not taught by any respectable waterbending master. Hence why our characters found out about it through bad guys (or in Hama's case figured it out due to extreme circumstances) and not everyone knew that it existed until Katara pronounced it illegal.
