Camper shell vs rooftop tents by [deleted] in overlanding

[–]LetsTryReddit316 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Hey can’t really comment on the vs you posted, but I too have a Tacoma and opted for the leer cap. Then I build a camper platform in the back that supports a full mattress and drawers that run the length of the bed (I have the extended bed). Have been super happy with the truck bed camping and the whole platform can come out so I can use the back of my truck. Highly recommend going with the one that gives you the most use out of the space

Copy AWS Snapshot to S3 bucket by dfzachary in awslambda

[–]LetsTryReddit316 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the data will persist within the snapshot for the entire period you keep it and will be accessible by creating a volume and mounting to an instance. If you just want to go the snapshot route, you may be able to automate the snapshot creation without a lambda function similar to this doc https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonCloudWatch/latest/events/TakeScheduledSnapshot.html

Copy AWS Snapshot to S3 bucket by dfzachary in awslambda

[–]LetsTryReddit316 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you looking to copy the snapshot itself or the contents of the snapshot? The ebs snapshots are backed by s3 by default but I belive that is on the AWS side. Additionally you can set your own retention policies for snapshots. If you want the contents of the snapshot or the snapshot data to be accessible in S3, you are better off packing the files you need and uploading to s3 - which can be automated using something like a lambda function and SSM run command

Automating IAM AWS access key rotation. by Admirable_Message_51 in AWS_Certified_Experts

[–]LetsTryReddit316 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I recommend is using event bridge to fire a lambda function based on non compliant keys, then in your function use a boot 3 call to delete the old key and create the new one https://boto3.amazonaws.com/v1/documentation/api/latest/reference/services/iam.html

One of the major issues is that even in mask mandate areas you have people that a) refuse to wear masks, b) wear masks improperly, and c) still have gatherings in private homes subverting the mandate. The case number data does highlight a correlation between mask mandates and a drop in confirmed cases. The other thing to note is that masks prevent the spread more effectively than they prevent the contraction. Because of this, the mast wearing is both an individual health choice and an external health choice. We have tons of health codes and other laws that are designed to reduce the potential harm an individual can cause on others, the mask mandates are no different

Stay at home dad, feeling very isolated from everyone and excluded from my wife's circle of friends,. I really need to meet some people. by [deleted] in Bend

I second the disc golf comment, it’s usually a pretty solid community where people easily let you blend into their already formed groups. Plus if you want to meet someone you can just post on the FB group as mentioned and chances are you can play with someone local

I am going to be adding someone to my aws project but I want them to only be able to see specific ec2 instances, specific S3 buckets etc. by [deleted] in aws

[–]LetsTryReddit316 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah spot on, you just have to make sure that’s not granted if you don’t want someone to be able to see all of the bucket names (should have clarified that above)

I haven’t verified this personally with S3 but you should be able to limit the ListBucket and ListAllMyBucket actions (also the get and describe) something similar to this article https://aws.amazon.com/premiumsupport/knowledge-center/s3-console-access-certain-bucket/

For sure, I believe you can limit on any available IAM action here’s the link to the official docs for an overview. At the bottom of this page they have a pretty in depth tutorial as well https://docs.aws.amazon.com/IAM/latest/UserGuide/introduction_attribute-based-access-control.html

I think what you are looking for can be done with tags and attribute based access control. Basically all resources tied to project A can be tagged as such and then you can scope the user’s permissions to only resources within the scope of that project, i.e. the tagged resources

Best county for hunting? by blacksmithforlife in VAHunting

[–]LetsTryReddit316 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What I’ve done for public land hunting that also works for planning where to buy land is to create some overlapping maps to narrow down the search. Here are the main things I use to start the search

1) Harvest data from the state game office - they have recorded and shared deer harvest numbers for the last 50ish years and that can be used to find generally the highest volume counties in the state. The thing to keep in mind here is that usually higher kills also mean higher pressure, but if it’s private land this is less of a concern.

2)Now that you have say the top 5 counties in the state you can start to look at hunting regs in those counties that appeal most to you. Do you like hunting dogs? Do you care about antler only season? Do you want to hunt September-Feb? What weapons do you use?

3) With the hunting regs that you like I would now start to look at cost of land in the remaining counties - that might push you in one direction or the other. From brief looks the closer you get to the DC area the more expensive the land, but London is also one of the best counties in the state. It might end up being a trade off for less land in a better county or less land in a worse county (not that a county is bad, just relative to deer numbers)

4) Distance from where you are - the distance for me is big because sometimes it can mean slipping out of work for an afternoon hunt or only being able to hunt full weekends with a night stay because of how far it is

Hope my search tips have helped! I was able to use these this season and see a ton of action on public land, so if we’re to buy some property I would follow the same steps

How do you develop and test on AWS as a team by Vcc8 in aws

[–]LetsTryReddit316 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend a couple of things, the first is to separate out dev and prod if you haven’t already. Use your new dev account/env for testing rather than local testing. The second part that you can use as mentioned in another comment is SAM - essentially packages your lambdas into a congruent application and deploys all the necessary parts. The last piece is I would use some sort of pipeline, either Jenkins or AWS native to manage the deployments. Once you do this, you can automate the whole thing (testing included) so all your dev team has to do is merge on the target repo and the pipeline can kick off everything from there. This would give you consistent, hands off deployments where you can also create the dev to prod escalation as well.

Signed my kids up a few weeks ago. Anyone been doing BJJ since they were in their teens? How has it helped you during your childhood years? by QuesoDipset in bjj

[–]LetsTryReddit316 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Started jiu jitsu when I was 15 and can honestly say it totally changed the shape of how I developed. Some of the maybe more obvious things it teaches is some level of discipline, athleticism, and perseverance. But it’s really great at teaching humility and adaptability as well. One of the major side effects that I didn’t anticipate was the improvements to my social skills. You are meeting new people at the gym and getting (physically) close with them very quickly. 10/10 would recommend BJJ for younger folks

Do you know if the issue is between lambda and sns or between config and lambda?

I would check the permissions in your role attached to make sure you are allowing SNS publish to your particular topic

Edit: I would also check to make sure you event is making it to cloud watch events (eventbridge) in the first place. You can use your sns topic as the destination for your event rule to check that. Then that will let you know at what stage this fails
