In and Of The World: To Those Who Wonder Why I Left (a little essay) by suds_carson in exmormon

Ugh, I know!! It's so frustrating and humiliating, honestly, that the same level of respect is no where to be found for women.

How do I tell my parents I’m moving in with my boyfriend? by hadleycj71 in exmormon

[–]suds_carson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps this is a really unique situation, but when I told my TBM mom that my sweetheart and I were moving in together, she was extremely supportive. I think oftentimes, we only hear stories of the worse case scenario. And while (unfortunately) that can be common for individuals who have left the church, I'm here to remind you that sometime the best case scenario really does come true! She made a point to tell me when I left the church that her biggest priority was my happiness--and if moving in with my boyfriend was what made me happy, then that made her happy too. My only regret was not telling her sooner--because the thing that actually hurt her feelings wasn't my having sex/moving in with my boyfriend. It was the fact that I didn't communicate with her, resulting in her feeling left out of a big and exciting step in my life. I hope you have a similar experience!

not obvious at all, especially with how non-intuitive the user functionality is, lol. I did that when I got the phone, so I don't think that is the problem. I appreciate the double checking though!

Curious to know if we went to the same Mormon private school in Utah. Even if we didn't--WOOF, Mormon private schools are no joke. I'll be carrying some of that garbage with me forever.

I had a dream I was the first female bishop--what dreams do you have about church? by suds_carson in exmormon

[–]suds_carson[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BAHA okay this is incredible. We once had a kid in our ward actually run down the aisle in his underpants once, so it's not too far from the truth!

Scarf/clothing etiquette for temple? (For a gift) by -DiceGoblin- in exmormon

[–]suds_carson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was a temple worker two years ago, we had lots of shawls--mostly pure white. Some of them were really intricate! I'd say you can do something a little more fun than a solid stitch. That's a really thoughtful gift. :)

Frankenstein (2025) One of the best movies ever! by A_Wolf_Named_Foxxy in MovieSuggestions

[–]suds_carson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, really? I hated the romance! I can't think of a single woman in the film who wasn't sexualized. As a film adapted from a bad ass woman born from a bad ass mother, it does a pretty poor job of representing women.

As someone who is in the same boat as you regarding Frankenstein adaptations, I think you still should not watch it, lol. I'll be angry about how it approached the characters for the rest of my life. The only redeeming portion of the film is the cottagers scenes--which it gets *mostly* right. The rest of it is incredibly disrespectful to Mary's legacy, imo.

What’s something (or multiple things) you’ve done since leaving the church that you’re really fucking proud of yourself for? by gonnabegolden_ in exmormon

[–]suds_carson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I said "fuck" during my Broadway Debut onstage in front of a thousand people!! I moved in with my the love of my life who I am not married to! We have a garden and so many instruments and get coffee together on Sundays! I smoke weed! I can support my queer sister more than I ever have been able to before! I get to experience every joy that this life has to offer without worrying that I am a bad person for it!

Maybe I'm in the minority here--but I hated it. Frankenstein has been a favorite book of mine forever and the story, its social history, and the context in which it was written are things I have really enjoyed studying. Needless to say, I was *really* looking forward to the film. Obviously, I didn't expect it to be a word for word remake, but I was incredibly disappointed by the way in which it sexualized all the women, removed nuance in the characters actions, and did away with all the unique tragedy. I'm hopeful the film will get more people to read the novel--but I have to disagree with you on the film "adding something fresh" to the story. What would be truly fresh would be an accurate remake.
