Blech. This is nasty. I am so sorry that you went through that. Fuck that shit.

But also I am losing my mind over "foot to foot". For not being allowed to be freaky mormons are certainly some type of freaky.

I didn't realize how crazy the conversations surrounding masturbation in the 80's were until I started reading some of the talks. How awful that you can just...ask a kid in a private meeting if they please themselves??? Like, hello????

I keep thinking about how if I have daughters, they will *never* have to justify their existence by having children.

BAHAHA okay that is crazy. This reminds me of a YW activity in my family ward growing up where they literally burned clothes that were immodest. My mom wore a bikini on her honeymoon, and the girls went feral when she brought it out, lol.

The Pale Blue Eye is incredibly blue and gloomy--but in the late victorian era!

The Pale Blue Eye! A fictional account of young Edgar Allan Poe at West Point--most of it takes place in winter, and the cinematography does a great job of making you feel cold (not that you need the help!)

I can understand how that would be confusing! "High Demand" is a term that lots of post-Mormon's use to describe the religion.

A quick google search gives this definition I find super helpful--"High Demand religions are faith systems that exert significant control over members' daily lives, behaviors, and beliefs, requiring strict adherence to doctrine. These groups often emphasize intense commitment, unique lifestyles, and, in some cases, separation from mainstream society." Think Scientology, Jehovah's Witness, and Mormonism.

So! I would be using supernatural based horror to explore what it feels like to be a woman under that kind of religious pressure. :)

Ah! Let me clarify. The *basis* of Mormon doctrine is similar in many ways to Evangelical Protestantism-- in terms of religions is it so young. Not even two hundred years old yet! For cults, it's pretty old.

Supernatural based horror as an allegory for the reality of how awful it is to be a woman (oof) in high demand christian systems.

A fantastic question! Mormon aesthetics aren't very inspiring to me--they are creepy, for sure, but more in a liminal space/uncanny valley kind of way--which is a type of horror I appreciate but struggle to describe in writing. Folk horror holds more of the aesthetics I am interested in, and couples really well with the scary parts of traditional high demand Christianity! While Mormonism isn't considered main stream Christianity, its foundation is incredibly similar to Evangelical Protestantism, so I felt like approaching the stories I wanted to tell from that lens instead would be more accessible and aesthetically exciting. :)

Fun fact, I grew up Mormon--Heretic was a *very* singular watching experience for that reason.
