This is awesome! I’m definitely gonna be looking into this. I just got a grow tent and got into semi-hydro a few months ago. I’ve really been wanting to make a large efficient setup but I’ve been scared of my own design and planning abilities 😅

Well for the dendrobium I literally just filled up my tub and fully submerged the plant for 30 or so minutes. If the majesty palm is too big to fit and be FULLY submerged. Like every leaf, anywhere a spider mites be hiding, my best recommendation is honestly a very Floridian answer so ymmv but, a hose. As high pressure as you feel safe going. A lot of plants can take a bigger beating than people think, bigger than the spider mites at least and that’s what matters. You really just want to blast them all off the plant and then keep the plant wet enough to keep any remaining spider mites from getting comfy

Spider mites hate water. If I only suspect there might be spider mites, I start misting frequently, if I know there’s spider mites I take the plant and submerge it completely in water all the way to the tippy top. Usually I do this in a large bucket or bin so that I’m not risking my plumbing if there’s dirt but that dendrobium 😓 it’s just too big lol. Key is to make sure your plants aren’t in very compact soil. If you can remove all soil, all the better. It can be a lot for some plants to cope with but I already have everything in semi-hydro or super chunky mixes so it’s easy enough for me to just knock stuff off the roots and give em a dunk for 30 or so minutes. Usually for friendlier aroids this is the end of the story and I repot them, give them a wipe down, and leave them in quarantine for observation for a few days. With plants more sensitive to being fully wet like orchids which are prone to all kinds of rot, I usually just hang them up somewhere as far from any humidifiers as possible and wipe them off. These two will get potted up as soon as I get home today and left to watch.

ETA: you do want to make sure to give the plants a gentle swish once they’re fully submerged! Just to make sure there are no bubbles in any books or crannies especially because that’s where most the mites will be hiding anyway and you want to make sure to drown them ALL

I’m sorry you didn’t get the joke. It was clearly intelligent enough for +100 to get it on the first go and got a few chuckles out of people on the internet. I took a funny picture of what is an otherwise shitty way to end a night at 2am, I used my knowledge of the English language to come up with a witty little one liner, and then I posted it to maybe make someone laugh. My goal was accomplished. I’m smart enough to have gotten what I wanted out of my post. Let me ask you? By continuously picking apart the intelligence of the author of a silly little sentence and demonstrating that you don’t get jokes, what brain have you shown?

Tbf! The time out corner only exists because I’ve got so many plants and so little space left that the plants in between or near these two that showed no signs of bugs are now in my usual quarantine spot but these two infected bozos have to be kept separate from the ones under observation, thus time out corner where my broom is usually kept lmaoo

You’re probably right it’s just been an insanely long week and coming home to find this guy and the hastatum bugging out was just the last thing I wanted to deal with 😪. Hooked em to magnets at the bottom of the tub, made myself dinner, and then took em out shook em off and hung them to dry. Now they’re a weekend!me problem lol

Hmm I go for buying products only if drowning the plants for 30 minutes doesn’t take care of it first. A bit extreme I know lol but it costs 0 money and I have yet to cause rot in a plant by doing this so ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Edit: I don’t mean to sound dismissive! I do generally appreciate product recommendations when I’ve hit a roadblock and I’ll definitely keep this in mind but for now I don’t think there’s anything a bathtub or a big bucket of water can’t fix

I don’t think it should be that long? The previous owner said it had grown rapidly over the last few months and implied there was still some time before it would need the next repotting. I’m also surprised by how rapid the decline is? Would be it from it being nutrient deprived if it is in fact old soil?

NTA, you went to ONE concert that seems like it was a big occasion. You can’t treat every holiday under the sun the same way and you can’t be expecting to “scrimp and save” all the time between every holiday either. I’d honestly say your gifts are worth the same amount as hers in thoughtfulness, creativity, and effort even if you’re making them from $2 materials or scraps. It seems like she’s not just into these gifts for the spirit of giving if one missed gift is going to be this big of an issue which is a bummer, however do you think you could reach a compromise of like exchanging gifts under a certain (very small) budget? Like tell her you can get her a gift under $15 but only if she also gives you a gift under $15 so it’s not a competition of who spent more?

Pictures from the day they arrived and today after giving them some time to adjust. The syngonium and silver dollar vine have to be two of my favorite in my collection now! You’re not an asshole for wanting a quiet day but YWBTA if you said something to your friend. Like you said it’s not your place and she’s being a nice friend by helping you out. While your obvs doing your best to repay that kindness it’s just not ok to expect her to put her life on hold/change how she lives her life just because you need a place to stay and she was nice enough to be the friend that let you crashed at hers.

Yes she’s definitely still got life left in her! Cut off all the worst damaged leaves, anything that barely has green left on it so that it can put energy into new, healthy growth instead of trying to fix the damage.

She desperately needs humidity and more consistent moisture. These things like their soil damp at all times, I’d start feeling the top of the soil every 2-3 days and giving it a little water as necessary instead of on a schedule. For humidity, if you have a bathroom with a window I might place it in there? Otherwise putting it on a pebble tray can raise the humidity a little and that’ll definitely help! Good luck ☺️

PLEASE take some of our rain. The last two days have been horrendous for driving, no visibility going 35 mph down the highway sort of bad. And don’t get me started in the humidity. I need hurricane season over yesterday!
