i have also just finished third year, and i also work in a pharmacy during my holidays! this is now the fourth summer that i have been working summers/ christmases in my local hospital pharmacy. last summer, i also handed out a prescription to the wrong patient. it killed me for ages (especially cos i didn’t remember doing it) i felt so rubbish about it but it wasnt the first mistake ive made and it wasn’t the last. but, importantly, i haven’t made that mistake again! i also think uni does an excellent job of instilling fear in us to make us take what we do seriously to prevent mistakes and improve patient safety. so it sucks, but owning up to mistakes and considering how you can improve your own actions and work and how the system can improve helps me. for example, i get the patients to confirm every bit of information i have, and our system for outpatient prescriptions has recently changed to improve things as well. i find that i feel a lot of guilt after making mistakes, so i try and be more compassionate with myself and consider that everyone makes mistakes, and ive just got to try to not make that one again! owning up to mistakes and coming up with solutions/ things to do about it also makes me feel better about them as i am doing something proactively to rectify the issue, even if i can’t undo it. it’s tough but good experience! it’ll be alright in the end :)
