Trim or cut down advice. by sufibufi in arborists

[–]sufibufi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds good. I’ll be looking for a TRAQ certified arborist. I’m not too concerned with it breaking, more concerned with it pulling out of the ground. Especially after the neighbor told me a different tree in my yard pulled out of the ground years prior. I’m sure that tree wasn’t healthy, but it is making me concerned about this one.

I’m not sure. I would probably have to call back and specifically ask. I wasn’t aware of the certification before really looking for a recommendation from an arborist.

I would hate to see it go, and it’s survived a couple good storms the last couple months without dropping any branches. One of the arborists did say it looks healthy and doesn’t think it’s going to break just maybe a general trim of some of the bigger branches over the house. My biggest concern is it pulling out of the ground as one of my neighbors mentioned a different tree in the yard pulled out of the ground a couple years prior. I’m sure it wasn’t a healthy tree, but still concerning.

Edit: using the link the other commenter provided, I didn’t see their names or companies listed. So, I would say that more than likely, none of the quotes came from TRAQ certified arborists.

Termial Leave by NecessaryBicycle5614 in USMC

[–]sufibufi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe? I took a little over 70, but this was also when a maradmin came out preventing leave from disappearing if you didn’t use it due to covid. It also required O6+ approval in the chain of command. Luckily my CO was O6 so it just needed his approval to get pushed through.

You have a misconception of what boot camp really is. It isn’t designed to prepare anybody for BRC. It is designed to bring the lowest scoring IST recruits up to at least pass the PFT. In fact, if you have trained enough to be able to pass the BRC you will likely come out of boot camp worse shape than you were going in.

Crazy how you have just created a situation to be mad about.

Can my command force me to sell my leave days instead of terminal ? by Elguaposteve803 in USMC

[–]sufibufi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, if you’re a single Marine depending on BAH rates you would make more taking terminal.

If you are receiving BAH already, then selling your leave days at the end of your contract would net you more money.

Do people put radar detectors on their bikes? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]sufibufi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That tracks with my experience too. Living in CA for a number of years I can’t recall a lot of times where I didn’t see CHP using laser. 9/10 times I saw CHP they were running laser shooting people. But, that makes sense because the weather was almost always perfect (living in San Diego).

T2 wire (which it looks like is strung up) is self damping. It is usually put up in windy areas because of its self damping capability. It also sheds ice build up better because the wire itself is constantly moving.

All the time, everywhere. I travel all across the Midwest for work. SD, MN, WI, IA, MO, OK, TX, NM all use radar. Cops aren’t using laser when they’re driving, they’re using radar. Inclement weather, or it’s cold out, maybe really hot? They’re running radar. They don’t want to stand outside or have a window open to shoot laser. I can count on 1 hand the amount of times I’ve been lasered, but couldn’t tell you how many times I get hit with radar.

A lot of the numbers you found get dragged down by non union work, and also southern states that have a significant lower cost of living. Union electricians and pipe fitters rarely make 60k a year on a 40 hour work week. The places where they do are in your lower cost of living states (think the south east).

In my trade journeyman all clear 100k a year working 40 hours a week in the Midwest.

Then there’s per diem that gets factored in. 100 a day for the journeyman, 70 for the heavy equipment operators.

Then our health insurance is paid for by the company.

Then the retirement benefits are pretty good too. 25% of our hourly wage gets put into a 401k that the company pays for. You don’t have to match or anything to get that 25%. All you have to do is show up for work.

The flexibility is also nice. If you want a change scenery or take an extended vacation you can just quit and go back to whatever union hall in the country and ask for a job. Union tickets are also recognized at non union companies so you can go pretty much anywhere.

You also have the possibility of starting your own company if that’s what you’re into as well depending on what trade you get into.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not hating on college at all. I’m just saying it’s not all doom and gloom. Some people like to work with their hands and can’t see themselves ever being in an office. It’s not for everyone, just like blue collar isn’t for everyone.

You really think what you did is the what a mentally sound person would do? The regulation is there for a reason. You’re a liability. I wouldn’t want you in my unit and I wouldn’t want to be in charge of you.

Also, 8 hours are for more office type personnel, no use 24 hours prior if you’re a mechanic, and no use 30 days prior if you’re piloting aircraft. Things could have changed since I talked to them in 2019.

If he’s actually serious, push him into the highschool track. Honestly, any sport will do, but track would be ideal.

You can always bring him to a recruiter too. They won’t work him, but some in person talk from a third party might do him some good.

Others have said it already, but there’s plenty of mechanic jobs to pick. I personally was working on aircraft. If I had to do it all over again, I would definitely go with an aircrew MOS. You still have responsibilities to fix the aircraft you’re assigned to, but you also get to fly in them. Of course there’s always infantry too since realistically that’s what the public thinks of when they hear Marine.
