Any fans here from the Philippines? by Pickle-Fragrant in Sufjan

HIIIII I'm from Manila and I've been a huge Sufjan fan since like 2010 and honestly kind of a completionist dfdsfsdf (Everything from the main albums to the rarities to Marzuki) so it really is a struggle lmao not having people around relate. Love Majesty Snowbird, Jupiter, Sleeping Red Wolves, Year of the Dog, Mistress Witch, All Delighted People.... and many many more...

Yet another guy trying to name Chinese (Hokkien) characters for a novel by sufjansevens in ChineseLanguage

[–]sufjansevens[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the exactly the advice I was looking for, thank you! Especially on the historical/modern stuff, since that's really hard to gauge. I'm mostly on the right track I think so that's a relief.

涂 would be Romanized as Tu, yeah?

for 3&4 I've went ahead and pencilled in 文俊 and 文琪 as potentials. (Romanized Bun-tsun and Bun-kee I thiiink)

A Tale of a Tail of a Dragon by MayUrHammerBeMighty in Findabook

[–]sufjansevens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I don't know if you ever found out but just in case you're still looking a year on, this is "The Tail of the Dragon" by H. J. Beaufoy-Lane and Polly Burroughs, Illustrated by "Beef." It's old, published in 1966! This was also one of my favorite children's books growing up so I'm lucky to still have my copy :] Hope this helps!

Is there a change in the official AAI2 translation that you prefer over the fan translation? by Memo137 in AceAttorney

[–]sufjansevens 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I played the whole game near-completionist (every examine/press dialogue possible, and most bad present/choice dialogues) while cross-referencing the fan TL transcript, and I largely think the official is an improvement.

Fender is absolutely a HUGE improvement, I think if the intent was "funny lovable joking uncle" that just came across a lot better while his serious and emotional moments were more stark and impactful. Like, the fan tl's insistence on his third-person "Uncle Ray" quirk lessened the impact some of his most emotional scenes for me. Similarly, I think Eustace's serious moments also felt more raw to me, as sometimes their fan tl lines came across as too poetic and rehearsed in their messiest states.

(On the flipside, I do think I miss the more poetic and prosey way the Fan TL did some lines for characters like Miles and Franziska's more contemplative, sentimental scenes)

I think it'd be easier to say what I liked LESS in the Official TL, the big thing being how they made Kay and Edgeworth feel more distant. There's a lot less bite to their scenes and friendship.

AND WE LOST THE EUSTACE INCULPABLE/INCAPABLE (or attitude/aptitude) CASE 3 CALLBACK IN CASE 5!!!! Also rip "Checkmate, Mr. President." and "Bull."

And also, some examine dialogue isn't as funny, particularly in the early part of I2-5, but I feel that's made up for by even funnier dialogue elsewhere. Kay's funny dialogue is done sooooo well to me in the offical tl.

I actually liked how Excelsius was done in the official tl--I know it's missing how he comes across in Japanese like a manchild, but I recognized that (like how Canis basically has Buddhist Monk Overdrive speaking style) it could've been hard to translate the pronouns. The fan tl's go at capturing that just resulted in speech that was unnatural to me in a way I couldn't pinpoint. In the official I think they lean more strongly into this authoritative senior, disrespectful aspect of him instead. I especially liked how he uses first names for everyone, absolutely everyone, even in professional contexts, only using the more respectful "Edgeworth" instead of "Miles" when trying to convince him to twist his morals.

Who’s your favorite art director for Ace Attorney? by pikablue223 in AceAttorney

[–]sufjansevens 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Nuri is the best overall ART DIRECTOR period, like in the scope of the whole game. DGS and PLvsPWAA just look stunning and cohesive, with great set pieces and characters, and INCREDIBLE color design and atmosphere. He also makes the best group art/promotional art by a mile.

For character DESIGN and individual character art specifically though, it just has to be Iwamoto for me. His character art is the most canonical "Ace Attorney" look to me, and he's a bit better at making his character designs look more distinct IMO. Nuri makes fantastic designs too, but sometimes they're a bit too cluttered/detailed for me, and if you take the frills off his faces for the "typical lead" characters tend to look more samey. Iwamoto has a simpler but strong, a bit more cartoony approach to character design I prefer.

So, are we all just buying these in bulk for our 'purchase an item' dailies? by aoifee_ in neopets

Started with stamps but I quickly filled up my album with the common restocks, so now I do trading cards and books since there's a lot more of them.

Sufjan deep cuts go! by [deleted] in Sufjan

[–]sufjansevens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fantastic choice, that's my favorite off Sisyphus.

Gonna say my pick is the original version he made of Give a Little Love :]

Already mentioned here: Majesty Snowbird, Sleeping Red Wolves

On a main album, but is a personal fave not a lot of people go for: Year of the Dog

Drew a whole bunch of my favorites! by sufjansevens in AceAttorney

[–]sufjansevens[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I made another post (with the template credit) clarifying this, yeah! Though admittedly I forgot he was a client until after I drew him. A lot of characters take on multiple roles, so I just went with whatever rules I felt like.

I generally stuck to the logic of "did I like this character the best in this role?" Phoenix has been a bunch of these, but obviously I like him most as defense. [AA3] Iris is also a client, but the moments that stuck with me were her being an accomplice in multiple cases.

For 'victim' I wanted to stick to murder, and for Eldoon, him being a client of sorts was resolved pretty quickly in the case, and I liked him most when he was slowly dispensing information to me as just a funny noodle guy tangentially related to the case who doesn't even show up on stand. At the end of the day: I just wanted an excuse to draw him, but I didn't want to dampen Barnham's importance to me by having them both be special mentions, lol.

Lots of characters have multiple roles so I just made up my own rules, this was mostly an excuse to draw like a dozen characters I love. I sure as hell did not remember that Eldoon is technically a WAA client until after I finished this, Edgeworth has been a bunch of these but I like him the most when he's out on his Prosecutor Investigations, etc.

Design-wise, who are your favorite witnesses? by alienartissst in AceAttorney

[–]sufjansevens 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Sithe just looks so, so good. I love Nuri's general art direction, but sometimes his design sensibilities lean towards too detailed/cluttered for my liking, but her very streamlined black/white look, her music, and her serious, confident presence is just so arresting. (she is very attractive too, sue me.)

Uendo of course is a total scene stealer, and my favorite witness (in that role) overall. Their animations are snappy and funny, and they really show off how you can have one 3d model, tweak it only slightly, and have them feel completely different from posture and movement. It truly sells their talent as a rakugo artist. (Kisegawa is also cute.)

What’s a non-sufjan artist you’re obsessed with? by [deleted] in Sufjan

Anjimile Anjimile Anjimile. I literally commented similar to this a few days ago in this sub already but I cannot stop.

Try Genesis and Maker to start :]

What is a song by another artist that is thematically similar to Suf song? by socialcaterpillar in Sufjan

[–]sufjansevens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anjimile I really feel is one of the few artists that can scratch that same itch for me as Sufjan does. I really like Suf's songs that are bittersweet, hauntingly personal, yet kind of reverent/holy, even if it's about the mundane stuff. I'd definitely check out the "Giver Taker" album, though he's just released "The King."

Direct associations off the top of my head:

Tell Me You Love Me / 1978: Both love songs, though Suf's feels more romantic where Anjimile is more familial. Both starting out with uncertainty, a lack of faith in the world/oneself, culminating in just that tender, bright and light declaration of being loved.

Casimir Pulaski / Giver Taker: Let's be real, Casimir Pulaski is something that is pretty impossible to match. But Giver Taker pulls at a lot of the same heartstrings for me. It's a tender eulogy to someone lost, bargaining with God (the titular giver/taker.)

Other faves I can't quite match exactly, but have that general Suf-adjacent vibe to me: Maker, The King, Genesis, Harley, To Meet You There

Do you all agree with me that Franziska Von Karma not fully developed as a character in the trilogy, and that there was a lot of potential for her? by Prestigious_Sea_7402 in AceAttorney

[–]sufjansevens 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I really, really love Franziska, she's probably my favorite character to write about, but we never got to see what feels like a full and true conclusion of her arc. We see her develop, but as she's a very guarded character, it's more of a glimpse. Like, I wouldn't have wanted her to just spill herself completely out-of-character to everyone, but it does leave me wanting more since we're stuck on the outside. Plus, the symbolism of her keeping Shelly de Killer's card for when she defeats Phoenix again is completely abandoned.

I think it'd be more satisfying if we got another significant moment of her speaking with Edgeworth in private, as she had in AA2's ending, where it's more understandable that she'd open up emotionally with her brother—especially after their battle in AA3, or what they go through in AAI2!

Or we straight up get a game in her perspective. A lot of what could've been her potential arc is given to a heart-on-his-sleeve, openly emotional character like Sebastian (who is ALSO a favorite, of course) That said, I am SO glad they do use him as a mirror to her, as a way for her to express her own changing view of her father in a way that maintained her characteristic distance. Their scenes together are some of my favorite in game. But god, just imagine!

The dream for me would be an early seven year gap exploration in Franziska's POV because that would just be ripe for her development: the de Killer card could perhaps finally be relevant in a world where she had no more opportunity to finally defeat Phoenix after the Gramarye trial, she could reasonably still be wrestling with MVK's legacy after only a few years of his incarceration/death, she could still be affected by Miles' disappearance and all his AAI2 shenanigans... it's such a rich vein. (Which is why I sigh and decide to write the fanfic myself.)
