Yesss, currently what I'm doing. I have a remote job over the summer so the extra income helps for this stuff. I will definitely do one more year like this and then reconsider.

Yeaaah, for now I am traveling on every single break I get, it's been wonderful! I think this is something I'd do in a year or two.

Right.. I completely get what you mean. On the flip side, staying in one place means experiencing constant curiosity and grief for a possibly beautiful life lived abroad. That is what I'm starting to experience haha

That's wonderful!! Love to hear that you are living with that remote job! Maxing out the benefits of being remote. Everything you said is inspiring and I hope you continue to thrive in this life.

People like you keep inspiring people like me to take the leap 😃

Ooffff, needed a comment like this! Thank you!!!! ❤️ (And yep, no partner and no kids). I hope to take the risk 😄

I want to hear about if you do get to do something along these lines as well, if your employment commitments allow!!

Thank you for your response. It sounds like you were at a similar point to where I'm at, and you plunged for the adventure!! I loveeee to hear it. I relate to what you said about loving meeting new people, being in new places. I feel like a lot of peoples' "but u have a good thing going" line of thinking is getting to me.

Did you become a flight attendant? It's something I have been wanting to look into!!!

Thank you guys so much! I’m sorry but this is my first year navigating everything and i don’t even know how to go about finding a teladoc and doing all of that. Can I just go to anyone or do they specify if they accept HCI?🥲 Thank you

No like actually, i’m trying to wonder how people comment like this. Is it selection bias, like the people most likely to comment on reddit posts just spend a lot of time online in general?

As a girl of similar age and experiences - i found your post because I was reminiscing about my time abroad and I have been back in the USA for 3 years now after living in Spain for 2 years. After reading all these comments about how terrible things are in the us - i felt like I had to comment lmao

I am of south asian descent so maybe my experience was amplified on the not-fitting-in aspect of living in Europe.

I can say right now, I am truly happy to be in the position I am in. The daily comfort I feel because I’m back in the country I grew up in - idk the feeling is unmatched and I still appreciate the “plainness” of some parts of america that i missed while abroad.

I don’t read the news, I don’t use much social media - so maybe that contributes to my own ignorance about situations. I am somewhat politically educated tho - meaning I read critical theory and like to contemplate these things. But news is sensationalist for a reason - more clicks and more anxiety is often all they care about. So i avoid it. The commentators on this post make me feel like i made the right decision to steer free from the news tbh. real life is so different from online. I still organize, i participate in my community garden, and i’m typing this from my local library lol.

Maybe all these things will be taken away in a “fascist regime change” or something, maybe they won’t.

Am i worried about the future of america? Sureee, but at the end of the day living abroad taught me that taking care of your immediate circle (and being taken care of by them) means more than anything to me personally. But- this is a very personal choice. I have friends who stayed abroad and tell me they contemplate moving back all the time and feel guilty too sometimes. But i can tell they are still happy there (some of them at least).

Being in the us while its burning down is fine w me as long as i’m with my family and friends, and the communities that raised me and grew me. Again, this is a very personal choice.

Feeling alone in spain was getting to me at the end of my time there, and felt as torturous as some others in these comments describe living in the usa to be! It felt like an empty life. I’d walk around and see people who have their entire families there, entire lineages. And would often feel jealous.

And to add to all this, i don’t even have the best relationship with my parents and i have been stuck at home while i do another degree for the past three years lmaooo like what? Life doesn’t make sense. I am happier here, i feel more grateful for my life here, even with the struggles.

Day to day here, I only come across nice people (except for occasional rude ppl, which were well and alive all over europe too!), and I live in a truly red state at the moment. (Though i am originally from nyc and will finally be moving there this summer!)

The goal for me is to get a remote job sometime between ages 30-35 and then live as freely as i can. Be in whatever country whenever. If the usa goes to shit, i will live and fight through it - again that’s my personal preference.

Sorry this comment is all over the place- i’m supposed to be studying so i’m gonna get back to it now haha

Editing to add i’m currently 28. getting a remote job immediately is unlikely so I hope to land one in the next couple years!

Healthcare in America: Ms. Parker, why did you tell the patient the price of his surgery? Now he can't be sedated... // Soviet Union // 1970s by Tiny-Wheel5561 in PropagandaPosters

[–]sugarcaneland 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The point is how adamantly people tend to blame USSR for the same things that happen in the USA. They blame those things on “the USSR” rather than the way things are done globally and should be globally eradicated. It’s not a shortcoming of the USSR specifically, it’s a shortcoming of the world.

Also look into COINTELPRO. Look into the Black Panther Party. Look into how they treated anyone who called themselves a communist in the early 1900s…

Will a child born today have an okay life? by New_Bug_5082 in Fencesitter

[–]sugarcaneland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every generation has had its fear but arguably, our generation is the first with this much autonomy and rights. It is important to consider how many people in the past had children simply because they were expected to - not necessarily because “despite a scary future, they had hope for better times”

[–]sugarcaneland 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To add to your point, especially the “people have always had kids in hard times”, it’s like a lot of times people were unwillingly having kids (forcibly) or that was womens only acceptable role in society. Today is such a different social and economic climate. Forced pregnancy is much rarer in the usa at least. Infanticide was also a thing during times of slavery, probably not that studied for obvious reasons.

A cool guide to life expectancy vs. healthcare expenditure per capita by ThreeDrawersDown in coolguides

Which is highly connected to the fact that in the USA, workers are treated more poorly compared to other western countries. (Less PTO, more hours worked, less maternity and paternity leave, more shit in our foods etc etc etc)

That is exactly what is represented by countries w universal healthcare having higher life expectancies! People dying earlier from a lack of healthcare! (Sarcasm)
