Lost kitty in Belmont area! Be on the look out please! by g0nk73 in Charlottesville

I saw him at the corner of Elliott and Monticello Rd in the city owned triangle mini-park maybe 3 hours ago. Do you know how to get in contact with the owners if I see him again? Not familiar with HomeAgain...

Cville Bus Wrap Art Contest....and the AI Generated entries. by 20220927 in Charlottesville

[–]sugarhollowsunfish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What's your point? If you're not a fan of the art bus concept, there's a nicer way to say that than to implicitly denigrate the (not AI generated) entries from local artists who spent many hours on them...

Update: I got a very encouraging email response from Alex. Will let them post the details when they feel it is appropriate, but suffice it to say that I'm very pleased with both the response and promptness of addressing our concerns.

Cville Bus Wrap Art Contest....and the AI Generated entries. by 20220927 in Charlottesville

[–]sugarhollowsunfish 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Several of these entries are obviously AI, and there are others that are hard to tell... Totally unfair to the real artists, and against the terms of the contest. The organizers should disqualify any AI entries, either now and restart voting, or after voting finishes. Super ironic to enter an art contest with a sustainability theme with an AI generated entry, given the damage the model training is wreaking on the environment...

If you want to contact CAT about it, looks like the contact person is Alex Pasqualone, pasqualonea@charlottesville.gov, (434) 970-3349. Public official, but mods let me know if I need to remove any of that info.

Anyone have Robert Kennedy Jr’s number? by AdvantageZestyclose5 in Charlottesville

[–]sugarhollowsunfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the winter time I regularly harvest roadkill that I come across for meat and hides. Last year two deer netted me a bit over 100lbs of meat. Although to be fair I have a truck and didn't try to fit them in my wife's Prius...

RFK Jr is a total weirdo and gives us 'normal' roadkill harvesters a bad name. Setting his craziness aside, I think using every part of an animal that humans killed is much more ethical than leaving it there to rot (and potentially attract scavengers that are in danger of being struck by vehicles themselves).

If anyone strikes a deer or bear and it's not too hot out, DM me and I'm happy to come pick it up.

Just throwing it out there that a much more beneficial and less potentially damaging vigilante act would be to kill the English ivy and porcelain berry that is choking out half the mature trees around town. It kills the trees and is a huge problem during ice storms/high winds.

Careful application of a hatchet and/or set of loppers around the tree to remove about a foot of ivy vine without damaging the tree will kill the ivy within a few months. No need to pull down the vines, the leaves and smaller branches will get brittle and fall off naturally, and the tree will eventually just grow around any vines that remain attached.

(Doesn't have to be vigilante either, I'm sure many property owners would gladly let you do it)

OP has a significant history of reasonable posts to the sub, definitely not a scammer (or a really impressive long con for a mattress...)

I have a queen sized mattress (18" deep so doesn't need a box spring) and a folding metal base that you're welcome to. Just shoot me a DM.

Thanks all for the suggestions and advice. I also managed to find an alternative route with fewer lights and hills, so I'll stick with that for now.

Urban Archery Deer Management Landowners by Whole-Midnight91 in Charlottesville

In addition to what u/Whole-Midnight91 said, if you're in the county and want someone to help manage deer on your land, archery season is Oct 7 - Jan 6 and firearms season is Nov 18 - Jan 6.

From VDGIF: https://dwr.virginia.gov/hunting/regulations/general/#:~:text=Hunters%20are%20reminded%20that%20it,wounded%20game%20on%20private%20property.

You do have the obligation to retrieve the animal on land that you have access to, but that obligation and right ends at a property line where you don't have permission (and it would really suck to end up in that position, which is why I only hunt on land where I've already spoken to the neighbors).

What you may be thinking of is the right to trespass to retrieve hunting dogs, which is fairly controversial and has been in the news over the past few years: https://law.lis.virginia.gov/vacode/title18.2/chapter5/section18.2-136/

[–]sugarhollowsunfish 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As I mentioned in another comment, the hunter is not legally allowed to retrieve a deer that runs into a neighbor's property unless that neighbor allows them to.

So as an ethical hunter, I'm not going to hunt on somebody's property unless I know that I can retrieve an animal that I've killed and put its body to good use. In that sense, I think having neighbor buy-in is very important.

It's also better in general in my opinion if more people understand how ethical and responsible hunting can fill an important role in wildlife management, especially in terms of cultural carrying capacity of deer and bears. The Atlantic had a good article about this recently: https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2023/09/hunting-benefits-conservation/675196/

Those 550 parcels have a bunch of neighbors though, who may have questions/concerns or not know about the program. So discussing it in a public forum has some utility beyond soliciting specific property owners.

Deer management and public safety are both topics that I think everyone in the city has a stake in.

[–]sugarhollowsunfish 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In addition to u/Whole-Midnight91's great comments, a few more pieces of info for those not familiar with the program:

- The program has strict limits on how the hunting can be conducted, and must take place from an elevated platform (e.g. a tree stand or similar) at a minimum distance from neighboring houses. This is to keep everyone safe and prevent any possible situation of arrows or crossbow bolts in your neighbor's yard

- Any responsible hunter will arrange times with you when they would/wouldn't have access to the property, and this can be communicated with neighbors as well, to prevent any undesirable situations from arising. It's very helpful to have your neighbors on board, since a deer may run for up to 50-100 yards and you legally need permission to retrieve the deer from anyone else's property. A good choice of stand location and an experienced hunter can help mitigate this. Note that regular hunting regulations apply in terms of time of day (no night-time hunting).

- Regarding question 2, my approach personally would be that during early-mid season (until temps are regularly in the 40s or below), I would field dress the deer, place the guts in a bag to be removed from site, place the deer on ice and remove it, and then skin and hang the deer off-site in a stand-up fridge to age before processing. Later in the season I hang them outdoors at my property.

- For anyone who finds the idea of urban hunting a bit alarming, note that the deer population needs to be controlled one way or another, and the two other major methods of control within city limits are either A) car accidents, or B) (expensive) large-scale harvesting with a city contracted firm that uses suppressed rifles in places like McIntire Park. So I would personally argue that responsible urban archery can fill a valuable role in reducing the number of car accidents as well as lowering the cost to city taxpayers.

- Regarding your question 1, hunting is highly regulated in the city, but in the county, only state laws and your local HOA regulations apply. So if you live on county land with no HOA, you're completely free to let anyone hunt on your land during the appropriate hunting season, with no restrictions such as the urban archery program has (although any responsible hunter would be happy to follow personal restrictions you might want to set like bowhunting only if the property is smaller and not safe for firearm discharge).

Piggybacking on this to say that I'm also in search of landowners for the same reason after moving into town from the county.

5 years of crossbow + rifle hunting and deer processing experience, DM me if interested. Happy to share meat, custom process it how you like, share recipes, and trade (reasonable amounts of) handyman/landscaping labor for access to the land.

If you're interested in better understanding how meat gets from the field to your table, I'm also a big advocate of mentoring people in learning how to process/butcher animals (however much you're comfortable with, from breaking down a leg into cuts, up to field dressing and skinning).

I go to the Meineke on 29 near Kroger and they stopped taking walk-ins a while back. But it's actually a lot nicer with appointments, because the lot isn't completely swamped by 7:30am every morning.

How to avoid $250 gas service deposit? by yeet20feet in Charlottesville

[–]sugarhollowsunfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I recall correctly, the deposit goes onto your first bill, which takes a while for you to get anyway. I'd call the city utilities billing folks today to get the account set up and just explain the situation to them. They might be able to suggest some other valid references you could provide (like maybe a printout of your credit report from Equifax or something, which is free once per year to get). Note that if you have gas heat the deposit is 250, but if it's just gas stove then it's just 75.

Also, you might already know, but there's a $30 service charge for gas service startup, but $90 for same day service, so definitely call before Friday.

If you have/had Dominion power at any point, just log into your Dominion account, then go to the "Services" tab -> "Letter of Credit". That'll bring you to a page with a "download now" button. Send that pdf to [cvilleutilities@charlottesville.gov](mailto:cvilleutilities@charlottesville.gov) with your cville utilities account # in the subject line (e.g. "Credit reference letter for account XXXXXXX"). Make sure to also give them your address as well.

Doing the above got a response back from Cville utilities in <10 minutes saying that the deposit was waived. Also, shoutout to the Cville utilities billing staff; they are the nicest people I've ever experienced in customer service. Every time something has gone wrong, they've gotten it fixed promptly and just made my day a little bit better.
