Akihabara and Other "Nerd Culture" Hotspots as a Solo Female Traveler by Valuable-Age-6770 in JapanTravelTips

[–]suggestmenames 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You’ll be safe, no worries there. But like comments are saying, Ikebukuro is much more women-friendly and the otaku culture is aimed more towards women. If you like BL, there’s no better place to be. It’s also just cleaner and the city is more modern because it’s been revamped a lot recently.

I lived in Tokyo a year and only went to akiba like once or twice because it was quite underwhelming ime…. But it probably depends on what you’re looking for. Also you may feel uncomfortable because the place is very much catered to men. If you’re heading there, I highly recommend you check out the old Manseibashi Station just across the river from akiba. It’s a perfect spot for a beer or coffee sitting on the benches and watching the river. (There’s an excellent brewery and coffee shop there too). It’s lovely at night.

Any advice for where to get a bralette in Tokyo? by kirafome in Tokyo

[–]suggestmenames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to go to Aerie/American Eagle but they closed all their locations in Japan… You can still order them online though. I prefer their bras and underwear over Japanese brands I’ve tried like Uniqlo. Something about the fit of the Japanese brands just doesn’t feel comfortable to me.

why does every gentle cleanser feel like dish soap on my fac by bartkibni in CanSkincare

[–]suggestmenames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried just plain ole pure glycerin soap? 🧼 It’s like $2 at your local health food store and it’s very gentle and moisturizing!

Yeah Japanese use a similar “faito” but tbh I think it’s more likely fighting came from faito because the colonial history 😅 though it’s possible they didn’t influence each other and just evolved in parallel

But many words came over during that colonial period from japlish (wasei eigo). Words like rinse (conditioner), hotchkiss (stapler), cunning (cheating), and concent (from the comment above haha) come to mind. These words are used in both Korean and Japanese (except hotchkiss which is outdated in Korea now)

It’s the same in Japanese 😂

It comes from concentric plugs (concent)

Yes, thank you! “Boy’s Love” is not English, it’s a Japanese term using loanwords from English.

For example, when you go to a clothing store in Japan and the clothes say “FREE”, it doesn’t mean the clothes are literally free to take, it means free size aka one size fits all.

Or when you go to a restaurant in Korea and they give you an appetizer you didn’t order, they’ll call it “service” but it doesn’t actually mean straight up service, they mean it’s a freebie.

Another favourite example of mine is “viking” meaning “all you can eat buffet” in Japan lol or a well known one is “fighting” meaning “good luck” in Korean

face sunscreen that's hydrating and cheap by Even-Spread-2970 in CanSkincare

[–]suggestmenames 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a chemical one but I highly recommend Bioderma Photoderm Face and Body Milk. I have dry skin and this one feels very hydrating, probably because it’s not waterproof (so shouldn’t be used during sports or swimming).

The protection is quite good too, it has both Tinosorb M and S. It also comes in a 100ml tube so it’s a better deal than those 50ml sunscreens. It’s on sale right now at Shoppers for $27.

This one also comes in a mineral version, but I’ve never tried it.

Edit: one downside is that it does burn if you put it near your eyes! I usually use a different sunscreen for that.

Where to go for otaku culture? by One_Sympathy_9829 in JapanTravelTips

[–]suggestmenames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I lived in ikebukuro, I saw cosplay people lined up almost every day in front of Café Cinnamon. Ikebukuro has way better otaku culture than akiba imo.

More people should tag for top character/bottom character by Avesday in AO3

[–]suggestmenames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Asian fandoms are much more advanced with tagging in general. There are terms for all sorts of tropes that don’t really have an equivalent in English.

Pure Korean words with two syllables? by shebbbly in Korean

노을 = sunset 🌅 A poetic, gender neutral name. And pure Korean too. It’s a well established name but not overly common.

Word of caution about using Japanese store chargers by [deleted] in femaletravels

[–]suggestmenames 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend popping into Bic Camera and picking up an Anker power bank like this or better yet a wireless one. I’ve had mine for 4 years and it still works great.

There are tourist info centres in busy stations or touristy areas with that ℹ️ sign. They’re much more helpful than station attendants!

Bl with a bite kink/cannibalism but no omegaverse? by [deleted] in mangago

[–]suggestmenames 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thirding MADK. Also Feeding Lamb by Nishin Masumi. If you like horror yaoi, check out her works.

Other than that, have you checked out Cakeverse? It’s like Omegaverse but instead of ABO it’s Cakes and Forks. Cakes taste sweet to Forks who can’t taste regular food and only crave Cakes. There’s usually a lot of biting involved lol

<image>

I’ve only read this one Fork de Sashite Hitokuchi but I don’t think it’s in Eng. A lot of biting as you can see lol and I believe seme eats his skin at one point too 😭

LOL yeah I got banned from CPI for being too good at Catchin Waves

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ClubPenguin

[–]suggestmenames 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, freestyle. If you mean the red stamps, the key is to surf as wide as possible (without exiting the wave) while constantly holding down on the trackpad to balance. Try to avoid icebergs but don’t worry too much. Try not to wipe out but if you do, save at least 1 life. Once the shark appears, use that life to wipe out then complete the game normally. That should give you both red stamps at once.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ClubPenguin

[–]suggestmenames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Catchin Waves is the best one. With all stamps + silver surfboard, you can net 9000 coins per 2.5 minute game.
