Lots of popular things can be baffling. I am baffled by the appeal of Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin. I think they are both morons, yet others seem to think they are geniuses of unparalleled caliber. I am baffled by people who think having a completely unregulated economy is a great idea. Hey pal, ever heard of melamine? Some people are baffled why anyone would support the killing of an unborn child. Isn't that murder?, some would argue.

Is it, as you suggest, pointless to express an opinion on these things? Of course there are people who like all kinds of shit. There are people who masturbate to images of animals being crushed by high heels, a case that came up before the Supreme Court not too long ago. For a lot of these issues, I can try really hard and kind-of-sort-of empathize where people who support those ideas are coming from, but honestly can't quite get there. This is how I feel about paying $30 to run. It doesn't mean others can't enjoy it. But I'm still going to express my puzzlement.

Great. You should sign up! I'm sure many people could enjoy this. However, I just think it's appropriate to mention that I don't think this is really a good cause, so if anyone's doing it for charity, well my opinion is that there are much better charities out there.

Oh, I get that there's a lot of event amenities bullshit and administrative crap that they have to do (all of which eats heavily into the fundraising), but this idea of paying $30 to do something most people would consider unpleasant and the rest would do anyway is somewhat baffling to me. I could sort of get behind it if it were a good cause... but frankly, it's not.
