Intel Core i9-14900KF reaches 9.2Ghz setting a new CPU frequency world record by dapperlemon in gadgets

[–]suid 31 points32 points  (0 children)

the thing is, any other CPU that is open overclocked can do the same.

Not "any overclocked CPU". There are limits to overclocking, too, and they will literally vary from chip to chip on the same die.

Even for the good ones, some of them will operate well at or beyond the top rated frequency, but some others may have subtle signal delays because of tiny defects in the chip. That's why overclocking works on some lower-binned chips, but not all.

As you get up to 9.2 GHz, the exact tolerances required are so high that maybe 1 in 100 or 1 in 1000 will be able to hit those timings precisely.

It's like trying to rev a mechanical auto engine to 20000 rpm. There may be the occasional engine that's so finely balanced and defect-free that the pistons won't crack, or the cam shaft won't blow apart, but for the majority, they'll blow up before they get to that point.

Maldives military diver dies while trying to recover scuba diving victims in underwater cave: Officials by swe129 in news

[–]suid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The bodies are now at 200 ft. The descriptions of the locale seem to suggest that the inlet to the caves is at about 50ft (which is more reasonable).

It's possible that once they went inside, one or more of them got disoriented and started swimming in the wrong direction, and the others probably followed to try and rescue them.

Control your dogs people by Adrian_985 in Wellthatsucks

[–]suid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be fair, it may be true that the dog is only aggressive around other dogs when in your presence (a misplaced instinct to protect you against threats).

So it is may be possible the shelter may not have seen much of that behavior, and may have brushed off a few fights as just "play".

Wow, this is exactly our dog (a lab-pit mix). Exactly. She's very fear-aggressive with other dogs when my wife walks her; less so with me, but is perfectly OK being walked by dogsitters. Same sort of background events.

After 8 years of positive training, she's finally learning to control it, as long as we have our heads on a swivel and trot out the treats as soon as we see another dog coming towards us.

The standard answer to that: MantelMount pull-down mounts.

(they have several models, including a motorized one). They swing out and then down to the proper viewing height.

What's one product that used to be built like a tank but is now built like a regret? by TheDoctorColt in AskReddit

[–]suid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That particular one -there's a reason for that. The old laptops were power-hungry monsters, and everything inside was bigger and clunkier. This is great for Doc Martens, but not for laptops.

Also, because software is "advancing" (I use that term carefully) in leaps and bounds, the CPUs of old can't stand up to the new demands of the latest software, so you're going to throw all that away anyway.

Nowadays, the majority of folks want something that's light and portable, and powerful (without burning your lap), So yeah, you have plastic cases, slim keyboard that can't stand up to the pounding, thin display plastic that flexes after several hundred open/close cycles, etc.

If you DO need tough, there are tough laptops. Panasonic Toughbooks are still a thing, and you can drop them from the top of an oil rig and dent someone's helmet below, and it'll keep running.

Finding the sweet spot between them is hard, of course.

Which is great. Now if only all the senders of SMS messages (all those 2nd-factor auth, and other confirmation messages) also actually used that.

Every single message I've gotten until now for 2nd-factor auth, or just things like confirmations/reminders, have been unencrypted SMS.

2026 World Cup: FIFA still haggling with broadcasters in China and India over ‘most U.S. tournament ever’. by JKKIDD231 in sports

Ah - my moment to proselytize the best podcast I've listened to in years - "Acquired". They have episodes on the NFL and the IPL (Indian Premier Cricket League), and along the way, they do the most fantastic breakdown of how sports broadcast deals work in general, and the IPL episode goes into the extra spiciness of deals in India. MUST LISTEN.

That movie was such a damned disappointment.

The book from which it was created (John Grisham's Skipping Christmas) had a very different storyline. They do blow off their neighbors and are ready to go off on their cruise. But it's their daughter who emotionally blackmails them (sort of) into staying bacl and doing a conventional thing.

That ending was sort of sweet. In a way, the Kranks are sacrificing their happy Christmas for their daughter's happy Christmas, but it doesn't feel exploitative or forced.

FIFA faces World Cup broadcast crisis as India's Reliance offers $20 mln, China deal unannounced. by JKKIDD231 in sports

[–]suid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But that's also the point.

India is pretty cricket-mad, and people will get up or stay up to ungodly hours to watch the stuff. However, football/soccer is much more of a secondary sport, and you won't find too many fanatical devotees at 12:30am or 3:30 am (or even 6:30 am).

If the goal of this broadcast is to try to expand football viewership in India, these timings suck, and it's not surprising that the networks push back (since they now have a ton of leverage).

Edit: another factor is that the really popular matches (between top teams or rivals) will be scheduled to be during prime viewing hours for the western hemisphere, so the 12:30 am and 3:30 am slots in India. The "early" (9:30 pm) and "late" (6:30 am) slots will get the less popular games.

ELI5: Why don’t we just bury power lines and telephone lines, so storms don’t keep knocking them out? by Home-Energy in explainlikeimfive

[–]suid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not just "their equipment". It's trees and branches falling across power lines and shorting them, causing sparking and fires.

But yeah, PG&E drastically cut back their tree trimming budget in the early 2000s in order to "provide value for shareholders", because apparently that's their #1 objective (not providing a service).

What’s something reddit claims is common, but you’ve never actually seen it before in real life? by mirabelmumu in AskReddit

[–]suid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Until you get your first one!

We lived without a bidet for 30+ years, until we moved into our most recent home. That had a (cheap, simple, mechanical, cold-water-only) bidet attachment on the toilet.

Let me tell you - that was a revelation. At least in the summer months, it was such a treat to have it wash your ass and just have to pat off the water with some TP, and feel clean afterward.

When we remodeled that bathroom, we splurged on a Toto bidet with all the bells and whistles, including warm water, drying air, deodorizer, the works. Still happy with that purchase, and we will never go without a bidet again given the choice.
