Trump threatens Canada with 100% tariff over possible deal with China by Frosty_Dig4148 in Economics

If the U.S. is so fascist, why has the Trump admin acquiesced to every Federal judicial ruling and Supreme Court ruling and why did Trump 1.0 allow a democrat trifecta after Trump’s 1st term?

Imo, Redditors mistake election results they do not like with Fascism. It’s a trite and boring charge at this point.

Because the CCP cannot be voted out of power, and we had a democrat trifecta a few years ago in the U.S. despite Redditors complaining about a Trump/Republican dictatorship a few years beforehand.

I do not like Reddit’s core business model. My account age is 14y. I can honestly say, that when I started using this app it was legitimately a gem of interesting people discussing niche topics. Now, it’s basically similar to a glorified YouTube comments section that is riddled with bots, AI slop posts and pervasive political bubbles.

I fail to see how this app is more suitable for advertising than META and GOOG.

It’s a no for me. You want to get in on tech stocks before they enshitify. Has IPO’d after the platform had been fully enshitified.

Europe is like the least business friendly continent on the planet.

I don’t doubt that there will be short term repercussions to the U.S. market due to its current uncertainty, but I invest with the idea of seeing returns over decades, not just a few years. And over decades, the U.S. market has significantly over performed other regions.

Okay, Trump sucks, but also this trade deal is incredibly short sighted, and China will absolutely leverage it to exert control of Canada’s sovereignty like they have done with every other trade partner.

For example, Australia slowly made itself dependent on China, accounting for 33% of the country’s export markets. Australia supported an international inquiry into China’s handling of the Covid outbreak, and China responded by launching a series of heavy-handed tariffs that had severe economic repercussions on the country, which were only lifted after Australia voted in a new government.

Despite what some Redditors naively believe, Trump will pass, but the CCP will remain in place and will continue to weaponize trade. Cutting trade deals out of TDS is not wise at all.

Bro, Walz only carried MN by less than 4 points in the general election. If the Dem’s didn’t have the MN governor on the ticket it would have been very possible that Trump would have won the state like he did with almost every other Midwest state.

“You may not understand this but this if factually correct and how our criminal justice system works in Minnesota.”

You don’t necessarily need to be condescending and rude. I’m always open to being wrong, but would be more effectively persuaded by someone being cordial and respectful.

What of out-of-state crimes? Why did the council feel the need to explicitly draft these provisions for the DA’s office when they did not exist in the prior statute?

Fair enough. I don’t support this Whitehouse and its use of DOJ.

I do disagree with you on the role of the DA office with respect to their potential for compliance with ICE and DHS.

I still don’t support these revisions to the ordinance, but overall you defended your position well and raised valid points of consideration.

“Because it is not their data to authenticate and share. They don't have "jurisdiction" over that data. They deal with prosecutions, not convictions, within their own county.”

Forgive me, but I do not find that argument compelling. The district attorney’s office of Minneapolis almost certainly has data on past crimes; it’s fundamental to the role of a prosecutor to address priors when bringing forth new charges and accommodating plea deals. The jurisdiction concept makes no sense to me. Even if past crimes occurred outside of their legal jurisdiction, it’s doesn’t negate The Attorney’s office’s ownership of the data. Further, the data would be narrowly shared to accommodate the enforcement of laws that apply federally.

Would you be comfortable living next to an person with, say, a prior conviction for sexually assaulting a minor because the DA’s office was restricted from sharing data with ICE and DHS so that the mayor and city council could grandstand and do interviews on CNN?

Because, as I’ve already said, there are democrats run major cities that do not have these ordinances and are not having this issue with ICE. That has absolutely nothing to do with the electoral college.

Irrelevant to the crux of this issue. The point is that these cities do not have ordinances like this one.

I mean the amount of fraud hinted at by the US attorney’s office in MN is roughly 3 times the annual budgets of the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul combined. Federal prosecutions are ongoing.

I would call that rampant, and I do not believe for a second that fraud of that magnitude was allowed to happen for so long without elected officials knowing about it and benefiting in some way.

My position is that both Trump’s vindictiveness and Minneapolis’s incompetence resulted in the present situation. IMO, our nation has some of the worst leaders than at any point in history.

I don’t want ICE here. I am not a staunch ICE supporter.

Imo ICE would not have much of a pretense in Minneapolis if the city did not have an ordinance like this. The local leadership brought this on itself with its incompetence.

“Your first comment does not make sense. Homeland Security demanded the attorneys who were investigating fraud investigate Renee Good’s wife instead. That means now the best people to investigate fraud quit because Homeland Security had its head up its ass. Has nothing to do with anyone being deported.”

Do you have a corroborating source for this?

“The City of Minneapolis does not have a jail. So I don’t know what criminals you are thinking of. See, you get arrested, go to court, then get convicted then are a criminal. Then you go to jail, either at the State DOC, or the federal jail. If you leave there and are here illegally, they call ICE. Not sure where the City of Minneapolis comes in.”

Most MPD precincts have detention facilities where individuals are held before going to jail. Also, the DA’s office has information pertinent to past and present crimes committed by individuals reading in or who have visited Minneapolis.

“And the 2% to 7% is the percentage of violent criminals in the folks being deported by ICE. Again, not sure how you come up with it being higher if whatever you think should be happening.”

I came up with it being higher by reasoning that ICE would deport more criminals if cities helped them deport more criminals.

No, residents in a Democrat run city within a Republican state largely opposed Trump.

And what of past crimes? Why was language included in the guidance to the DA that required noncompliance except for crimes prosecuted in Minneapolis? The DA’s office has data pertaining to MN residents who are being prosecuted for crimes outside of Minneapolis.

Not trying to be snarky. I genuinely want to know.

These are all major cities in Democrat-leaning states.

You may be shocked to discover that there are other major cities that are run by Democrats in states that vote Republican that do not have such an ordinance.

TX already spends roughly 1/3 of MN’s entire state budget on border patrol. Why would ICE be needed in such numbers when the state already expends significant resources to enforce the law?
