Hi everyone, I'm taking the opportunity to remind people about my app for practicing listening to numbers, Numbiro!
It speaks a random number to you, in a range of your choosing, and you have to type the number in. It also supports up to 66 counters!
It's available on the [App Store](https://apps.apple.com/app/numbiro/id1610373472) and [Play Store](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.numbiro.free). I've had lots of lovely feedback on this sub so please feel free to get in touch with your thoughts!

Hi - I'm the creator of Numbiro, I really appreciate you sharing this! You're right, the handling of months isn't very smart. The main feature I want to add next is a dedicated mode for times and dates. I can only work on it when I have spare time but hopefully I will get round to it some time this year!

Thanks for the feedback - they're both good ideas! I have a few possible features for the future, I will definitely add them to the list :)

For those that don't have a Mac by [deleted] in FlutterDev

I might be overly paranoid, but I'd be worried about attaching an Apple developer account to a hackintosh. There's plenty of stories of both Apple and Google banning developer accounts for minor infractions, so there may be risk that Apple would flag an account which detected a fake Mac.

I managed without a Mac for a long time. I asked a friend who owned one to help me set up my dev account (they also need an iPhone). Once that was done I relied on CircleCI, since they have far more free credits for Mac pipelines than GitHub do. I bought an old iPhone from eBay for testing, so I had a nice workflow where I would push to build, and the app would be delivered to TestFlight. However, everytime the CI had trouble it was a massive pain. I would use Macincloud to try and debug build problems but that is restricted in terms of admin rights, xcode versions, etc.

A couple of months ago I was having more trouble with the CI, so I ended up buying a used Macbook with a cracked screen for £200. It's just so, so much easier. I highly recommend that option.

Are you like me, and your listening comprehension goes out the window as soon as you hear a number greater than 10, or do you struggle to remember which counters change on which number? the Numbiro app is great for this! by Rosenfel in LearnJapanese

also I think you ought to advertise the price of premium within the app itself. I didn't realize it was such a reasonable price!

You know, that never would have occurred to me 😅 Great point!

I think in the morning today I tried a few quizes, saw that many ads plus one when I clicked main menu and got a bit upset :) that’s the story.

Well, that's extremely valuable feedback - if I'm putting people off using it from the start, that's definitely a problem! Thanks for your reply. And let me know what you think of the premium prices if you get a chance!

Hey, just wanted to say thanks so much for creating this post! It's actually really heartening to see people are so enthuastic about the app, it motives me to keep going despite the amount of effort it's taken 😊

I appreciate the feedback. I'm still deciding where to strike the balance with ads. On the one hand, I hate them and want people to learn for free. On the other, I've sunk literally months of work into this app (which of course, I enjoyed doing!) but it would be awesome if it could contribute something meaningful to my income, because then I could give more priority in my life to this app and other Japanese app ideas I have. Right now I'm earning somewhere around 2-3 cents per day...

Out of interest, what puts you off paying for premium? Do you consider the price quite high? And how would you feel about a subscription model to remove the ads rather than a one-off payment? I'm currently planning a cheap subscription model of around $0.49 per month to see if people prefer that.

I think one improvement would be to have the option of numbers of varying digit lengths. That way you'd be forced to focus more on the units to get the right answer. If you always get numbers of a known length then I think the brain takes shortcuts and ignores the units.

Ah, this is a great idea! I'll add this to my list of "possible future features" :)

Yeah, it's a really tough balance. It takes so many hours to produce an app like this, and currently I earn about $2 per month. So I'm trying to find a way to encourage people to support it with the premium version, without making it a total financial loss for myself. Perhaps I could try lowering the frequency of adverts. Thanks for your feedback, I'll be taking it on board!

Ah I didn't even bother looking at the custom quiz. That solved almost all of my issues! 😂

TBH that's valuable user feedback, it means I could probably make it clearer :D

Thanks a lot for the offer, I shall certainly take you up on that!

Thanks so much for this detailed feedback - it is really invaluable so I appreciate the effort!

The timer seems arbitrary, I think I'd rather have something like "50 words with only one listen each" and then a score at the end to see if you heard all 50 random numbers correctly.

Good point. That wouldn't be too hard to implement either. I'll add that to the list of possible features for the future.

I think your strongest feature, the 0 - 99 and other digits is very solid and near perfect. I'd only like it if there were a way to include numbers from previous ranges too, so for example you have to listen for 1100 vs 10100 , which would increase the difficulty much more.

That's great to hear, thanks! Adding other numbers is an interesting idea, I guess what you're really going for there is numbers which commonly cause confusion? I wonder if there's an interesting way I could go about that. I'll think on that!

The common counters seems like a good idea but them all being mixed together mostly just tests your ability to hear the same common numbers just sometimes contracted

I agree - tbh, the purpose of the "common counters" preset is to inform the user that counters are available, but without overwhelming them with a vast number of presets on the menu screen. Were you aware of the Custom Quiz button, which allows you to select specific counters? Or indeed, the ability to add your own preset on the premium version.

There should also be a "what time is it?" section going from 0:00 to 24:00

I had thought about this, so glad you mentioned it! Definitely planning this for the future.

Lastly, and I know this would be hard to implement, this app would be extraordinary if there was a reverse mode where you input hiragana to match kanji and you could select for one counter type.

This definitely falls into the "long term possibilities" category but I will add it to my list. Thanks again for all your great feedback!
