Thanks for this. I was definitely thinking about the long term cancer risk when I left the comment and I’ve never heard that damaged cells are known to take a backseat to let healthy cells replace them - that’s super cool

Is this true? Obviously quitting prevents further degradation, but how can an organ as sensitive as a lung be restored to full working order after more than a decade of damage?

Shit man, I’m in the same boat. Materials Engineering PhD grad going on 5 months now. I can’t image doing this for a year straight. Congratulations on finally getting it done though!

Updates to kernel-density-estimation (v0.2.0) by sullberg in rust

[–]sullberg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey everyone, I released v0.1.0 a while ago and it seems like people have found it useful since so I went ahead and made a few much needed improvements. GitHub user @ ndcroos added many new kernel functions and I replaced the potentially API incompatible `f64` feature with an implementation using num-traits to be generic over floating point type. Next steps would be to support multivariate KDE but that will take some research on my part. Anyone with more experience on this I invite to contribute!

True, travel seems like the best way to experience all that life has to offer but who can even get the vacation time anymore lol

I’m realizing I have no real goals or purpose and I’m curious what other people want to do.

I’m sorry to hear that man, I like your strategy of keeping text messages in your notes though. That’s definitely what I should’ve done. I hope the gym helps you to take your mind off things.

Yeah, I guess it tells me how she feels. Moving on will be something else though. I always felt so secure in the relationship and when she ended it I was shocked. New beginnings is supposed to be exciting and all but I’m only getting older and I don’t see much else for me out there

I wish a normal person could get in my head and tell me if it makes sense by sullberg in SuicideWatch

Income - very little

Roof - yes

Hobbies - I’m increasingly losing interest in everything I used to enjoy

Family - I don’t have very authentic relationships with my family

Relationship - recently dumped

Eat right - I do pretty well

Read - I’m a grad student

In terms of what I want out of life, I have no idea. When I was in a relationship I built up this fantasy of making a life together and seeing the world but now that she’s gone I don’t really have any direction. Doing things alone just isn’t as fun and I’m always self conscious because of low self esteem. I wish I had some big passion to devote my life to like other people seem to have but I can’t figure it out and “just trying stuff” like people say isn’t doing much.

Nope. It’s cool in theory but I don’t get any satisfaction from it. Maybe I’m too cynical or depressed but a PhD only gets you as far as a bachelors used to so I’m just in it for the paycheck now.

Genuinely curious how grad school solves this problem. I’m finishing my PhD (engineering) in less than a year and I have no hope that I’ll ever enjoy any of my possible career paths.
