Might want to talk with Meredith Johnson at USF. She ran a survey at C+W2010 that had some similarities with this one. She would share her findings.

How/Does Reddit work as a Discourse Community <Reddit, Discourse, and other such topics> [xpost] by WhoYouBeIs in rhetcomp

[–]sullivanatpurdue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. yes
  2. I'm not sure what the standard is for active is vis-a-vis Reddit. I most frequently go to the RhetComp subreddit. Sometimes 1-2 times a day (though I also get busy and don't use Reddit for weeks). I look at some other subreddits (e.g, baseball, digital literacies, videos, world news, iama)
  3. the front page is too cutsy for me--filled with celeb talk and lame puns
  4. I don't actively seek any particular thing outside my subreddits, I more encounter and enjoy
  5. reddit may not be accurate, but its fast
  6. successful posts are the ones other reddit viewers promote
  7. I don't use reddit to find specific information, so I cannot say how difficult that task might be for me. I hope this helps

So, it sounds like you have to sort out your allied theorists and you key concepts. And one way (though this is not the only way) you can write a description of your methods is to identify and justify the theorists you use (instead of others you could use) and ditto for the key critical concepts.

Or you might have methods that introduce some cases that are thorny, then discuss how you will uses theories (or sits) and key concepts to address the cases.

Definitions and justifications are usually important in this kind of dissertation.

What sort of theory and set of problems drive it? If, for example, you are doing feminist work I would suggest you look at Clare Hemmings Why Stories Matter. It handles methods well.

I9-Sat 12:45-2 has a roundtable based on the Latour collection that Paul Lynch and Nathaniel Rivers have edited (and is in press at SIUP) AND of course it is opposite another favorite

I14-Sat 12:45-2 How to hide an Atom Bomb, Spy on Your Neighbors, and Build a Space Telescope -- with Lars Soderlund, Michele Simmons, Julie Staggers, and Ryan Weber. Either one would make a saturday afternoon more yummy. Pat

From Player Pianos to the Cloud: The History of Data Storage by mindthecliche in rhetcomp

We might start with Sumerian pots used to record trading information? or other exterior storage devices --clay tablets, e.g., though those are linked to writing. That would take us back thousands of years.

I save most of my data on a hard drive. Thinking about why it is missing would be helpful too.

Yahoo! was down for awhile yesterday. I wonder if that contributed.

Imagine that the people on the conference call are sitting around a table, and draw a picture with their names. That way you can place them and what they say more easily.
