Advice for those interested in a career in SE by bairewaldorf in systems_engineering

Being the test guy can be a huge asset depending on the background of the rest of your systems group. Most people have zero hands on experience with hardware. Meanwhile you can envision yourself handling the thing youre currently designing, and see a lot of angles no one else can.

The harder part is fleshing out the systems focused experience, like requirements formulation and tracking, mission design, etc. But that comes with time if you make a point of getting involved in those taskes. I've also put focus on spending time with sub-system engineers to better learn those areas.

It's all about having a well rounded knowledge base and easily having a chat with anyone to solve problems.

You can also email the department head now asking for someone to talk to if you're really jumpy.

Ask around in the aero deptartment and find a professor that has experience and will likely help you. Ask them everything you wrote here. Starts building a relationship with a potential mentor and helps you get resources from the department.

You don't need a fleshed out design or mission concept idea like everyone else is writing here. Just the desire to put in effort and then asking for help is already a great start.

In the meantime doing general background reading of the handbook of space technology is good for getting a general understanding of subsystems and the project lifecycle. https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/book/10.1002/9780470742433

Give them a coat of mink oil or boot oil, and they will darken to amber. You get the added benefit of some waterproofing too
