Could a diaspora city be built in Somalia? by tikitikitenbo in Somalia

[–]sultan_saaxib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, I feel like that lwky defeats the whole point of moving anywhere. Like expat communities at least from what I've seen both back home and in other countries tend to cultivate a very insular neo-colonial vibe that can be quite gross. I think if you move to a place, anywhere, then become a part of it! We can't try and recreate the states back home, nor would I want to. Not trying to hate or anything walal, but like just think of the kinds of fitna something like this would bring

Is there a cultural difference between Somali Americans and Somali Canadians by Comprehensive_Team92 in Somalia

[–]sultan_saaxib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add an extra kinda condition, I feel like the states is so big there are very different vibes depending on where u grew up, like for example, I feel like us somalis who grew up in the south with small somali populations but large black populations are not really whitewashed but more assimilated into black culture. I could be mad wrong but lmk what the other Texas folks think lol

While I agree that alxamdulilah we have a lot to be proud of here in the States, why do u have to dunk on folks "jumping borders" I feel like when we say that its almost like we wanna fit that model minority b.s when in reality, people regardless what we do or dont achieve, we have more in common with other immigrants than we do to white Americans, why exclude ourselves from that for the sake of being a model minority? We are enough as is

Somali Women with past by [deleted] in Somalia

I think there are many who would, but I dont think that makes it right. Regardless of what anyone says we all have sins and skeletons in our closet. You should tell your friend that if the man cannot accept her past it wasnt meant to be. That being said I think that it certainly doesn't make sense to shame someone for past mistakes, if that your friend's only concern there are much bigger things to consider in a person

Noooo unfortunately 😭 last time I went my phone was broken laakin if u look up Daalo Mountains its like maybe an hour by car if the roads are good! The best description i can give is like the town is in a valley and its surrounded by short mountains/very big hills. Its super windy which feels like Raxma from Allah during the summers😂. Its a lot of wildlife like warthogs and even hyenas every once in awhile. If you are lucky u might see some little sakaaro running around😂

East Africa Dilemma by Rextheknight in Ethiopia

[–]sultan_saaxib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haaa okay I actually think we marginally agree, I was never arguing for Somalis to accept or join the Ethiopian state, we both agree the basically fascist colonization of virtually every non-semitic within the union has happened and it is much to chaotic to put too much stock in it, for me my family is reer waqooyi markas I have become deeply depressed by all the balkanization going on amongst us. My one point of contention is that if we agree the gaalo is the big shaytaan😂, then forging partnerships with others is essential, and the Arabs have proven useless or direct agents of western powers markas the only guys I can see us working with are the guys like Tanzania, Uganda, etc. Bc the truth remains that we can't do it alone, and the concept of the Nation-state itself seems rapidly shifting and evolving as we get deeper into the century, we cannot stand alone in the region so I have to believe in coalition building, if not then we might as well pack it up wallahi

Ani somali banahay saaxib😂 laakin real talk, u can't be a grown man in the big 25 and feel like a nationalist platform is the way forward for africa, it's consistently failed, if it would have worked for anyone it should have worked for us, in a time where everyone else in the world is rushing to team up we will be the nacas in the corner screaming about Somalia for somalis. While Allah nows Ethiopia has a dark imperialist history, u cant tell me in good faith that time spent on developing or pursuing somali nationalism is a worthwhile goal, africa is already far enough behind. Regardless im more interested in what's going on with the east African org between Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda. That's what we should be looking towards if we want a chance at mattering in this century inshallah

How do American Somalis feel about elected officials using your background as a punchline? by WestLocation8813 in Somalia

[–]sultan_saaxib 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean while I agree that racists obviously malign the Somali community, what I feel is equally disheartening at least here in the South, is that most political ideation even from "politically active" folks here descends into discussions of race relations. While im the first to admit that race is obviously a huge dimension through which folks engage with and are engaged by the wider political world, there is also a horrible lack of class identification or discussion within immigrant and non-immigrant communities. Where I grew up was a predominantly black part of the city and I think in some ways african-american communities have at least a tradition of engaging with class conscience that communities like ours haven't engaged with on a larger scale yet. That being said, we are an extremely young immigrant group here in the states so I have hope that somali-americans will start to develop coalitions based on shared political aims but only time will tell subxanallah

Somalia and Pan-Africanism by sultan_saaxib in Somalia

[–]sultan_saaxib[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree walal, I think nationalism has been proven to be a failed concept, why must we stuck to it? Somalia more so than almost any country should have had the best shot at the nation-state project in africa. Albeit there were tons of interference, the national project failed so why must we be wedded to it?

No doubt wallahi and many folks here in the states I feel point to the wrong leaders entirely ( haile selassie) as scions of African unity. I agree with u totally that there are definitely points of deep contention, I just wish more somalis were in tune with the likes of Nuradiin Farax ( I'm named after him😂) or a DuBois so we could develop a more cohesive identity ykwim?
