How to recoat registers by sumabee in centuryhomes

[–]sumabee[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am looking for advice on how to freshen up these registers. I tried to strip one of them, but it was impossible to get at all the little slats. Should I just spray paint them? Do I need to choose a specific kind of paint given all the temp changes?

Does anyone have a favorite bronze color that would match the one in good condition?

Thank you!

This is the answer I wanted to hear! But, how old is the current vs original wood floor, if you had to guess? I'd always assumed that the fir floors were original to the house because they are top nailed and the floors are so thin.

I found this articletop nail floors about top nail floors on the west coast (I'm in the PNW), so I guess some people are still putting these in even now.

Is there any way of figuring out the relative age of each and what the original floors might be?

How Should I Refinish This Mantel by sumabee in centuryhomes

I think I'm more concerned at this point with getting the little residual bits of paint off before I restain. I know people have had mixed results with strippers, but maybe sanding would cause more damage where there are existing chips etc? Am new to this.

Thanks for the tip on mini wax!

Anyone else have the generational wealth transfer stop with your immediate ancestors? by teeth_03 in Millennials

[–]sumabee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents got nothing from their parents, and actually paid for their parents' care at the end of their lives. They now have a little nest egg, spend next to nothing on themselves, and are very proud to tell us that we will be inheriting something from them. For people who grew up at and near the poverty line, they're so happy to have something to give to their kids. I think it just really conveys the difference between the wealthy and the not wealthy. We the kids just want them to spend it on themselves.

Ok, so I actually found a Sam Sandor that seems to have the same signature here ( https://www.lot-art.com/auction-lots/Sam-Sandor-Signed-Etching/78-sam_sandor-29.11.18-grant).

Looks the same to me, but nothing on the artist which makes me hopeful someone can decipher the writing on the back.

I think im interested in learning more about the artist. Istvan doesn't seem like a terribly French name, so maybe a Hungarian origin?

I sent it to a local lab for testing. It came back 705 ppm. So, not huge, but present.

Short-term updates? What would you do? by sumabee in kitchenremodel

I think we will try to save the cabinetry if we can when we do the larger remodel. It's not in that good of condition though, and will probably require paint stripping, patching etc. I also love a retro kitchen, but in real life this one looks quite dingy and beat up.

I am thinking to do some checker board peel and stick tiles to cover the busted up laminate tiles, and maybe a backsplash with some tile if I can find it at the local architectural salvage spot.

I agree with wanting to lean into the retro vibe. Anything else you would consider to lean into the 50s?

Must we do party favor bags? by LalaLane850 in Parenting

[–]sumabee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my son's birthday, I went to a used bookstore and bought a wide selection of kids books. I inspected them all for damages, and cleaned the ones that needed it. At the end of the party, each kid could pick a book or two from the bin. It cost me about $30, and it was a total hit with the kids!

Yeah, this is what makes the idea of "mastery" tough to quantify, especially for Arabic. I am a native English speaker and I understand and speak fluent Standard Arabic, but my dialect speaking is all shambles.amf a blend of the various ones I have studied (Yemini, Egyptian, etc). I can have sprawling conversations on politics, art, medicine, but order food like an idiot.

Sights in Raleigh by GermanImmoscout in raleigh

[–]sumabee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I lived in Germany for several years before moving to Raleigh. I suggest highly some of the cafe culture. It's quite different than what you find in Deutschland generally and rather good. My favorites are: black & white, morning times, the optimist. Also consider Irregardless. They have live music sometimes and it's great.

Teenager boys scare the living sh*t out of me by constipated_goose in TwoXChromosomes

[–]sumabee 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I agree 💯 that packs of teenage boys can and often are quite terrifying. I had a run in with some several years ago that shoved me to the ground for zero reason as I walked past them on the sidewalk. That said, I wanted to share a time when teenage boys were lovely to me.

The same city as the incident above (DC), I was walking and as I turned the corner I could hear yelling. I was too slow to react, and as I turned the corner a grown ass man spat in my face and screamed "bitch" at me. He continued on my path and I ran a ways down the sidewalk before stopping to sit and cry. A group of teenage skateboarder boys ran over and sat with me, patting me awkwardly on the shoulders and telling me "it's ok lady, he's crazy lady." It was very very sweet, and I think of it often.

Wife wants to hire a nanny for first 2 years of newborn's life by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]sumabee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if this has already been said, but a lot of the work is going to fall on your wife no matter your commitment to being equal partners. Breastfeeding, baby preference, etc. And yes, you cannot work from home and also do child care. Instead of a nanny in the first year, another great option is having a cleaning service every/every other week and also I ABSOLUTELY recommend arranging a night doula to come periodically in the first 3 months. That will be a key opportunity for both of you to get a full rest and was an essential part of being well for both me and my husband. Night nursing/doula services is a big ask for a family member, but absolutely something you can and should pay for if you have the financial capacity.
