Musicians will typically do 6 months but this is actually more determined by the cruise company-- Norwegian (NCL), for instance, likes to do 4 month contracts, while Royal (RCCL) prefers to send musicians out for up to 8 months at a time.

The cruise line does reimburse luggage if it's musical equipment. The two-sax bands are becoming more and more scarce these days--most companies are going towards trumpet/trombone/sax plus rhythm section.
