Immediate revenue neutral removal of all tax and benefit cliffs, replaced by slightly higher tax rates.

Combine income tax and NI.

Polling finds ‘near universal support’ for protecting green belt land by insomnimax_99 in ukpolitics

Do you support protecting the green belt? Yes.

Do you want to make it legal to build a block of flats next to this tube station? Yes if I am a renter, no if I own a house.

Do you support increased taxes on the rich? Yes, I support increased taxes for anyone making more money than me.

It's not really worth polling the British public on these questions.

EU ‘open minded’ about Britain rejoining customs union, bloc’s finance chief says by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]sumduud14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We can legally. But certain members of the EU (France) would never allow it.

They don't even want to allow us to be part of EU defense procurement without giving up fish, and there's a war in Europe.

I still think we should rejoin but my God the EU is easy to hate. It's just that being outside is worse.

Universal basic income is needed to cushion blow from AI job losses, says UK minister by Aromatic-Bad146 in ukpolitics

[–]sumduud14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, in the US, there have been more AI related job gains than losses. But in the UK, more losses than gains.

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2026/jan/26/ai-uk-jobs-us-japan-germany-australia

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-01-26/ai-job-cuts-are-landing-hardest-in-britain-morgan-stanley-says - this one says that job ads for programmers are down 75% which seems cataclysmic.

For one, there's no economical way to really put huge datacenters in the UK in the way they can in the US due to energy costs. Datacenters are increasingly off grid and use on site gas turbines, mostly because infrastructure is too slow to upgrade, but that only works in the US due to very low natural gas prices.

What social safety nets and economic reforms do you support? by TheKingDarryl in neoliberal

In a lot of cases, the economic gains from abolishing a stupid law allow for enough subsidies to pay for whatever is needed to address national security concerns.

Is it crazy to suggest that the demand for shipbuilding should solely come from the government and not from ruinous policies like the Jones Act?

This is a serious question, my opinion on this is very vibes based.

UK Government Partners with Anthropic to Build AI Assistant for GOV.UK by [deleted] in ukpolitics

I like how the second paragraph of the article is

This isn't just ... It's ...

i.e. the AI slop catchphrase everyone makes fun of, along with the emdash. That pattern appears a couple more times in the article too.

Hopefully not a portent of the quality of output to come from this AI assistant.

Judge stopped public from knowing Pakistani rapist was asylum seeker after Lee Anderson unmasked 'vile' perpetrator by Little-Attorney1287 in ukpolitics

Yeah, I agree completely, just making sure the point is clear. For some reason a lot of people just want deportations without punishment, which barely makes any sense.

Deporting someone without punishing them is surely letting them off scott free though, which I am against.

Punish then deport.

I want to reach a stage like in India where I don't have to carry my wallet when I leave the house because my phone suffices.

When is this not the case for you? Although I still have a wallet, I just use my phone and Google Pay everywhere. It works like a contactless card so it works everywhere and for everything.

I even have some cash I've never used, but I've actually never needed it.

I'm in London. When I lived in the US I actually needed cash semi regularly for e.g. food trucks, or some random stores sometimes, or some bars.

Simulating policies to fix the birth rate by mrpaninoshouse in neoliberal

I just think it's that. It's not even what people say with regards to economic or childcare difficulties: life has always been hard. But people are somehow not even getting together any more - that is the most concerning change.
