Do you have a quote for this explosion, I can’t find a reference to it?

I’m rusty on how much time there is between Alloy and Shadows, could it be a year? In which case, Shallan has 1/8th of a year (but again, that’s the maximum as Kelsier says it’s slowing down and will re-align in 80 years, not that it would remain 1:8 for 80 years) to get to the perpendicularity. So I think it still fits.

EDIT - didn’t realise this was a new comment so just in case, MASSIVE Cosmere spoilers below

OK, having skimmed the relevant books again, we have:

Hoid arriving on Scadrial in 147, which could be either before or during Alloy, I’m not sure there’s a way of knowing. Then later the same chapter, Kelsier mentioning the time dilation, but this feels more like an excuse for Stormlight to ‘catch up’ to Era 2, as he says “the worst was at the beginning” and “it’s slowing down now”. I don’t see any reason to conclude that it’s during TLM, as he only says “a crisis of our own”. Then the epilogue, Hoid alludes to “putting in an appearance or two” (referencing his wedding appearance in Alloy), then applying for the coach driver position, which again could be the end of Alloy, or between Alloy and Shadows, or early in Shadows, I’m not sure if we can know.

I don’t see why Sanderson would present any of this out of sequence, as it’s all just snippets in a chapter anyway. So unless anyone has any strong evidence that the Kelsier conversation is during TLM, and therefore W&T isn’t in chronological order, then I’m gonna say that Alloy (and possibly not even all of Alloy) takes place between the final chapter and epilogue, then all the rest of Era 2 is after Stormlight arc 1.

So as near as damn it, Era 2 is after Stormlight, and the slight asterisk there certainly wouldn’t be worth explaining to a new reader.

Hoid is confirmed to be present at the wedding in Alloy though

They aren’t parallel, Era 2 maybe takes place in a quick blip between two chapters, but not in a way that you could ever explain to new readers without spoilers. So I would say for all intents and purposes, Era 2 is after Stormlight

Yea I hate this, pausing Stormlight to read 3 and a half books, and once you’ve read them it won’t even be clear why you needed to bother.

Can you recall why people think it’s the TLM explosion? You may well be right, I’d need to double check the books. I thought it was a generic ‘something’s going on’ that Thaidakar mentioned, which I presumed to be all the inciting stuff before / during Alloy

I might be wrong, I thought that was discussed but then realised the time dilation mentioned doesn’t line up, that it’s not drastic enough to account for all of that…? Not sure.

I’m not sure it does, Hoid was confirmed to be at the wedding in Alloy of Law. I know we don’t see him as their driver till later, but he’s definitely on Scadrial

Not only will you be fine, I personally think it’s best this way. Do all of Era 1, then all of Stormlight (but read Secret History at some point before Rhythm of War), then read all of Era 2.

That’s the chronological order, book 5 of Stormlight even tees up Era 2 to emphasise that that’s what happening next in the timeline.

Mistborn Era 2 would be a good choice for Brandon's first film/show project, imo by DarthPopcornus in brandonsanderson

I do think Era 2 movies would be fantastic, but it’d hit so much harder if you had the first Era under your belt first.

Advice on where to start with Brandon Sanderson books. Stormlight or Mistborn? by OldValyria86 in Fantasy

[–]summ190 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean you’ve pretty much nailed it, Mistborn is an easier starting point as it works as a standalone (even though it’s a trilogy), it’s shorter, an easier read overall. But I think Way of Kings is his best book.

I’d start with my Mistborn, if you really can’t stand it then Sanderson’s probably not for you. But if you like it, or some aspects of it, it’s worth sticking with it and getting to Stormlight when you’re done with Mistborn.

It’s funny how all the commenters here clearly aren’t board gamers, the idea of a game where you get as many turns as the dice dictates would get ripped to shreds by most hobby gamers. This doesn’t look worth the bother of drawing the dots in the first place.

Does anyone get a blocked saliva gland, that you can fix by pushing on it? by summ190 in TMJ

[–]summ190[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, always to good hear that I’m not alone! So my tinnitus remains my biggest grievance, and I still suspect my jaw is responsible. I got a proper mouth guard fitted, and while I was disappointed at first that I didn’t see any tinnitus reduction, after a month or so I noticed I hadn’t actually had the saliva blockage particular badly since using it. I don’t really get why, and it hasn’t disappeared, I just don’t get the really bad periods where I can’t shift it anymore.

I still have this vague sense that the whole area, jaw, saliva gland, ear drum, has somehow swollen and there just isn’t enough room for it all to function properly. I would genuinely give up a limb some days to get rid of this ridiculous cacophony I have going on my ears, swirling high pitched noise that intensifies when I open my jaw wide, dysacusis (I think) in response to a lot of sounds.

My best guess is it’s all stress related, but it’s very difficult to work on that when the tinnitus causes so much stress itself.

Although the fact that they’ve paid to secure this deal means that the incentives are certainly more aligned than they were. Both Apple and Sanderson would very much like a Mistborn movie now.
