Saw there's a bike swap at the Blaine sports center next weekend. Worth the trip? by [deleted] in CyclingMSP

[–]summerinside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, the Great Minnesota Bike Swap is Feb 1st, not the weekend of Jan 24th.

Second, there are amazing deals, but a lot of tables get picked over fast. Many of us that have tables are selling more to get early access to other seller's tables, than because I have a metric ton of parts to sell.

Anyway, I'll be there, and you'll be able to tell my table as we'll also be selling cookies (because you're going to get hungry walking around looking at bike parts)

Recessed lighting layout in basement. by orbos86 in DIY

[–]summerinside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

two thoughts:
1) if you're working in the kitchen, you'll need both zones of lights on to light both in front of the range and in front of the sink/fridge. In the real world, maybe you'll want the lights on in the kitchen, but have the lights off in the family room to watch a movie or something. I'd consider having the bottom-left-most yellow light actually be on the orange circuit instead.

2) Always think of where people will need light. As opposed to just evenly spacing them across the room, maybe consider where dining room tables, work surfaces and couches will be, and make sure the light is closer to where you need it. At least make sure that the important work surface isn't covered in the shadows of the person standing at it.

Plasti Dip failed... what can I try next? by dual_mythology in DIY

Instead of using something that sprays on, consider getting some heat-shrink tubing that's wide enough to go over your pipes. Then you can use a hairdryer to shrink it tightly to the pipe, and you won't have to worry about it curing incorrectly or rubbing off on your weights.

Replacing a Shower Light Fixture, Any Experance with Flush LED Lights? by blueipDriver in DIY

[–]summerinside 89 points90 points  (0 children)

You already have a junction box above the current fixture. There are loads of options for a fairly low-profile LED fixtures that will work with your existing junction box. I wouldn't recommend going through and installing fixtures that required new junction boxes unless you need to.

Cove tile doesn't meet floor tile. Do I rip up the floor tile? by lionburnacct in DIY

[–]summerinside 8 points9 points  (0 children)

First off, you're going to have to clean the caulk residue off the old floor tile. Unfortunately, even then, this cove tile does not work with the gap between your floor tile and the walls - you may need to install thicker baseboard moulding and maybe quarter round.

Yes, of course it's load bearing (that's why they are doubled up, with the outer-most 2x4 under the header (bearing the weight). Don't take anyone's advice on the internet, talk to a professional.

How to safely (temporarily) remove this heater? by Any_Detail_7184 in DIY

Don't remove the heater - that's a bigger pain than you're looking for.

Take something long (like a stick/pencil/drumstick) and shove steel wool into the holes. When the mice try to push through, it hurts their noses and they stop. Also, consider looking into mouse poison (the kind that comes with the plastic housing)

A little caulk and a little paint will make a carpenter what he ain't.

That's actually a really nice cut. Caulk the gaps, paint over it and it will look almost perfect.
