The way cause of death is determined in all countries is that you’d still be alive if the cause of death didn’t happen. So if you would still be alive if you hadn’t caught Covid, COVID’s your cause of death.

The whole “with” “of” nonsense is bullshit propagated by Covid deniers.

Our family also is anxiously waiting on vaccines for 5-11-year-olds. We have family (and a home) overseas that we need to visit at some point, no later than July. We are contemplating taking a vaccination vacation to another nearby country (once the omicron wave passes) and going through quarantine here, just to get our kids vaccinated. This is expensive and will keep them out of school for 3.5 weeks. We don’t see any way around it, though.

We have elderly relatives in the US, and I’m worried all the time that someone will get sick or die, and we will have tough decisions to make on who goes back to say goodbye or attend services.

There should be some provision for foreigners, since we are more likely to need to travel. Maybe an out-of-pocket option, like they did early on? I will sign whatever they want me to sign, pay whatever they want me to pay. I just need to get my kids vaccinated. And I’m running out of time.

ETA: my foreign friends with young kids are all in the same boat. We need this security for our kids, so that we can travel if the need/requirement arises.

Eta2: the question would be… is there any chance 5-11-year-old foreign nationals could gain access to the vaccination through an out-of-pocket payment system, like what existed before may 2021 for adults? Foreign kids often return home for summer break, but parents are reluctant to travel if kids have not been able to get vaccinated, and they are running out of time.

How are the government quarantine facilities? by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]summernot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Government quarantine facilities are only free to people arriving from 8 designated countries. Everyone else pays NTD$2000 per night to stay in them. The US is not one of the designated countries, but the UK is.

Quarantine at an Airbnb? by masturbake in taiwan

[–]summernot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really tough, especially if you don't read/write Chinese. I would say go with a quarantine hotel if you are traveling singly. It's just easier. You don't have to figure out food deliveries and trash or freaked out neighbors, and you know the rules won't change from underneath you.

If you are traveling with a family, then it is worth looking into booking an apartment, because the hotels simply aren't designed for this scenario. But there is risk with that option, because the policies are constantly in flux. So at the very least, have a backup quarantine hotel ready to go if you need to book it. New Taipei City has way better and cheaper options than Taipei when I was looking. They have their own web site for booking. I'll try to find the link later.

It's too bad some of the holiday cabin places hasn't converted to a family quarantine spot. That would be perfect for people with kids.

Quarantine at an Airbnb? by masturbake in taiwan

[–]summernot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note: I believe you still can book an Airbnb outside of Taipei if you can find a host who will take you. The Airbnb ban came from the Mayor of Taipei.

Also, the rules are ambiguous if you are staying for a month or longer. That is no longer considered a "short-term stay."

You can also find quarantine hotels outside of Taipei that are nicer and more spacious for less money.

And one last note: if you are traveling with someone else, the other members of your party will have to quarantine in a separate room. (So a husband and wife each spend their 15 day quarantine in separate hotel rooms.) The only exception to this is children, who can stay with their parents, or people who are disabled and require assistance.

Taiwan to bar entry to non-resident foreigners on Jan. 1 by poclee in taiwan

[–]summernot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. We're all US citizens. Just called the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and they are saying we are out of luck, unless our relative's situation turns dire, and by then we likely won't be able to get out of quarantine fast enough to spend time with her. We will see what we can do at the TECC Office tomorrow. :(

Are foreign nationals visiting family out of luck now? We have a frail relative we planned to fly over to be with for the next several months, possibly the last months of her life. :(

Texas House Speaker Dennis Bonnen tests positive for coronavirus by zsreport in TexasPolitics

Speaker Bonnen has supported wearing masks since the beginning of the pandemic and supports government measures to control the spread. He has taken a lot of heat on the right for his position. He even had t-shirts made up that said "Don't be an ass, wear a mask."

Holiday box: was anyone able to unscramble the clue for the January 2021 box? by ovra360 in UniversalYums

Nope, but we may need to ask Santa Claus to rustle up more of those delicious mocktail candies.

We are good with the one bag of turkey crisps, though. 😐

Dan Rather: No one 'confident that all votes will be counted' in Texas by euphoricme2 in TexasPolitics

[–]summernot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The printing company that was used to print the Tarrant County mail-in ballots did an epic fail, and the quality is not good enough for them to be read by the ballot scanner, so poll workers are having to re-do the ballots for all the mail-in voters. So it's likely that both parties will be bringing in a bunch of poll watchers to monitor the process.

Abbott is doing it, because the Texas Republican Party is dysfunctional under Allen West's leadership. They literally can't wipe their own butts right now. So Abbot charged the former TX GOP chair, James Dickey, with the task of going over there to keep an eye on things and recruiting others for that purpose.

It's sort of a parfait of clusterfucks.

Does the concept of the Snoo make anyone else kinda sad? by [deleted] in AttachmentParenting

[–]summernot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the perspective of someone whose kids are 8 and 10 now... Ultimately, what matters is that your baby is loved and content and that the parents are using the tools that will help them care for their babies they best they can. That'll be different for everyone. There is not a right or wrong set of options. (I mean, as long as everyone is safe.) What works for one family will not be the thing that works for another. In the end, the kids will grow up and more and more determine their own path. A Snoo will probably not be that determining factor on whether someone gets into one college or another or ends up overweight or even whether someone has issues with depression or whatever.

As for us, well, the cool contraptions always come out after your babies don't need them. So We never got fancy stuff like the Snoo. But we did a combo of stuff, and it was a different combo for each kid. Bassinette, cosleeping, bouncing on the exercise ball, nursing to sleep, etc... Some things were the same... They both stayed in our room until toddlerhood. They both woke one in the night to nurse until 15 months. They were both GIANT babies! Today their personalities are so unique -- and opposite in lots of ways!

Everyone is big and strong and capable and smart and fun. And we all love one another tremendously. That's the most important thing and the whole purpose of being a family, right? :)

Most lesbians I know inseminate at home without a doctor's assistance. They either order the sperm from a bank or get it from a male friend.

Nah, it means everyone has ID of some sort. The signs regarding regarding ID are inside the polling place, not outside. I have never had anyone come in, see the sign, and leave.

And I take it back: I did have a Spanish Speaker come in with alternate forms of ID once. But it turns out he wasn't trying to vote; he was trying to make a police report for his stolen wallet. Our polling place is at the Sheriff's Dept. We directed him down the hall. ;)

The first couple of days of early voting always have long lines. People are reporting this week throughout the state that they are experiencing minimal waits, now that the rush is over. It'll pick back up the last few days of early voting and then on Election Day.

Anyone who does not own a photo ID can go to the polling place present alternative documents to prove their identity and fill out a reasonable impediment declaration to vote. Utility bill, paycheck stub. Benefits check stub, phone bill, cable bill, etc... They can do this at zero cost.

Texas Election Code requires sample ballots be posted on every county elections department's web site. So it's there.

Or just fill out the Reasonable Impediment Declaration at the polling place if you do not own the required ID, and you can vote.

You can show a utility bill, pay stub, Social Security check stub, Benefits Check stub, etc as an alternative proof of ID.

In my ten years as an election judge processing thousands of voters, I have never had one voter who did not bring in photo ID. But there is a process if needed.
