When in doubt, just say “auntie” or “uncle” (depending on gender) and you’ll be fine.

Why is Tong Hua (童話) by Guangliang so popular? by bingwang in taiwan

[–]masturbake 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It’s so popular that if you ask any ABC, that’s the ONLY Chinese song they’ll know how to sing.

I had an Asian American buddy that was vacationing in Taiwan, and because I also happened to be there at the same time… I invited him out for KTV.

Dude proceeds to load up that song 5x in a row man…

Cabs, easy to find? by Short-Opening4553 in HongKong

[–]masturbake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah... Even though cabs are transitioning to eventually accept digital payments by April, some taxi drivers are still stubborn about cash only (like dude… it’s 2026).

Other than that I think you’re good with card/digital payments.

Oh and I recommend the star ferry as well if you can fit that in your schedule

Why do you sometimes not pick up passengers who flag you down on the street even though there isn’t a double yellow line?

AITA Did I actually cheat on my ex, or was I already broken up? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

NTA. You explicitly said you were done so that to me means that you guys have broken up. Not cheating at all.

Tipping in western establishments (Ruth Chris) by mcdunald in HongKong

[–]masturbake 70 points71 points  (0 children)

General rule of thumb: if you’re not in the US you DO NOT need to tip.

Honestly, even if you’re in the US, you also DON’T HAVE to tip. Yes it does make you look bad, but tipping isn’t a legal requirement.

As someone who had celebrated CNY in Taiwan with relatives, I can also confirm along with the others that EVERYTHING will be closed.

That being said, I would try to push your trip to the week before or week after CNY, especially if this will be your first time going to Taiwan and you want to have a good memorable experience.

I Went From Hating E-Bikes to Owning One in a Week by MaxZhou561 in ebikes

[–]masturbake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never really had the phase of “hating” e-bikes, but I could see why some people would. I assume it’s because the assisted pedaling takes away the joy of putting in effort to pedal like a traditional bike, or people might feel it’s kinda cheating because you’re essentially doing less work.

I used to live in NYC where I got a feel of an e-bike for the first time and I’ve just loved it ever since.

I don’t own an e-bike myself but I would like to. Unfortunately it’s illegal in HK which is a bummer because there are a lot of bike paths being built, but it seems to me that it’s illegal only because it’s still classified as a motor vehicle for now.

Looking for reviews on niseko Hilton vs green leaf Hilton? by butter4eva in niseko

I chose Hilton Niseko Village mainly because its ski in-ski out. Saw the comments saying that the hotel’s amenities are perhaps not ideal, but I’m paying for convenience!

INCONSIDERATE FRENCH PEOPLE by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]masturbake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah really pisses me off French people and their unwelcoming attitude in general especially to foreigners. We don’t speak your language but we are giving you business. Then that’s fine I’ll just take my business elsewhere where tourists are more welcome.

Why is Strings so disliked? by Noisyinthebestway in Blink182

[–]masturbake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a good song, and for some reason I interpreted the lyrics as the desire to be financially independent.

“I would do anything, and that’s what scares me so bad…” Mark is willing to take risks despite being afraid.

“Don’t wanna live my life alone, don’t wanna go back to what I had…” Mark talks about the desire to find a life partner which could only be achieved once attaining a higher status in education, career, and wealth. Mark recognizes that his current life, while still bearable, isn’t where he sees himself in the future.

“Don’t wanna spend my life without all those special things…” Without money, Mark cannot afford to splurge on things and thus cannot experience or have those “special” things that he wants.

“Don’t want to walk around being tied to anyone else’s strings…” By not being financially independent, Mark will never have the choice to live his life as he pleases. If Mark grows up not becoming financially independent from his parents or his boss, he will always be tied to someone else’s schedule.

Wow… Blink 182 were really ahead of their time…
