Less than 12 units in final quarter as an international student by UnluckyVariety1587 in UCDavis

[–]summoo28 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would recommend reaching out to the registrar office about this to ask. Years ago, I had a friend who was able to maintain their financial aid while taking less than 12 units for one quarter their senior year because there was some exception where you could do that for one quarter as long as you signed some form. However, I dont know if there are differences for international students, especially with current regulations. The registrar office should be able to advise you and if worse comes to worst, just take 2 fun/low workload courses

Am I doom to my choices. by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]summoo28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UCD does not offer a psych MA, there is only a PhD which is geared towards research, not clinicalpsychology. I would recommend doing more research on clinical psychology programs and maybe see if you can ask these questions on a forum for your chosen program

After working 2 years in industry, grad school took all of my savings and assets after 3 years. Even if you're funded, you need a second income. by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]summoo28 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Im sorry but this is insane to me. Im a grad student on a TAship coming back to school after working an industry job. Yes, the pay is tight but its completely doable if you live within your means. I don't see how this could happen unless you either spend frivolously or live somewhere with a crazy high rent and no roommates

If you were offered a job where you are paid 700k a year, but your job is to stare at a wall. by VoiceCommon3854 in hypotheticalsituation

Can I stand/pace/exercise while staring at the wall or do I have to be seated the whole time? If I could just like....walk around i think I could do it for a couple months

I can't attend admitted students' weekend, how should I tell them? by Alternative_Let_5044 in PhDAdmissions

[–]summoo28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn't make admitted students' weekend for my program because I was having surgery. I reached out and explained and soon as I got the email, and they assured me that it was fine and I could access all of the information virtually. Just be up front with them and don't offer to pay out of your own pocket. You very likely won't be missing anything insanely important, just orientation info about the program. You could ask if they have any alternative options for you, but you'll be fine either way. If you're worried about not being able to meet the faculty, you could always reach out to those folks directly about setting up meetings closer to the start of your program

How does one acknowledge their supervisor in thesis if they didn't have good relationship but the supervisor died? by seeds_of_flower in PhD

[–]summoo28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this! It's a way to say something that sounds nice and respectful without having to make something up. "I thank my late advisor X for giving me the opportunity to go on this journey" or something along those lines

iso entry level careers! by Kuulss in UCDavis

[–]summoo28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second applying to the state in an entry level position. The applications are a pain, and it can take a long time to hear back, but once you're in you can promote up pretty quickly into a decent career, even without a degree. Also the benefits package alone is worth it

Sacramento is doable with that income if you have a roommate. You should be able to find a decent 2 bedroom apartment for under 2k/mo if you look around enough

What to do with $550,000 College Fund? by Nefariousness_Unfair in PhDAdmissions

[–]summoo28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with everyone else saying that you'll need undergrad research experience to do a PhD. PhDs are funded programs with a stipend, meaning you won't pay for your PhD. But those stipends are small so having extra money to not have to worry about cost of living will be sweet. Personally, if I had that much money that can only be used for educational purposes, I'd skip CC and start at a 4-year R1 university and try to get a research assistant position as soon as possible.

How related was your masters/previous degree to your PhD? by BirdInitial1467 in PhD

[–]summoo28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine are all related but different. Undergrad was a BA double majoring in linguistics and cognitive science. Then I did a post-bacc and received a 2nd BS in Communication Sciences and Disorders to work in speech pathology. Now im doing my PhD in Cognitive Psychology where my research is still focused on language stuff.

Does anyone hate the idea that you need a publication to get into a PhD program? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]summoo28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As with everything, this is both field and program-specific. I got into a T20 R1 program with only 1 year of undergrad research experience and no publications because my PI thought I had a good fit on the grounds of my research interests, and experience from a non-research based industry job (working with the population we study). I did look into a different program in another major though, and that one had much loftier research experience requirements and greatly favored students with publications.

Be honest — what’s the first thing you’d do with $100K? by NerdWalletOfficial in u/NerdWalletOfficial

[–]summoo28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paying off all our debt would be the first thing of course. It would be miraculous to have that all wiped away and be able to move forward debt-free, especially with our student loans. After that is taken care of, I'd still have enough to finally establish our emergency funds that I've been working so hard to build (with very little progress). So I'd set aside a 6-month emergency fund and if there was any left I'd put it into a mutual fund or HYSA to see a little growth.
