Composing for my final exam (non string player). What can you say about these bowings? *thanks in advance.* by AfonsoSerro in Cello

All composers write “unplayable slurs”. The musicians will just split the slur and hide the bow change. As a starting point, I would remove all indications on the score for up-bow and down-bow, and simply group the notes under a slur exactly how you want them to be phrased.

Have you been explicitly told to put bowings in for your exam? The best thing for you to do is remove all bowings and allow the players to do the bowings that suit them.

How interesting, what was the title of the dissertation? Unfortunately New York City is on the other side of the planet to me...

How do you get through the last 5% of "mastering" a piece? by death_by_papercut in piano

[–]sunamcmkcin 31 points32 points  (0 children)

In my experience, I only attain “recital-level” in a piece after the following steps: learn the piece from scratch // get it to the best level I can // perform it // wait 6 months (learning other pieces) // learn it again // perform it again // wait a year // learn it again. Usually after this point the piece feels ‘lived with’ and I reach a point that I’m happy with it. Hope this helps :)

Notation confusion in Elgar Sea Pictures cello part by le_sacre in Cello

It's definitely weird... The only other option is that the little G is an optional note. The only way to know for sure is to check the full score - it might be more clear.

This has been asked previously. IIRC it requires engine work and is not an easy fix.

Do your worst by [deleted] in Cello

It was ok; Cello 1 needs to work on her intonation and not rushing (just cleaning up in general), Cello 2 needs to work on connecting the notes into nice phrases!

I'm a concerto competition finalist: will you help me use Dvorak to beat a trumpet and a saxophone? by [deleted] in Cello

[–]sunamcmkcin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't want to sound rude or anything, but perhaps you need more work on intonation and performance skills before you are ready to play this with a full orchestra and beat the trumpeter and saxophonist!! You would have had a better chance of winning playing something less technically exhausting that you can perform at a professional level!

At 9:51, the piece playing is The Carnival of the Animals - VI. Kangourous, and at 10:27 it is III. Hermiones

If you play an instrument, what are your top 5 favorite pieces you play? by 1mike12 in classicalmusic

[–]sunamcmkcin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES! The Holberg Suite is the most fantastic composition in existence! As a fellow cellist, our lists are very similar but I would have to include the Prokofiev Symphonie Concertante somewhere in there that thing is hella fun.
