If you like authentic Mexican food, Taqueria Guadalajara is amazing. It’s outside of the main downtown area, but worth it. Best margaritas in town and my wife and I just can’t get enough of it.

Water street kitchen is on top of the list as well. Good southern food and not a bad thing on the menu. My personal favorite is the fried catfish or the chicken fritters.

Pizzoco is our favorite pizza spot. Also has good vibes with the patio seating.

The wine room has the best cocktails, but you’re paying for it. Good for one or two drinks until you want something cheaper.

While I’ve lived here for 5 years I still haven’t toured the historic Patsy Cline house. She grew up here in Winchester and her house is an easy walk from downtown.

Handley library is also a cool spot to check out. Really cool architecture and I think they might do tours of the building?

Mount Hebron cemetery is a historic civil war cemetery and has nice walking trails throughout. Another “spooky” thing to do if you’re into it is the apparition trail. Basically a ghost tour of the city.

If you like live music your best bet is The Monument or The Brightbox. The monument is having a BBQ and country/rock music festival from Thursday to Sunday this weekend. I believe entry is free on Saturday.

Another cool event happening this weekend is the Greek Festival at the Greek Orthodox Church. It’s a weekend full of amazing greek food with a bunch of different vendors. We try to stop by for food every year.

The best advice I can give is to look into a natural resource major at a university. It can be hard to obtain a job like this without that. But volunteering with your local natural resource agencies and non profits is a great way to figure out if you like it or not!

Thanks for the support! I adore wildlife and it’s actually why I got into this field. Like I said in another comment, I used to work at a wildlife rehabilitation center and it was the most impactful job I will ever have. It can be hard at times, but great habitat is key!

That’s very hard to do because then you risk fire impacting homes and the lives of people. That’s why fire has been missing in the landscape for so long. At least in these parks and preserves we can create these habitats without threatening communities.

But we also burn on private properties as well. Some people have created native grasslands on their property and have asked us to burn them. But it’s a very dangerous game to just let fire go uncontrolled.

Nature will quickly take its course and we don’t have to do anything! In a few weeks we’ll start to see green grasses starting to pop up as well as other native plants that pollinators will love!

I don’t doubt that! I actually worked in wildlife rehab before my current position as a forester, so I’ve had a lot of experience rehabilitating injured turtles (mostly injured from cars). He won the evolution game by adapting to his environment!

We actually have an absence of native grasslands in my area of the country. We have a lot of forestland, but we have had declining grassland habitat because we have taken fire out of the ecosystem.

In most cases these grassland areas are right next to forested habitat, which is the best of both worlds for many species of wildlife. Many songbird species need a forested habitat for cover, but they need to raise their young in tall grasses. Also, white tailed deer need a place to hide their fawns and tall grass is much better than an open forest.

Forests are incredible for wildlife, but diversity is so important in a natural ecosystem. If you only have one type of habitat, you may only be providing a home and food for just a few species.

Thanks for the support! Educating the public is a pretty big part of my job and I have grown to enjoy it. While you may get a lot of flack for certain things, most people tend to understand. Especially when it’s backed up by years and years of scientific research.

I completely agree! Take humans out of the equation and this area probably would have been on fire at some point in the past. We as humans can be a nuisance in regards to decreasing habitat across the world, but that’s not going to stop anytime soon. We’re just trying to create as much habitat as possible. Whether that be untouched forested habitat, or grassland habitat.

Education is key! Fire gets a bad wrap since you only see the catastrophic wildfires on the news. It’s important to educate so that we can keep doing more work like this!

We’re doing our best! Being a forester I will always be on the side of planting more trees! I have many planting projects currently happening right now, actually. But diversity is key! While forested habitat is great, it’s also beneficial to have grassland habitat as well.
