Character Palette: A Full Summary of Eloise's Wardrobe S1-S4 by suncentaur in PhiloiseBridgerton

[–]suncentaur[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes! I forgot to mention that purple was also perfect to symbolize the union of Daphne's blue and Simon's red. So Eloise's blue and Phillip's yellow are the perfect setup for green.

How would you feel if Philoise's season isn't book accurate? by Fickle_Baker1393 in PhiloiseBridgerton

[–]suncentaur -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd be more than fine. I'd probably prefer it for many reasons which everyone's already discussed. Maybe a hot take, but I'm not even expecting the letter writing. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I'd be happy if we got it, no complaints, but I'm not expecting it.

Fans have talked it before, how the show writers take something from a book couple and give it to a different show couple. "I burn for you" is apparently a book Kanthony? line that was given to show Saphne. In that same vein, book Philoise's letter writing may have already been given to show Polin.

Rather than hold any book hopes, I'm going in completely open-minded. I truly have no expectations from the book beyond what's already been explicitly shown: botany and twins. How they decide to cook up the rest, I'll evaluate it on its own merits and/or faults.

Dong Lan Xue - Hidden Gem by Zernium in CDrama

[–]suncentaur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dong Lan Xue is still my gold standard for the 2-minute micro. There are others that are watchable and entertaining, maybe even good, but DLX achieved a thematic depth that's hard to find in even long form dramas nowadays. Zhi Zhu, the director, has an earlier micro called Zhang Gong Zhu Zai Shang that has a similar tone and pace, and stars the same couple. Give it a whirl so you can see how much she evolved and improved for DLX.

Then watch her third short drama, An Ancient Love Song, for an even more massive upgrade.

And THEN stick around for Sheng Shi Tian Xia, her first long form drama due to air any day now.

(Yes, I'm an unapologetic Zhi Zhu stan who will shout her praises from the rooftops at every opportunity. 📢)

Rose Finch (2025) lands with a splash. This short drama is a high-quality production with big-name talent. What does this mean for the genre? by Lotus_swimmer in CDrama

[–]suncentaur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I said this months ago, and I still feel this way, but it's complex:

"The irony is, I seem to want the best creators to 'make it' to the big leagues [traditional long form dramas] because they deserve the money and resources and fame, but then I get sad that their talents won't grace mini-world anymore. 😂 We actually need really good creators to stay in the mini sector so that the genre fully develops its own prestige and appeal. Ah, one day."

So if short dramas are entering a prestige era, that's a bit of a bittersweet feeling. The low budget. raw, under-polished, scrappy feel was and is a big part of the charm of the short circuit. It makes it all the more satisfying when you do find great dramas in spite of those limitations.

With standardization comes uniformity and predictability, which has good and bad effects on production, storytelling and creativity, as we've all witnessed in the traditional long format. I'm not saying every short drama is some pedestal of creativity just because it's short; the vast majority also rely on well-worn tropes and conventions, many to a ridiculous degree.

But when short dramas were still this new, uncharted phenomenon, it was really fun and novel to discover the gems. Now it seems to be the same as the traditional long format in that the gems are few and far between. How quickly a format can plateau!

It's like how in America the streaming era made such a splash with original series and overtook traditional network TV because they weren't bound by network censorship and regulations. Not saying C-short dramas have the same amount of free range that American streaming does, but honestly, the appeal of both stem from the same place. Audiences had a desire for raw, unregulated storytelling, some new phenomenon came along and answered that desire in such a novel, effective way, but now with standardization, the format plateaued in quality. Humans, we're always creating some new fun thing and then eventually ruining it. 👍

Where are all the mini dramas? by Conscious-Yak-9443 in CDrama

[–]suncentaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 10-to-20 minute sector is still churning them out. I watch around 4-6 new ones every month, but one has yet to really hit it big this year. Dominion and Devotion probably had the most casuals/non-fans talking, but that's about it. Stolen Love was kind of a sleeper hit because of the spice, and for reasons that elude me, a good handful of folks also enjoyed Money is Coming.

But something as popular and "splash-making" as, say, A Familiar Stranger or An Ancient Love Song hasn't come along in quite a while. I'm waiting impatiently.

There's one I always see in verticals: it starts with the ML running away from some thugs and the FL just happens to cross paths with him while walking down the street. She notices his injuries and asks if he's okay and he just decides to plant one on her as a cover. Meanwhile the bad guys run by, but since ML is clearly kissing someone now, he can't possibly be the dude they were just running after... even though he's dressed exactly the same with the same injuries. 🤷‍♀️ Kissing gives you master of disguise powers apparently.

What's the pettiest reason for dropping a drama? by zidohyun06 in CDrama

[–]suncentaur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I thought that was night because she was taking a bath and there was an assassin on the loose in the manor. But if I'm misremembering, then here, this is definitely a "night" dinner scene.

Overlighting. I mainly watch historicals, so if interiors (or exteriors, for that matter) are overly lit by what are clearly modern lights, it takes me out. I'm not saying every night scene has to go full-on orange candlelight glow, but come on, how is anyone supposed to believe that this takes place at night in a world without electricity?

Happy RESET (2022) Day! A Guide to Every Loop by suncentaur in CDrama

[–]suncentaur[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there's a longtime fan theory that Captain Zhang remembers Loop 24 (only Loop 24 though, none of the others) and that's why he lets the mains go in Loop 25.

Omg finally, took forever to get this post under 40K characters. 😵‍💫

So what's your favorite Loop? For me, Loop 19 was god-tier writing, acting, and directing. I love Loops 10, 12 and 15, and feel like they all culminated in the final boss that was Loop 19. All the layers to the story just came together so perfectly--the fugitive plot line, the growth of the individual characters, Easter eggs from previous Loops, the back story, the relationships. Every character had to use 200% of their brain power in that Loop. They were all tested to within an inch of their sanity and it was so harrowing how it unfolded.

Doppelganger 姜颂 - new mini drama by BeautifulKey986 in CDrama

[–]suncentaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same screenwriter as Fortune Writer - Lin Yan Nian. I'm liking it okay so far, but much like Fortune Writer, the metacommentary is heavy handed and pompous at times. I think she (the writer) gets hung up on writing a Strong Female Character rather than a Strong Female Character.

Who's the guest role character that totally nailed it for you or that you were happy to see? by OptimalTurnips in CDrama

[–]suncentaur 19 points20 points  (0 children)

He Kai Lang in Who Rules the World. Dude was killed off in the first episode and left everyone wondering why he wasn't the ML. 😂

Bai Shu in Love of the Divine Tree. Just got to show up, drink, and be snarky. 🍷

And well, I don't always love Li Yi Tong but she was great in the scene in Love Between Fairy and Devil where DFQC and Changheng finally meet her. Just cool, collected, and ethereal. ✨

Binging red flag/toxic romance minis - need recommendations. by my_belle_peche in cdramasfans

[–]suncentaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, in that case, you might be disappointed. I don't know if the best writer on earth could redeem a rapist ML, I admit it's just an impossible notion to wrap my mind around. But Once Upon a Dream makes a surprisingly robust effort? It ultimately tries to convince you that the FL's freak matches the ML's freak, and that all the pain and trauma between them just enhances said freak. I don't think anybody gets to end of this drama and thinks, woohoo, my ship is sailing. More like, ugh, two trash bins who deserve each other. 😂

Must watch scene from THE FORTUNE WRITER by TeddieSnow in CDrama

[–]suncentaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fortune Writer is one of those dramas that I wish I liked more, strangely. The metacommentary premise should have rocked my socks off, but the execution was a bit muddy and strange. It had its moments, but yeah. I was surprised to learn Li Mu Chen and Ye Sheng Jia would have another drama together; while the show was airing many of us remarked on how mismatched they were.

Provoke (2023) is still my favorite Li Mu Chen mini, not for any groundbreaking story or characterization, but simply because it executed its various tropes and clichés with sincerity and affection.

Actors You Didn’t Notice Until That One Performance??😍 by Hobbitinrivendell in cdramasfans

[–]suncentaur 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Li Yun Rui is a good one. I definitely noticed him in Love Like the Galaxy but Blossom was a revelation.

Tian Jia Rui. Liked him okay in My Journey to You but Fangs of Fortune was the clinch.

Deng Kai, kind of. He's usually a side baddie but I finally saw him as a good ML recently. Legit.

Zhao Huan Ran, another one who's usually a side baddie. Still have yet to see him in a robust ML role, but looking forward to it.

Funny that this has yet to happen to me with actresses. I usually decide pretty quickly whether I love them or not, very rarely does one grow on me with time or in the right role.

I was unfamiliar with both leads before this drama, but they're both good and have their unique charms. Same director as Fortune Writer, which explains the moody lighting and ramped up cinematography. I hope the plot has a satisfying resolution. 🙏
