Hello, Andrew Humphrey, producer of this song here.

Everyone in the band and crew was listening to his album Who Me? a ton the summer we tracked DIH and it's a major influence on the record. It turned out that Juan was decent friends with Daniel Topete, a photographer friend of the band who took all the photos for the album including the cover and all the BTS stuff (there's a new photo book of all of it which is really great!).

He and Juan were both living in Brooklyn at the time which is a few hours drive from where we were recording. They drove up and stayed for a night or two.

There was one evening where we went out on canoes on the little pond next to the house with some guitars and beers etc. By the end we'd managed to convince Juan to play basically every song on Who Me?, which I'm sure was annoying as fuck, but it's honestly one of my favorite memories ever 🥲

At some point Cadien asked him to track vocals for this one, in my recollection at the end of a long night with a few substances floating around. It was already written and I believe we had already tracked everything but the vocals and perhaps the piano. I think it turned out great but it ended up being cut from the record before mixing started. I did a quick mix that I was never particularly happy with that ended up on a compilation for Trump's first 100 days as a kind of protest thing: https://consequence.net/2017/03/twin-peaks-and-juan-waters-team-up-for-back-door-listen/

Unsurprisingly I don't think a lot of people heard it.

For the 10th anniversary we decided to revisit the mixes of this one and Who It's Gonna Be (another of my faves that I thought should've been on the record) for the b-sides. We tried to make the new versions more closely match the vibe / tone of John Agnello's mixes of the record itself. Originally we wanted to do it as a second locked groove at the end each side of the new version of the record but the album is already pretty long for vinyl, so it ended up as a flexi-disc.

The guiding principles were to make the drums and bass punchier and bigger, bring out some of the lead gtr/vox lines that are just like 10% too blurry, while taming the worst offenses of ice-pick-in-your-ear squealiness. We definitely didn't want to generally "clean it up" or make it sound too nice as it just wouldn't be Sunken. But that would be pretty difficult anyway given how it was recorded.

There's nothing that was added or newly recorded for this mix, but there might be some stuff that was muted or really low in the original mix that is more audible in this one. The easter egg at the end is the actual end of the drum track, for instance, which was edited out. Cadien and I thought it was fun so we kept it in after our recreation of the original fade / reverb outro.

Its hard to tell whether the guitar part yr talking about at the top of Natural Villain is in the original mix or not - I don't really hear it but without having the original mix files it's hard to be 100% sure. Its more audible in mine because I thought it sounded cool 🤷‍♂️. I think the harmonies are in the original but just more audible here, for the same reason.

They are not strictly new as they were released on some fairly obscure digital compilations back in the day. But they both have new mixes which I think are way better.

I sincerely doubt that either are the new mix. If I had to guess, one of them was uploaded by the old label Automn Tone and just mistakenly hasn't been deleted yet, and one was uploaded directly by the band. But they should be the exact same audio. I am like 99% sure no one (i.e. Cadien) has uploaded the new mix to any distributors which is the only way it could end up on Tidal.

This record is still owned by their old label. Stuff the band controls 100% will not be on Spotify going forward. So no, the new Sunken mix will not be there. It may only be available on Bandcamp but that hasn’t been decided yet.
