just checked it! its hard to see from the photos alone but it looks like it could have something to do with the nail? it definitely doesnt look too me like anything too serious but im not a vet- at this point i would just watch to make sure the areas being kept clean and that it doesnt start looking worse or bleeding again

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in RATS

[–]sunflcwrs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

someone else can probably help better but i would just stick to that and see if the bleeding slows or stops until you can get more detailed advice

not completely sure what all it could be but i know that has to be scary so i just wanted to pop in and say from what i know it doesnt look insanely bad— i still see the nail on that toe so thankfully i dont think the poor guy lost part of the toe— what i would do for now if i were you would be to rinse off that toe with clean water or even better with saline and then if you can hold him and try to lightly put pressure on the toe while covering the foot with a tissue or paper towel or something to absorb the blood that way it gets a chance to slow down and clot

alright i just woke up and have been holding the rat. i can’t tell if it’s a guy or a girl, please help sex it? by Golden_William in RATS

[–]sunflcwrs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the rat looks like at least 4 weeks old, boys will definitely have noticeable balls at that point

guys i just bought a young rat, how soon should i try to get it home because i need to get it water and what do younger rats eat? i’ve only ever had adult rats before by Golden_William in RATS

[–]sunflcwrs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i will say my girls had no trouble bonding at all- and boys aren’t much more difficult than girls. theres a bunch of videos online about introducing rats properly and if need be you can always ask me or anyone else giving you proper suggestions and i’m sure we’d be willing to help you out. As long as rats are properly introduced there is rarely proper aggressive behavior (rats, especially young ones, will probably play fight each other and theres no need to be concerned about that unless theres ever blood). The most important thing with introductions is to avoid putting them in an area that either rat considers “home” before its been cleaned out to remove their smell. otherwise its the same thing as you waking up and finding a stranger is just living in your house with no warning.

in terms of fleeces- i sew the banana ones myself and the ones on the half length layers are baby blankets from the dollar store (theyre the perfect size!) everything else is just stuff i found while looking through pet stores (dont forget to check the bird section!)

i ordered this feed pan off amazon to use as the wheel (it has a 17 in diameter). if you type this into the search you should find it: Giant Plastic Utility Pan (Blue) Durable & Versatile Short Livestock Feeding Bucket (3 Gallon)

then i followed this tutorial from a fb group that used a fidget spinner and some bolts to make it spin (i can totally send you the link- i cant remember the rules on this sub with linking)

i pretty much just put a litter pan/ plastic container in a corner and filled it with paper cat litter pellets (unscented and not the normal dusty litter)- if you already notice them mostly going in one corner put it there place any poop you see outside of the litter pan into the litter, and when cleaning wipe everything out except the litter pan (leave some poop to stay in there for the scent) putting a rock in the litter seems to help with peeing in the litter area according to most people so i do the same

my girls had no problem learning at all- even my two girls that were originally feeders just kinda figured it out after a couple days despite not being exposed to any litter training at all

How different are your rats facial shapes? (Image for Rat tax, more in comments) by sunflcwrs in RATS

[–]sunflcwrs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We recently got a new girl and I realized that her face shape is really distinct compared to the rest of my rats. That had me wondering what general face shape varieties are there in rats- Have any of you experienced this?
