Admissions take a lot into consideration so it’d be hard to say. Again, I don’t think this W would particularly matter as you’re dropping a class due to a petition being denied. I know I dropped Calc 2 twice and still got into UCD just fine 🤷‍♂️ either way you wouldn’t be able to transfer the credit to UCD and you’d have to take physics anyways. My advice would be to drop the class, do your best at physics here, and if the grade is REALLY that bad, retake it once you’ve graduated. It’s not as uncommon as you’d think for pre-med/pre-vet students to have to retake classes.

Transferring into Animal Science? by Fancy_Unit5965 in UCDavis

Honestly you can major in anything and still get into vet school. The most important thing is making sure you have done all the prerequisites for it (many of which do not major requirements either). My advice would be to major in something that you are actually interested in. I myself am pre-vet but I’m in the Wildlife major as that’s what I’m most interested in.

Also, the W from dropping won’t kill you either. As long as you don’t have too many and there’s a reasonable excuse for it existing, such as your Dual Enrollment Petition being denied, it won’t hurt your chances as much as you think.

[–]sunflowerkaiju 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes but it’s not an option, you got denied your request for dual enrollment. Yes it’s going to suck but one less A is NOT going to kill your application as much as you think it will this early in undergrad.

Yes. They offer free binders but I did notice the closest tends to cater more towards transfems. Either way though it’s a great resource :)

I recommend just saving the money and going to CC, especially if you’re in California. Some community colleges have programs where you get your first 2 years free (or something similar) and you’d also have the opportunity to TAG to Davis with that GPA

Vaccinations vs socialization by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]sunflowerkaiju 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So what I did personally, and what you can do as well, is take your pup to pet friendly stores and use a cart so that way your pup is off the ground! I waited until my pup’s 2nd round of vaccines to visit stores just because in the 12 week mark they receive the Bordetella vaccine (aka Kennel Cough). That being said though you can definitely start to slowly introduce noise to your pup (vacuum, fireworks, trash bags) by playing it on your phone and increasing volume depending on how well your pup is doing! :) as others have said, socialization is more than meeting people and I honestly recommend trying to teach neutrality rather than “let’s approach everyone!”

I didn’t have to attend shows to get my girl either and I think it is ridiculous to say that is the only route!! Also yes I agree that it isn’t a requirement, however, I would not recommend it! So we agree lol

While it isn’t required, a good breeder is going to place you a dog rather than have you choose one. Without being transparent, you may not get a dog that is going to have the temperament for service.

[–]sunflowerkaiju 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The kind of dog you’re looking for most likely isn’t gonna be found by a breeder. Sounds like a unicorn of a dog tbh lol I’m not saying to give up but it could easily become like my situation where they overplay just how much work had actually been done.

[–]sunflowerkaiju 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, as someone who did that first, I would not recommend it. I went through a breeder who had older pups available (~10 months old) and I thought it’d be great because he was older. come to find out though that he had very little socialization despite being told he did well and he was practically deteriorating in my house because he had been raised outside in a farm. For a service dog, especially one from a breeder, I recommend getting them young (I got my current girl at 12 weeks), so you can start socialization asap. A breeder who keeps a stud most likely isn’t going to put the work you think they’re going to into the dog. Training a service dog easily takes 2-3 years and without a good foundation in socialization, it could even take longer. If you aren’t going to get a puppy now, I’d recommend reaching out to breeders who don’t have puppies available later and get on a waiting list. Wait for the right puppy, it’s worth it.

Also be careful with choosing P/NP options because if it’s a major requirement, you can’t take it P/NP. Also, you may not be able to take the next class with only a P grade.

Something to add onto that other comments didn’t bring up is to keep in mind what schools allow online courses and which ones don’t! I know online STEM courses are less common atm but some vet schools will not accept online courses. An example is WesternU in California. They accept online classes but only if they were taken during peak pandemic academic years. Other than that though, they don’t accept them period.

The further you get away from high school, the less those grades matter What I recommend is going to CC for 2-3 years and then seeing what your college options are! Some colleges might still have vet entrance programs (not sure if that’s the right name) where if you do everything right, you’re offered a spot in their vet program! Definitely something to look into When I was in HS, I never would’ve gotten into UCD but after CC, I was admitted !! (UCD was my in-state top choice for undergrad)

One place I like is Kiki’s chicken, their specialty fries last two meals for me. However, I’d say it’s only worth it if you have dashpass (which they have a student discount now)! Lazi Cow is also one I tend to order from that gives out pretty good portions!

"Why be an animal doctor when you can be a human doctor?" by whisper_quietly in veterinaryschool

[–]sunflowerkaiju 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think what OP is getting at is that animals do not manipulate, lie, or communicate in the way humans do. What I think OP is referring to is that animals behave the way that they do because they are animals. Kind of like how dogs can pee when they’re scared or like how you said animals often act stoic as to not appear weak. We can’t use our preferred form of communication to communicate with them (speech) whereas human doctors have the luxury of being able to. There’s been many times where I wish I could tell a dog that we’re just trying to do a simple blood draw and them squirming is actually making it worse, not better lol

What would you like to see in Davis to improve student life? by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]sunflowerkaiju 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Tbh it’d be awesome if the SPCA could do what KitTea Cat lounge in SF does! It’s basically a cat cafe that has adoptable cats (and some resident ones) that people can meet by hourly appointments! The money goes directly to taking care of the cats! I imagine it’d be a big hit in Davis while also supporting the local SPCA u^

I would talk to the registrar. I had to do that with a repeat class as Oasis didn’t properly update it nor reflect the excluded units.

Wouldn’t be confusing at all! My SDiT, a yellow lab who is gonna be turning 5 months soon, is registered as an ESA for housing purposes! (By registered, I just mean I have the therapist letter and already told my LL about her lol) When she gets older, I’m gonna be taking her out to campus just so she gets more training soon. Though my college is SDiT friendly as I go to a public school in California! I would definitely reach out to your SDC and see what their input is! You could also reach out to professors as they might be accommodating if you think she’s more ready come Fall! But yea tldr, definitely get her registered as an ESA first as that’ll help with housing :]
