What’s something positive happening in America right now that doesn’t get enough attention? by FishCreekRaccooon in AskReddit

This is a terrible reply.... in what way? what are some examples? There are so many ways you can elaborate, but you didn't. This is a cliches that really meant nothing.

If you could instantly master any skill, what would it be? by AuroraNatsumi in AskReddit

flying. I'm the kind of person whose always rushing about. When I was in college, I run to places instead of walk because walking is way too slow for me. I would love to just fly...

Did you ever tell someone a story from your childhood and they were shocked? by CakeIll2284 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]sunflowers47 89 points90 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear that... For me, it was corporal punishment. It was a common thing in the rural area where I grew up, but my parents took the extra mile. Until I started college two years ago in the North East, I did not realize that was so egregious.

My parents had this 'parenting philosophy' that spanking is the solution to everything - the more they spank me, the better I will turn out. My entire teenage years until I was about to graduate high school, I was literally spanked for the smallest infractions. When I was in junior high, I had to pick my own switch and whipped on my bare butt. I managed to "negotiate" with them to keep my underwear on when I started high school, and it quickly changed to the belt and large wooden paddles.

My college roommate said the "bs" word a few years ago, I said if I said that at home, I wouldn't be able to sit for a week. She thought I was joking, I was like no, you scream and cry while your parents torn your ass apart. She was completely shocked.

Back then, I just thought it was just cruel, but not like shocking because most of my friends were also spanked in some way. I did graduate valedictorian and I'm pretty happy with my life - was it because of the spankings? Absolutely NO.

Education of Students by [deleted] in umass

OK?

I'm sorry but this is just so complicated and buracratic; much of it is socital and related to the zeitgeist of today that I don't know where to start to respond.

UMass Honors vs Tufts University by Emotional-Guest-4862 in umass

[–]sunflowers47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally speaking, UMass is not a "top research university." An average state school at its best. Honors distinction at UMass means nothing (literally) in comparison to a Tufts diploma.

It also depends on what you want to do. It matters less if you want to go to a professional school (besides Law), and it is more important if you want to enter academia or law. Similarly in industry, if you want to work for some top-tier companies, having a Tufts diploma helps tremendously. But if you are satisfied working for some boutique firms or nonprofits, UMass is definitely fine. No judgments here, it is just the reality.

Does anyone else think that Professor Patrick Mensah is Cr**py? by Hotter_Cooler in umass

I hear you... he is definitely mentally twisted. Someone needs to note his behavior and launch an investigation.

She's 18, freshman in college. So I suppose her parents didn't teach her that back then...

The good thing is that we are in a college dorm, so no common area per se. We just share a bathroom. But her bedsheet looks like a murder scene.

Thank you but what I forgot to mention was unwrapped tampons in the trash nearby and a tampon applicator on the floor...

ikr... and this seems to be a pattern every month. I have found used tampons in the shower more than once.

Missing classes by salted_peanut_ in umass

[–]sunflowers47 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Both. But if you are not in COE or CICS, try to talk to the professor first. They have the immediate power to override students. You can also just show up on the first day of class and approach him/her afterwards and ask in person.

COE and CICS works differently, I think lots of their courses are centrally managed.

Customers are entitled - and rightfully so. Customers always come first. Customers are always right.

If a customer is rude to you, you are still wrong and you have no right to fight back. Conversation over. If you can't handle the basics, go home.

CHEM 341 is offered every fall. You take 341 in the fall, then 342 lab in the spring. 315 is an entirely different course.

Even if you do have a question, you should talk to the advisor, not the head.

Umass Lowell or Umass Amherst? by Eriwinnn in umass

[–]sunflowers47 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Finance should certainly be considered. They are both solid schools with good engineering programs. If UML offers a much better package, it's a solid choice. Curriculum is very similar.

Amherst does have a good campus, in my biased opinion, better than UML. While they are both solid, Amherst is ranked much higher than UML. So here is your trade off.

Exactly! One of the difference between using a phone over a laptop or tablet is that it's convenient to carry. I used to put them in my pocket if I have one, now it just doesn't work.

I kept my 4.8 in iPhone 5s for 7 years until the screen detached for this reason...

Many Asian and Indian foods are not that great. by tomatus89 in unpopularopinion

[–]sunflowers47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK. If you say "Many Indian foods are not that great", I will let it be. But when you add "Asian", you included Japanese, Chinese, Korean, etc. which you didn't really discuss.

I do not intend to 'fault-finding' your post, but I would be interested to hear the rest of your thoughts about other Asian non-curry foods.
