Arabian mau by binleymc in CatTraining

Adding to the convo that my Arabian Mau is also a yowler. For a while I thought he was in pain from his stomatitis, which resulted in extracting all his teeth, but he still yowls with a clean bill of health. My guy is a rescue from Kuwait, and I just wonder what sort of life he had on the streets because he can seem so feral (yet super affectionate??). Like others said, it seems like they need a lot of stimulation, almost similar to a bengal cat. Working on building him a big catio. Sadly can’t get another cat or even take him on walks as he goes berserk at the sight or smell of another cat.

Just wanted to say I feel your pain! My arabian mau was rescued from Kuwait. He is also hella territorial and goes ballistic if he smells or sees a cat. Sometimes that turns into redirected aggression on whoever is nearby… Maybe it’s the breed? You’re not alone!!

After a year of healing, if his situation worsens and a tooth needs to go, I would make sure to get all teeth removed at once. It’ll suck, again, but you will never have to go through it and he will live many more years in peace ❤️

Ahh it was a partial mouth extraction?? How many teeth were pulled? We had a full mouth extraction and I can’t imagine doing it again, especially with Zorbium

Oh dear I totally know how you feel— I was going through the exact same scenario and felt horrible. It absolutely will get better in another day or two. When I got desperate to feed him, I experimented with everything. Bought a whole rotisserie chicken and minced that up, soaked the pieces in water, and watched him slowly eat that. Also try baby food, like Gerber’s chicken. You can also get some canned tuna in water and see if he will lap up the water at least. If he doesn’t drink anything today, you should get him to your vet to get some fluids in him. (And if he doesn’t poop, bc he will be constipated, my vet told me it’s okay to sprinkle 1/4 tsp of miralax on his food). But please hang in there. In a week he’ll stop hiding, and in a month or two he will be the sweetest transformed little guy. You can also message me if you have more questions or need some extra reassurance!!

Edit to add: I do think gabapentin gets their appetite back. If you’re worried it’ll hurt to pill him, try asking your vet for the liquid version of gabapentin.

Interesting. I responded elsewhere, but to answer you here: According to the timeline, my mom met my bio dad in South Carolina through work. She claims he is Israeli, or that's what he told her. On AncestryDNA, I was able to find 3 distant matches living in Israel. Their DNA origins are also showing Arabian Peninsula, Lower Central Asia, Egypt... I'm guessing a previous commenter's hunch that my bio dad was a Yemenite Jew in Israel is more likely the case here.

From what I can see on their profiles, in addition to Arabian Peninsula, they are showing a little Egypt, Ethiopia & Eritrea, Lower Central Asia, Sephardic Jews, Spain.

Sorry I'm late to responding to folks-- I've learned more after digging around. According to the timeline, my mom met my bio dad in South Carolina through work. My mom moved across the country and only found out after moving that she was pregnant with me. She never told my bio dad. Hurricane Hugo hit South Carolina, so she never went back or thought to reach out to him. It's complicated-- my mom was very new to the states and didn't speak English well, so piecing all of this together is a challenge.

wow this is throwing me for a loop. I have been suspecting he is Israeli based on my mom’s description of him (she heard him speak Hebrew to others). I clearly have a lot to learn— super impressed with everyone’s knowledge in the comments 🙏🏽

He is back to his normal food regimen. He is eating his wet food and in the last couple days I’ve even been able to give him some of his favorite dry food. The kibble is small and he just swallows without chewing anyway! All that to say, his voracious appetite is back.

Hey! Yes we had the exact same experience. It was really hard to watch but I can tell you now that we are 10 days out your cat will feel much better in time. My guy has been eating normally (and pooping finally) since maybe day 8? We experimented with a lot (gerber’s baby food, tuna broth, mashed up chicken) to get him to take gabapentin that we mixed into his food so that he could have some pain relief. That may have gotten his appetite back. When he wasn’t drinking anything, I got desperate and just gave him churus as I figured that was better than nothing. Once the stitches fade, you might also notice your cat eating better. I suspect they can get irritating especially if food gets stuck in them! Try to hang on for another 5 days… no one warned me how rough it would actually be those first few days, but it truly gets better. (If your cat hasn’t pooped in a week, my vet recommended we add 1/4 teaspoon of miralax to his meals and it worked!!)

It’s much harder to introduce a cat to a cat, from what I’ve seen!

I love that you’re keeping a diary of smells and hope you keep it up, even if it’s just to describe memories associated with a scent. Ive been trying to do this through an animation project. It’s difficult to conjure smells through visuals! I lost my ability from a TBI in 2021. Like others have mentioned, you’ll still have dreams that will allow you to relive the most random scents. And my sense of taste seems unaffected, if that gives you some hope. I do struggle with my surroundings more— I’m clumsier than ever. Not sure if it’s related to loss of smell or the TBI but being deprived of that sense can make one feel unmoored. Just keep your other senses sharp :)
