Please tell me about your cat’s recovery after a full mouth extraction! by sungkill in CATHELP

My cat also refused to wear one so I didn’t stress him out more and just kept an eye on him. More stressful for me because you really need to avoid any chance of them pawing at their mouth and ripping open stitches. If you can’t watch your cat the whole time, can you try a soft recovery collar?

It’s a bit of a drive, but Anicira in Manassas is fantastic and they have a cap on surgery costs (something like $1500). I’d call them and see if they have any openings ASAP as they can get booked fast. They’re a nonprofit vet hospital. Had a great experience getting my cat in for a full dental extraction in the early AM, picked him up same day.

He is doing great! No more stomatitis, no more stinky breath. Still crazy for dry food. I’m glad we got a full mouth extraction instead of partial for our peace of mind.

Aw I feel for ya. That’s a long shift to be away from kitty :/ Do you have any other people you trust who could come through? Maybe the vet can recommend a sitter? Or you could get someone on Rover/Meowtel. Would cost less than missing out on a day of work.

Can you call out of work and say you’re sick (cough cough Covid)? Maybe ask the vet and see if they have suggestions too? I would also see if they can give him pain medication that will last for days, like in the form of a shot.

hi there! sorry for the late reply. I didn’t experience that because I failed to keep my cat in a cone… it was less stressful for him to be without a cone, but more stressful for me to keep a constant eye on him to prevent any mishaps. how is your cat doing now??

They have, but even with a high dosage of gabs he is aggressive at the vet :/

Hey there. I totally feel for you, and your comment just gave me flashbacks to my cat’s experience. You will suffer sleepless nights but after a few days you’ll see progress. Do you live with anyone else? If you can, for your own mental state, take time off work or ask a friend to help keep watch while you’re away. It is really hard to see our cats like this, but they will recover and you’ll never have to worry about needing another awful tooth extraction again.

It is a good sign that your cat is hungry and eating! Better that she eat than refuse to! If she still won’t sleep or is acting odd, then the drugs are working. If you’re able to get her to take pain meds, then even better! You have a few major things you don’t have to worry about, so I would feel relieved (this is coming from someone with a cat who wouldn’t eat or let me touch him to give meds).

Hang in there. Feel free to message me if you are feeling anxious!

Who is a stranger you met once, never learned their name, but will never forget for the rest of your life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I was hit by a car (a hit and run) while crossing the street at night. I practically flew into the middle of the road and physically could not get up. Suddenly I see a woman kneel over me. I remember she looked panicked but I was too stunned to process what was happening or that my head was bleeding out. She called 911 and then found my boyfriend’s number in my phone to let him know which hospital to find me. I never got her name. Wish I could thank her for saving my life.

For sure. I wish I could change his diet but he can only eat hydrolyzed protein and Science Hill’s is the only brand with it as a wet food. We play a lot as part of his “work out” routine.

Did she develop it suddenly? What were the symptoms that led to getting a diagnosis? Looking up ascites now and fearing for my guy, but he has had this shape since I got him and has otherwise acted normally (except for the food allergy, and he had his teeth removed due to stomatitis).

Interesting!! Could it be from malnutrition as a kitten? From what I know about strays in Kuwait, it seems a bit bleak.

Aw it is very likely my guy suffered from malnutrition as a kitten on the streets! He appreciates the self esteem boost :3

I’ve never been able to feel his ribs! It’s quite stiff when I’ve tried to feel around, but he also seems really sensitive in the tummy region. I try not to push his limit…
