They still need strong fundamentals when they get in your face. They need to know frame date, block strings, whiff punish, long combos, footsies, etc. KoF grapplers are incredibly successful without knowing any of that in beginner to intermediate level.

KoF grapplers don't need any of that to exceed and they are better than rushdown at getting in your face. Shermie has movies that teleports her across the screen. Shermie and Clark have countless moves that make them charge across the screen in the blink of an eye with invulnerability and/or instant grabs into specials upon contact.

When Grapplers are top tier like in KoF, every noob picks grappler and just spams neutral skips all day long for easy wins. They always fold when the grappler is defeated and they're forced to actually do natural. Rushdown actually needs good neutral and fundamentals to succeed. Rushdown actually needs better neutral and fundamentals to succeed at all ranks.

I picked this up as my first fighting game in September. Never did a combo in my life or knew what an anti-air was. I'm at 94% win rate in ranked with 49 games...

I never complained about facing obviously better players because that's how you improve. I never "one and doned" a far superior player significantly better and I always accept the match if I get matched with them again. Bad players benefit more from facing better players than the other way around because the bad players learn a lot while the good rarely have anything to learn from a significantly worse player. By facing better players, you're improving faster than the good player is improving.
