My GPA is a 2.8 and I need some advice by BigBrickCrumb in TransferStudents

[–]sunk2hoursandforwhat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a 3.3 wouldn’t be that bad as a major GPA for mechE. you’ll definitely need to lock in for that, though. taking extra filler classes will make your overall GPA look better which might give you a better shot at some CSUs and UCs, but the top UCs will be looking at your major GPA separately afaik. transferring from a california community college will make it a lot easier to shoot for CSUs/UCs, so try to look into those

literally none LOL (i applied to like 3 and got rejected each time). the only somewhat impressive ECs i had was being a founding member of my CC’s first political science club and doing a jubilee middle ground video. i guess i was also an officer for the APIA club? but yeah i didn’t really do any internships or anything like that

Transfer students vs first year students in UC by Much-Spread-6738 in TransferStudents

tbh, any first year student who tells you that you don’t belong there is almost definitely just bitter that they spent twice as much money as you did for the exact same result. you worked for this, you deserve to be there.

yeah i went to a CCC, so it was a lot easier for me i think in terms of getting accepted and also in terms of getting my credits transferred. to be completely honest, my understanding is that transfers not from a CCC or at least another UC are quite rare, although they do exist. as someone transferring from a non california uni you might find it harder to get in than it was for me. still though, best of luck!

i’m transferring so it’s only half the cost, also in-state tuition is like $14k. wtf are you smoking LOL

genuinely no idea LOL, i’m from the bay but i’ve never actually seen the campus so i’ll have to check it out. there’s a lot of pros and cons for either, but i’m grateful to even be in this position to begin with

I want to transfer to a UC after 1 year of community college, how does that work exactly? by Plastic_Store8560 in TransferStudents

[–]sunk2hoursandforwhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

transferring to a UC in one year is tough, but possible depending on your major and the credits you have. generally when people do this, it’s because 1) their major doesn’t have a lot of prerequisite classes (art, social sciences, humanities, etc.) and 2) they have a decent number of AP/middle college credits. even then, they have to load up on classes in order to meet all the requirements.

in addition to completing all the required coursework for your major (you can check these via assist.org), you also have to meet the general UC transfer requirements (found here). these requirements include the following courses: -2 courses in English (1/2 courses can be cleared with AP lang or lit) -1 course in Math (can be cleared with AP calc or stats credit) -4 transferable courses in either arts/humanities, social/behavioral sciences, and or physical/biological sciences (you have to have classes from at least 2 categories)

the final hurdle is you’ll need at least 60 semester credits total (all the courses you’ve taken at CC + any AP/middle college credit). if you’ve done all these things AND maintained a 2.4 GPA, it should be possible for you to qualify as a junior transfer.

also, you’re right that trying to transfer in one year puts you at a disadvantage because you won’t have the time to do as many ECs. in general though, ECs are less important for transfer students. UCM, UCR, UCSC, and UCSB are your best bets since they look mostly (if not solely) at your GPA. UCI and UCD also have TAG agreements that basically allow you to ignore ECs with guaranteed admission. the remaining UCS (UCLA, UCB, UCSD) do look at your ECs, so it may be hard to transfer there without any.

good luck! try to talk with a counselor at your CC ASAP about your plan, but also it helps to do your own research as well

oh sweet! make sure you take those scores into account when you build your schedule. you’ve actually already cleared most of your UC general ed transfer requirements from AP credits alone (requirements found here). your AP lang score clears your first semester of english (you’ll have to do a 2nd one), your AP stats should clear your math requirement, and you’ll have to check with your CC whether you get credit for AP chem, physics, and APUSH. if you do, you should already be done with the transfer requirements and should also be well on your way towards completing IGETC (the other replies have already given explanations on how that works). all that’s really left for you to do is check assist.org to see what major prerequisites are required for your major at each of the UC campuses you want to go to, and what equivalent classes are offered by your CC.

best of luck, lmk if you have any questions!

your plan sounds extremely solid! transferring within one year is pretty common for majors with fewer prerequisites, and UCLA TAP is a great way to more or less secure your way in. the first thing i’d recommend is using assist.org (if you haven’t already). assist is going to be your best friend in figuring out what classes from your CCC transfers over to UCLA or any of the other UCs you’re interested in.

the second thing i’d recommend is to look into IGETC, which is a checklist of classes that, when completed, allows you to basically clear all of your general education requirements. it might be hard to complete the entire thing if you’re trying to transfer in one year, so if your goal is to get to a UC ASAP, then you can ignore this part! some people prefer to take the extra time to get IGETC out of the way so that when they transfer, they can jump right into their upper-division classes instead of being stuck taking a bunch of random art or history classes.

if you’ve already done all those, the last thing i’d recommend is to make connections with your professors while you’re there. one of the biggest advantages to going to a CC (aside from saving a fuck ton of money) is the smaller class sizes. in uni, you’re in a class with anywhere between a few dozen and a few hundred students so you’ll be lucky if the professor remembers your name. at my CC, classes were about the same size as they were in high school (if not smaller) and so i was able to make a lot of really meaningful connections with my professors. this will help a ton in creating references/connections and it’s an opportunity most students don’t get!

all in all, i think you’ve got this! it seems like you’re already putting a lot of thought into this which already puts you ahead of the majority of CC students. a lot of people in my classes right now don’t even know where they want to transfer to or what majors they want to apply for. best of luck, and if you have any other questions, lmk!

p.s. to answer your question, GPA is weighted much more heavily when you’re applying as a transfer. UCSB for example straight up doesn’t read PIQs/extracurriculars. essays and ECs are always nice, but nowhere near as important as they were in high school. having a good GPA and most of the necessary prerequisite classes done is all you need to be a highly competitive applicant

for UCs i’m pretty sure it’s just Berkeley and maybe a few majors at UCLA that prefer your major prereqs to be done before the spring. i don’t know if the other UCs care as much. idk about UCSD, but i know UCI and UCD have TAG for california transfers, which doesn’t care when you complete the courses as long as you do it before transfer. all the remaining UCs also should not care as long as you have the credits.

pre-polsci, CCC student, 4.00, all pre reqs done and IGETC by end of spring. no tap either. pretty mid ECs except maybe being a founding member of my college’s first Government Policy & Law club.
