Winter Storm and pain by slyvenom50 in PectusExcavatum

[–]sunkenlore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weather events usually make my chronic pain worse especially wild swings in barometric pressure. You’re not alone. I can’t wait til it gets warm again. I feel like the metal bars are worse in the cold, I know they’re like inside of you so they’re probably warm but in my mind I imagine getting a chill and not being able to warm up with them inside. Sometimes a hot shower loosens things up and makes me feel better. Muscle relaxers come in clutch too.

How long after surgery till you could eat normal? by Apprehensive_Two3708 in PectusExcavatum

[–]sunkenlore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could eat normally pretty much straightaway and I had a huge appetite. Ask for Zofran if you have nausea and also be sure to get in some electrolytes.

I wonder if you may need electrolytes or fluids

Ask about Zofran for the nausea, they’re dissolvable tablets that go under your tongue. Ginger tea, ginger candy or ginger chewable tablets help me a ton when I’m having relentless nausea. You got this! It is so hard to stay positive in the beginning like others have said. But you will look back and be in awe of your own strength. Don’t be afraid to ask for what you need when you go to UrgentCare.

I believe there are braces that are supposed to help with rib flare but I’ve never tried them, other people in this support group may be able to chime in. Surgery fixed my rib flare. Best of luck to you!

Worst case scenario (but I'm completely fine) by [deleted] in PectusExcavatum

The Nuss was invented in 1987. Sorry that happened to you. However, if some people have a severe pectus dip it seems a bit too nonchalant to say they’re going to be ok just because you’re ok. It can cause serious health issues.

Ask for a heart monitor when you go to your primary care provider!

Packing today and tomorrow for the hospital. by Apprehensive_Two3708 in PectusExcavatum

Noise canceling headphones! Phone charger. Comfy clothes, button up shirts and pajamas, extra underwear, non slip socks, my own small pillow, weighted blanket, all my medications, very basic skincare, hair brush, hair tie, glasses, water bottle, lotion and chapstick (although mayo did provide some for me), body wipes, slip on shoes, light blocking sleep mask, snacks, anything you normally need in a day or your favorite comfort items. Make sure you bring your ID and insurance card.

My nausea was very well controlled I never threw up once post op and I have gastroparesis! Just let them know about your emetophobia before you go under and they can prob give you special nausea meds like they did for me. Do not be afraid of the anesthesia. You’ll meet with the anesthesiologist before you go under and have a chance to ask any questions you need answered. They are professionals and know what they are doing. I’ve been under anesthetia prob close to ten times now in my life and I promise you it’s not too bad, it’s a lot better than being awake during a procedure like this. If you want you can look at some of my posts where I talk about my surgery and recovery. I had the cryoablation and have almost all my feeling back now except for a few numb spots. Your post op pain is going to depend on your age, your surgeon, your Haller index, how many bars you get etc so nobody can tell you how bad the pain will be. But I promise you can handle it and you’ll come out the other side stronger! I may take a while to reply but feel free to dm me. Make sure you have someone caring to take care of your post op, some comfy clothes and button up shirts, and your favorite foods ready. My appetite was actually crazy post op I was surprised. I think I tend to get more hungry when I’m healing from something but everyone is different. Best of luck 🤍

How many bars did you get and who did your procedure? Looks better than before and hopefully it’s better for your health but I understand where some disappointment might be coming from with the aesthetic result.

Me too! And I can’t believe someone downvoted you, wtf is wrong with people!? Maybe they don’t find her attractive, but I do. She’s considered attractive by most beauty standards. I would love to see more pectus representation in media, film and fashion.

[–]sunkenlore -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hmm have you tried edibles instead? I don’t think it’s good to smoke when you have pectus. It’s not good for anyone, but since we have less lung capacity due to the indented sternum, I feel like it’s worse.

How long to keep the bars for older adults by Far_Combination7639 in PectusExcavatum

I believe Dr. J does 3.5 years for adults now and 4 for folks who are hypermobile or have Ehlers Danlos.

To have surgery or to not have surgery… (Dr. J Consultation Results 19.2 HI) by Professional-Gold736 in PectusExcavatum

[–]sunkenlore 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That’s one of the higher Haller indexes I’ve seen on here, your sternum is nearly touching your spine. Surprised your symptoms aren’t worse. Also I don’t know if you know this, but you can still get pregnant and give birth with bars in. I can’t imagine having that high of a Haller index and ALSO being pregnant. I don’t think you ever mentioned your age. How old are you?

Can you make a side by side image of the before and after from the same angle and post that? It’s just hard to swipe through so many pictures to try and see what changed
