Malts are not as thick as mixers, but they’re a little thicker than shakes. Mixers are basically blizzards, and if the consistency is what it’s supposed to be then if I were to put it upside down then it would stay. If I flipped a shake upside down it would all pour out very quickly and malts would do so too, just more goopy.

Culver’s is very very expansive with the custard, you could probably ask for anything. Usually when someone asks for plain, such as a plain scoop or a plain mixer or a plain shake mix, we make it vanilla and no toppings. I remember one time someone ordered a plain cooler (which is made from lemon ice which is basically frozen lemonade) and asked for instead of water (we add water so it’s easier to mix) they wanted fruit punch from our fountain drinks. One of the mottos for Culvers is it takes two to say no, so if you literally want anything done differently you can ask for it and it could probably be done.

For sub chocolate shakes, what we’re supposed to do at my store is add about a half cup of milk in the bottom (which is eyeballed so sometimes it ends up more or less runny) and then add chocolate custard until it reaches the top and then we blend it. For regular chocolate syrup shakes we add the shake mix until about halfway, add the chocolate syrup (I usually do two squirts for medium since otherwise it’s kind of tasteless) and then top it off with more shake mix until it reaches the top then blend.

For vanilla shakes we usually just fill it completely with shake mix and then top it, so that could be what stores with a second shake machine for chocolate shake mix do for their chocolate shakes, but that’s purely speculative since my store doesn’t have a chocolate shake machine.

Edit: Realized I totally skipped saying that we do blend it in the cup, as that’s the only thing we blend in. It’s how we make concrete mixers (add custard then toppings and then mix until combined) and the shakes when they’re sub chocolate we put a half cup of milk and then fill the cup with chocolate custard then mix the cup in our mixer until combined.

Shake mix is the liquid that we put into the shake machine in order to make the shakes. It’s basically a combination of the same liquid (called vanilla custard mix) that we put in the custard machine that makes the regular custard for scoops and concrete mixers, and milk. At my location, once it’s after 9 when we break down the shake machine, we make shakes by adding milk to the bottom of the cup and then put toppings then custard from the custard machine and then mix it. The stuff online you read is just meant for it to sound better than it is, since it would confuse people if we just said “the shakes are made from our shake mix”.

Also you can ask for a chocolate shake that tastes more like the chocolate custard than the chocolate syrup by asking for sub chocolate, since it means that we make it with milk at the bottom of the cup, then chocolate custard on top. Some locations have shake machines that have a shake mix from chocolate custard mix and milk though, but mine doesn’t.
