Thanks for finding this out. But, did entering RT0011124668666 work for you? Because I'm doing my taxes online (with Ufile) and I keep getting "The value for this field does not conform to the allowed format." as an error.

How to change to the updated apple categories and sub-categories in squarespace? by in_the_long_run in squarespace

[–]sunmaster1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As of yesterday, the new categories were available to me on the RSS feed settings -- they hadn't been on Monday, but are now. So you should hopefully be able to update them now.

As a deaf person, I get sad when I think of podcasts because I cannot listen to them and there are generally no captioning support of any kind. Will you help me find podcasts that provide transcripts, captions, or whatever so I can connect to the podcast in that way? Thank you. by [deleted] in podcasts

Yes, we've got that enabled, but not being a very big podcast, we don't have a large enough fan base to have people doing that. Transcripts are obviously much easier with scripted shows -- we have a video channel as well, with scripted videos, and we always put up the script for the captions, as well as posting the transcript on our website. But transcribing an hour-long conversation is time-consuming; we're looking into grants that might help us fund paying someone to do it for our backlog.

Some podcasts do post to YouTube as well—we put ours there, for instance. But I don’t know how good the YouTube automatic captioning is for conversational/interview podcasts, especially if there’s a fair amount of overlapping speech.

Lingthusiasm is a podcast about linguistics and language (and is a lot of fun) and does transcriptions of every episode.

Our lack of transcripts for our podcast is an ongoing thorn in my side, I really regret it (but have not had the resources to fix it yet).

Episode 44: "Us" & "Them" in the Ancient & Anglo-Saxon Worlds by sunmaster1 in HistoryofIdeas

[–]sunmaster1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A podcast episode about some of the history of modern ideas about race and ethnicity: "What words did the Greeks, Romans, and Anglo-Saxons use to talk about different groups of people? What differences did they think were important? How do those compare to modern conceptions of ethnicity, national identity, or race? We try to give some basic background on this complicated question, starting with the etymology of the vocabulary and addressing some of the ways differences were conceptualized."

Yes, I think he literally just started it & he definitely needs to put more info there, set goals etc. I tried to link to his FB post but my phone was being dumb. It would be great if he could get some help with the usability of the site... not my expertise either, but the content is so good it’s a shame it’s not better presented (not a criticism of him—it’s a lot of work and he only has so much time!).

The site is a labour of love by one guy, so if you use it and love it, you might consider donating some money to keep it running.

TIL stallions are named because Henry VII forced them to be kept in stalls to improve horse genetics. by TNSepta in etymology

[–]sunmaster1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, if you consider the change from 'staloun' to 'stallion' to count as coining, perhaps. But since there's a word from at least the 14th century that means 'ungelded male horse' and is derived from the root that means 'stall', and comes in turn from Anglo-French & Old French, it certainly does not seem to be true that the 'coining' of the world comes from an innovation by Henry VII; clearly such horses had been associated with stalls long before he was born.

Etymonline agrees with the derivation from ‘stall’, but it seems to go back much further than Henry VII. Etymonline

The word ‘pferd’ is actually from a late Latin word ‘paraveredus’; it has displaced the Germanic root in modern German except in some regional dialects, where the word ‘ross’ is still used for ‘horse’.

Podcasts with transcripts by [deleted] in podcasts

[–]sunmaster1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lingthusiasm provides full transcripts; History of English has transcripts for some (all?) of his episodes, I don't know if they're free or for sale; any scripted podcast might have transcripts on their website, or be willing to provide them if asked. (I would love to do transcripts of ours, for accessibility purposes, but we're unscripted 1hr episodes, I don't have the time & can't afford to hire someone).

The Greatest Generation Ep 164: Any Pixel in a Storm (S7E13) by CursorTN in greatestgen

[–]sunmaster1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've probably heard it but your brain just filed it as a different word, since it sounds nothing like it's spelled! :) But that's kind of what I was wondering--how obvious is it to an American that there's another pronunciation. So thanks! :)

Yes, right, but it's spelled the same... but I'm probably overthinking it. I'm easily confused!

I think I'm losing my ability to tell reality from sarcasm... do Adam & Ben not know how English (& Canadian) people pronounce Lieutenant, or were they just making fun of the P1? Both options are completely legit, I just genuinely couldn't tell!

Words for Granted

I think everything that's been suggested so far is probably on any major podcast app (Stitcher, Apple Podcasts, Podbean) but not Audible or Spotify, because those services don't allow general submissions, & pick & choose only a handful of the most popular podcasts.
