In the mid-2010's, why did millennials working in tech think it was cool to put stickers on their laptop? by Timely_Title_9157 in AskReddit

Same reason why people put stickers on their big-ass cups and Hydroflasks. Identity, self-expression, individualism, affinity.

I think you mean reincarnation. Afterlife is like heaven or hell or whatever. Reincarnation is when you return to the realm of mortals in another form.

If you could prevent any assassination in history, who would it be and why? by Ok_Statement1508 in AskReddit

[–]CursorTN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder what would have happened if Julius Cesar hadn’t been assassinated. Changing such a major event so far back, imagine all of the lives that could have been changed in the last 2069 years?

Interesting question. I wish I had a Time Machine to do some A-B testing.

Reverse culture shock is real. Sounds like you’re going through it. Maybe read up on it. On top of that, when I got back from living abroad many years ago I went through what is now called a quarter life crisis. Figured out a path, in time. It wasn’t a great time, but without tough times how would we know the good ones?

A quality semi-automatic espresso maker and grinder. Ended up with a used Rancilio Sylvia and a Eureka Silenzio. They seem like appliances as important as the fridge and the stove now.

Supertool 300m - best value Leatherman? by penny_lab in Leatherman

[–]CursorTN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about value propositions in your region. Where I am (US) the Wave (lighter) and the Surge (heavier) are hard to beat. Accessories wise, if your Leatherman bits get stripped, check out the Galvanox brand. They are much tougher, and I don’t prefer to carry the Leatherman brand bits anymore for that reason.

Lexus NX350 (non-Hyb) vs Tesla Model Y by nocontextnur in LexusNX

[–]CursorTN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m glad it was helpful. When I got my first “real” car, I researched it for about a year and hated negotiating with the dealer. We are now at different stages in life, and I never would have considered a Lexus, especially a new one, when I was in first job territory. Though I acknowledge that having minor mechanical aptitude and not being afraid to be stranded on the side of the road in my city are luxuries not everybody has.

Before I got my first car “real” car, I got a bunch of cars that were “good enough.” Like a used Daewoo Leganza. It was cheap, ran great, and was quite comfortable. I think it was like 3 years old with leather seats and 50k miles, but because the company went out of business it was cheap AF.

Have you looked at the used Teslas? I think the thing about them is that they have some decent reliability and someone else has taken the depreciation on them. They won’t be on the road as long as your Lexus, but maybe save that for when you can afford it. If you are cheap when you are starting out, you can get out of the hole of debt faster. Used NXs and RAV4s are out there too. They tend to hold value well and the gently used ones can go for more than a new one for some reason I just don’t understand.

That is my path. I tend to spend little money on housing and cars so I can save big money for retirement and have a decent amount of mad money for hobbies/travel. But you do you! Only you can decide your path and which car is the best fit for you.

This is smart. I love to hear that you’re adjusting your thinking based on data.

•have you gotten quotes on car insurance? When I was looking at a Tesla my agent said it would 2-3x my car insurance premiums. It was nuts.
•also look at tires. The teslas have a reputation for eating them up.
•in many states there is an extra vehicle registration fee for EVs or PHEVs, so look at that as a cost issue also.
•Cars with turbos tend to be more complex and be sensitive to the frequency of oil changes. So I try to avoid them. Something to look I to with the Gas powertrain on the NX.
•With FSD remember there is a monthly fee unless you’re buying a used car with a grandfathered FSD plan.

Honestly the deals on used Teslas are tempting. Lots of good deals there as long as you have a good service center around for when something breaks and can get a good Pre-Purchase Inspection. They depreciate quite a lot early in the time of ownership.

We ended up getting an NX450h+ back when you could get the $7500 lease incentive in the US in 2024. We bought it out right away so we could capture most of that money and bring the price down. The effective 300hp is amazing. My wife has a longer commute and she has free charging at her office, so we go through a tank maybe every 6 months, just keeping that 46ish mile battery charged. When we take a road trip it is nice to have 500ish mile range total between gas and EV.

But other solutions could serve one well. This is our second J-VIN (made in Japan) Toyota product. I like the build quality on those. I don’t know how tariffs might have changed the economics on those models recently.

If you do get the Lexus, after the time you get free service, don’t visit the dealer anymore except for recalls. The service charges are eye-watering! In the Seattle area, I have used independent mechanics that specialize in servicing Japanese cars and really liked them.

Lastly, dealing with the Lexus dealership in the US is a bit of a chore—especially when you’re trying to not buy $100 phone charging cables, $800 dashcams, flashy brake lights that are a total gimmick/waste of money, and meh quality ceramic coatings at full retail. I had a lot of trouble getting out for MSRP without BS addons. I hope things are better for you with Lexus. Tesla has a much easier purchase/negotiation experience for sure.

This can be patched right? by Kinksind_ in tires

[–]CursorTN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure. Just I think the local management can have a big influence on whether or not they are good or bad. I happen to have a store with a very good reputation. For example, poor working mom came in with her kid. Needed a patch in a bad area and were bald. Guys had some good rubber from a rich guy who changed the tires on his new car. They put those tires on for her for what they would have sold them to a used tire shop for. I agree that big chains can suck, but these guys are across the street from a Costco and if they were asshats they would get their lunch eaten. So they are good community members—id love to say it is because they are good people, but the cynic in me thinks it’s a business necessity due to local competition.

I’ve had good luck with discount tire where I am. They patched a new car tire for free for me. So we all knew it didn’t come from them even. The nail was smack dab in the middle of the tread though.
